I had a 98 Cobra back in the day. Mine had the 1.5L non intercooled Kenne Bell blower and IMRC deletes when I bought. I modded my manifold for short runners and raised the manifold floor like "they" said to do. Admittedly, I did a bit nicer job than shown here, but I could still feel a significant torque loss - with no commensurate gain up top to show for it. Luckily, I had 4.10 gears which kinda made it a moot point on street tires. I used to bleed ford blue back in the day. Now I'm with Richard - I just like good running engines, whatever the source...

Uhh theres endless aftermarket support for the ford modular engines.... pretty much anything mustang has the largest aftermarket support.
@andyharman30224 жыл бұрын
@@DrGibs347 Only because for 25 years, the Modular was Ford's only production V8. Ford really missed the direction of the market when they designed the Mod engine. The wanted it to be small enough to fit in front wheel drive cars, so they designed it with 100 mm bore spacing, pretty much limiting it to 93mm bore. Meanwhile, GM and Chrysler have the LS and Hemi that can go to 104mm bore. The Ford just can't compete with the 2-valve version, so a 4-valve dohc engine is necessary. Expensive to manufacture. Expensive to modify.
@madmod4 жыл бұрын
@@andyharman3022 The bore was selected to make the engine square and keep displacement down. It makes for a more efficient combo overall being less prone to detonation with the small bore and good stock heads. The long stroke helps with cylinder filling especially with the 2vs which focus more on port velocity than flow, hence why even the earliest 2v out torques a lot of pushrod engines. Richards own test saw 260hp- 341ft/lbs run with the stock npi cam and intake vs 250hp-300ft/lbs out of the 5.0 combo. It's obvious the modular is effective at power production despite being quite small in displacement. You can't argue it missed the market when the 2v outsold the other pony cars and still competed with the 70ci larger, and more powerful combos where the 4v was much more suited. I'm tired of the claims of how spendy they are because I have been able to source running 4v c headed combos for under 300$ for years. These stock heads and cams will support almost any power level you'd like to reach on a 281.
@andyharman30224 жыл бұрын
@@madmod How much does a set of cams for a 4v Mod cost versus one cam for an LS or Hemi? That was my point, and don't try to tell me there is no difference in cost. As for all of your other statements about the Mod, it's just cheap rationalization from a Ford fanboy. "Long stroke improves cylinder filling." That's a laugh. The 2v mod outsold the GM F-body because it went out of production in 2002 for eight years. I ran my Camaro in about 100 track days from 2002 to 2016, and was never passed by a Mustang. From my point of view, the 4.6 was no match for the GM 5.7.

The 4V gurus have perfected the Short Runner Intake. It's best to only cut a couple inches off the runner length. Also keeping the bellmouth ends is beneficial. Lastly, raising the floor of the manifold the same amount that you take away from the runners will help keep the torque from dropping off. Unfortunately, the B Heads have limited support for aftermarket intakes.
@GroovesAndLands4 жыл бұрын
Not saying another short runner manifold wouldn't maybe do a little better, but this is basic helmholtz tuning stuff we've seen over and over and over again. Typically these engines can live long lives with a safe tune at about 450-475whp. At least that's been the history with the potentially thousands of boosted ones running around. With a 15% loss, that 450whp would be about 530 crank hp (and would actually read even higher than this test because this has the electric water pump and appears to not use an alternator (not 100%, but that's what it looked like in the picture @4:30).

It is quite interesting to see 96-98 Cobra motors with Kenne Bell hp per psi : So as default 96-98NA makes 305hp and with Kenne Bell at 7psi makes about 410HP based on their website, so math says: (410HP - 305HP) = 105HP. Which we divide with psi, so we get 105HP/7psi = 15HP/psi. Now with Richard Test: Modified NA = 376HP KB 8.8 psi = 485hp KB 11.9 psi = 506hp (485hp - 376hp) = 109hp. == 109hp / 8.8psi = 12.3hp/psi (506hp - 376hp) = 130hp == 130hp / 11.9psi = 10.9hp/psi So HP/PSI ration goes down very rapidly more you increast boost.
@Milehighsnake982 жыл бұрын
For one, this was a KB non-intercooled setup. The more you compress air, the more heat is generated. So using non-intercooled, you will see a decrease in returns. If you use an intercooled setup like a centrifugal or turbo, it will be more consistent that for X amount of boost, you would add Y amount of hp.

I'd like to see a Lincoln mark viii engine basically it's the same block and heads but the internals aren't as strong but they handle 12to 15 pounds of boost. Cams are said to be the same but the intake and exhaust manifolds are more restrictive that would be a good starting point for a new test and then do cobra intake and headers then re degree the stock cam then splice part of this video in wear u added cams intake then blower
@kennethpowers89954 жыл бұрын
Most of the internals are the same as the Cobra with the exception of the crank; cast in the Lincoln and Forged in the Cobra. Pistons and rods are the same between early cobra and Lincoln. Block is the same, Tekskid aluminum block from good old Italy. Head castings are the same between early cobra and Lincoln except the cams are timed a little different; similar duration but Cobra gets more lift. Intake manifold on the Lincoln was tuned for low end and had IMRC to aid that low speed power. It was after all a nearly 2 ton Lincoln. Also there isn’t anything really a boost level the engine will handle. Like any engine it’s power that breaks parts, it doesn’t care at what boost level the power occurs. I can run 25 psi on a stock 2v if it’s through a small, less efficient turbo and only makes me 500Hp. At the same time I could grenade that exact motor at 10psi with a larger turbo that flows much more air. This is why it’s important to look at your compressor maps before picking out a turbo for your build.

I should add the Cobra intake had IMRC too as Richard said but it’s more of a CMCV system because it’s still a single runner intake. The early Lincoln had true IMRC which had a vacuum operated servo and a true 2 runner intake design. Cobra and later Lincoln 1 runner intake were electronic servo controlled.

Can you make another video on these B head 96-98 Cobras maximum effort on a NA setup? I own a 97 cobra fairly healthy with 170K miles all original powertrain with 4 bolt ons no headers making 283 stock tune. I own a built/cammed/fbo mach 1 with 4:10’s as well. But I realllllly want to put cams in my cobra so bad and keep it B head strictly. I love the originality of the B head and keeping it Gen 1. Plus the stock manifold is the best looking intake manifold ford has ever made. It’s a street car I deeply care about and want to keep it B head. I have a hard time finding solid cams for good power/torque in the curve. Just looking for something that gives me a noticeable punch and is fun on the street.

@@turbojetpowered8299 best thing to do for em is 456 gears. That really brings those cars to life and gives it aggressive gearing like the 11-17 coyote cars had which really helped them. 331 is like 410 355 is like 430 and 373 is like 456 if you compare an 11-17 coyote mt82 to the t45 back in those days. So obviously the coyote has much more aggressive gearing and that really helped those cars. A set of 456 gears with a sticky tire can take off more than a half second in the quarter mile on it's own on these cars that is huge. I'm talking about a car that already had sticky tires just going from 327 to 456 gears will drop over half a second off your et it may actually even help the car trap a higher mph too. Gears REALLY wake these cars up. I cant think of many cars where a gear swap is needed as badly as it is on 96-98 cobras lol. The mach 1 will also benefit from gearing but not to the extend the torque less b head cars do because the mach is stronger in the mid range and has more torque overall so a super steep gear isnt needed although they do run awesome with 430-456 gears. A gear swap on a 96 cobra will have it easily taking down stock lt1s even bolt on lt1s and it wont be far off stock ls1s. Dont underestimate what 456 gears do for these cars lol
@mountainofeverest38614 жыл бұрын
The Cobra wasn't the top dog/Mustang... the Saleen S351 was for that era. 495hp for the S351. Modular Motors were the wrong move... Altered valve angle was the way they should have gone.. NASCAR Fords had been at 18 degrees since the 80's.. 18 deg heads instead of OHV would have put Fords on equal footing to the LS series without boost or spending zillions for a cam upgrade.

@@turbojetpowered8299 I bet your mach was sick. I used to own a 97 cobra and 03 mach but it wasnt like whT yours was. It was fbo stock gears tune. It was faster than my intake full exhaust minus headers non tuned 97 cobra with 4.10 gears. The 4.10 really woke it up but afterwards wished I had went 456. I wanted 4.10 in the mach and cams similar to your build I bet that was badass man. Those cars are alot quicker than many realize they could keep up with the ls1 cars pretty good it was close enough to be a drivers race edge to the ls1. You're right in that ford would not offer 456 stock it's too good lol. There has to be compromise I could see 373 maybe 410 like you said. The coyotes got stock 373s and they had a much more aggressively geared trans.

Were the cams degree’d ? Or just swapped out? Good gains with cams!
@mrelectron62204 жыл бұрын
Moises L most people do not degree cams and leave free HP on the table I've read this more than once from professional engine builders of the 4.6 2V and 4V. If each cam is out even one or two degree you have an imbalance and one side of the motor is fighting the other side. This is especially important on multi cam engines more so the single cam push rod motors. The worst you wind up with on a push rod motor is a power band that has shifted either up or down the rpm range a bit.
