This video is about an ex-Nicola Larini Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI in Martini Alfa Corse colours and featuring the latest 1996 specs for the ITC (International Touring Car) Championship, which is how DTM was called for its last season with the very expensive 2.5-liter D1 / Class 1 touring cars.
The 155 DTM is so famous for its Alfa Romeo engine, called 'Busso', and which was used from 1993 until the first races of the 1996 season. It was a 60° deeply revised V6 (but still derived from the one mounted on the street-legal Alfas) which was able to produce up to 470hp at around 11,600 rpm in its final evolution. But for the second part of the 1996 season, in order to try to regain competitiveness and win the constructors championship, a new more powerful engine was introduced on the 155 'ITC' cars. It was a 90 degrees angle V6 not derived from the 'Busso' but from a V6 PRV (a jointly-developed engine by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo) that was used on the Lancia Thema V6.
The ITC's rules stated simply that cars must be powered by an engine that shared it's V-angle and bore spacing with a production engine (since the 90° aluminium block PRV mounted on the Thema had a displacement of 2.8-liter, the mandatory 2,500 cc was reached modifying the bore and stroke). It was possible to homologate it since in the 80's Alfa Romeo was joined to Lancia to form the Alfa-Lancia Industriale, making Alfa a manufacturer of Lancia cars for just a few years. FIAT opposed to the development and use of this engine for marketing reasons, so much that the building phases proceeded in secret form. Alfa had to develop two engines both to confuse the press and for homologations purposes such as V angle, distance between cylinders and other dimensions: one was based on the 90 degrees V8 from an Alfa Montreal and one concerning a V6 which had some similarities with the PRV unit of the old Thema. The new engine, called 690RC, was lighter and more powerful with a max output of around 490hp at 11,800 rpm and reach a max rev limit of 12,000 rpm.
With the 690RC, Alfa started to win and obtain good results again but that were not enough to finish the championship on the highest step of the podium. If that engine was introduced at the beginning of the season, probably Alfa Romeo could have easily won the 1996 title.

I worked in a Fiat Garage earlier . In 95`they came to the nürburgring and i bought a martini team flag . Weve been sitting in Mühlenbachschleife . I got goose bumps when they came down the hill after the start all together . This sound was amazing ...i remember since it was yesterday

Why do you want to see cars like this in DTM? DTM should be evolving and progresing in technology and racing car development. Just go to events like this one in the video and you will see cars like this all the time and you never know what a legendary driver you will meet. :)

@@JaredR1996 I am 24 too. I understand you on 150% very well what you are telling me, because i enjoy seeing and hearing these type of cars in real life events. Thats why i prefer to you something from my experiences. Which is: If you are from Europe, try to find a way to visit Hillclimb racing events in Austria, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland. Pick a country and go there, when you can. :) You will see cars from every type of racing categories, from almost every era in motorsport history, you will see some crazy drivers that will blow your mind away with their amazing driving skills. And its a for a whole weekend in the Mountains in a small village full with very passionate for motorsport people. :)

Hi Bozzy. As far as I am concerned, Italian is the most beautiful spoken language on the planet and this Alfa Romeo speaks it fluently. The sound is a lot harder than you think, I’ve heard this car a few time on Nurburgring classic dtm and its crazy, best dtm sound ive ever heard

It depends. Since you've mentioned 'Nürburgring' and 'classic DTM', I think you may have seen and heard this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5bHZHWAiZqVgdU In these years I had the pleasure to see 10 different 155 DTM/ITC cars in action and believe me, they aren't loud at all on the exhaust side (the sound comung from the intake is louder). In fact at 5:53 you can still hear that Delta at the end of the straight and people in the garage during the warm up can easily stay there without covering they're ears. But the one of the video that I linked, yes, that's really really loud. You need ear plugs if you want to attend the warm up procedure. There's another one here in Italy that sound as loud as that, and for what I understood in these years, the owner simply removed the (probably mandatory to race at that time) mufflers

Ok, thanks! I saw your footage from the Nürburgring and indeed it was much louder there. But I think with mufflers it sounds much better, since the exhaust doesn't drown out the rest. It's also how I remember them sounding from back in the day.

That Gutmann exhaust system is really gut Mann! Now seriously, this is the best recording of any Class 1 machine I ever came across. Absolutely fantastic! If only 19Bozzy92 was already recording when 30 of these things flew through the Hardtwald of Hockenheim in the 90s. :-D Wige Media back then often didn't even get the onboard sounds across, what a joke that was. Somebody now needs convince Volker Strycek and maybe Toto Wolff to bring the Calibra and the C-Class models of 1996 together with 19Bozzy92 exclusively for a recording session! Also as usual a very informative video description. I followed the series in every detail back then, but I think I never knew about FIAT not wanting the development of a new engine. I wonder if they were already thinking about quitting the class at that point or if the fact that a new engine was developed nevertheless caused some anger in FIAT's management fueling the decision to quit. Btw looks like the driver is using the automatic upshift here. The automatic functions of the gearbox caused some stir at Mercedes and Opel back then AFAIR. Did you talk to the people in charge of the car now about how high they rev it nowadays? Thanks very much for uploading!

First of all, thanks a lot for the very kind comment, man. Well, if there was a time machine, I'd definitely go back to the mid-80s and keep going until the late 90s to record what I consider the best motorsport period. But yeah, I/we have to be happy with these owners and events where you can still appreciate those beautiful machines. Thanks for reading the description too. If I understood correctly, the FIAT matter has come out in recent years with documentaries and interviews with old engineers and people who worked for Alfa Corse in those years. I put a video link in the description (this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZmzdoucopykZ68 ). It's an Italian interview done by the same guys who organized the track day where I recorded this 155 DTM. English substitles are really well done so if you are interested from 24:48 they started talking about their 1996 engine, with all the background. Regarding the automatic upshift, that's correct. I've never noticed it (and even know about it) until I saw this video a few years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJbWiKeomLunjNU (at 13 seconds). After that I always wanted to get some on board footage of a 1996 155 to spot it. But, no I haven't talk to them if not to ask permission to put the action camera and asking if they were using the exhaust with mufflers or not (obviously before they started it up for the warm ups)

Thanks for posting such a great film, what a stunning car! The engine though shares nothing with Busso's V6 masterpiece - it's entirely different and he had very little input in its design.

@@joe125ful The DeLorean used a lame version of the prv v6, but sharing the base engine block used for this crazy 12000 rpm engine.. Also Venturi used a 600 bhp twin turbo version for 24h of Le Mans Try read the wiki article on the v6 prv engine it's kind of crazy..

Il futuro nel motorsport è turbo hybrid, ma il fascino, il brivido e l'emozione che trasmette la melodia di questo motore aspirato non ha eguali. Le vecchie DTM poi D1 sono il massimo per riuscire ad apprezzare il suono di un motore aspirato sia avanti che dietro, più di qualsiasi formula o prototipo. S P E T T A C O L O!!! P.S. As a 80s kid i remember the old Alfas and think they were weird. but they are weird in a good way as i got older i appreciate them more for their genius design sound and sofistication you can tell they think their great and i like that attitude. about them the new Alfa quadrifoglio stelvio is nice.

So...after researching for a while it seems to me that in the first season Alfa raced on DTM they used an engine all theirs, but then had to change to the PRV one in the following years. Is that right or did I get it wrong?

Flappy paddle gearbox? I thought those Alfas DTM has those sequential gear shifters?

I'm pretty sure Alfa was the only one that went from H-pattern of 1993/1994 to the semi-automatic with paddle shifters from 1995. Mercedes had paddles shifters too in 1996 but a sequential gear shifter in previous years, such as Opel. If you want a further peculiarity, this 1996 155 have automatic upshift, like on the early 2000s F1 cars
