Coming out of high school in 97…I wanted one of these car.

I was a Junior in High School when these beauties were made. I remember seeing my friends dad dropping him off at school with his paper plate 96' green Impala. I can recall my jaw dropping and telling myself, "That's a sexy beast". After my friend telling his dad how much I love his ride, his dad being that cool dad picked us up after school one day and took us to Aloha Stadium so we could drive it in the parking lot. At that moment I knew I wanted one. His dad bought the car because the Police Department is given the option to use subsidized vehicles while on duty and for a particular reason Detectives drove green Impalas and the SWAT team drove black. Fast forward to the present with me now being in Law Enforcement I bought me a black "96 while my friends dad who is now retired and passed it on to him when he became an LEO now drives his father's Impala. Me and my friend work for different agencies and always pay our respect to those Cops that made the '96 Impala look absolutely badass. The only sad thing we can't use them for subsidized use.

Back in 1996 my dad purchased a brand new Dark Green 1996 Impala SS which he and my mom drove only to Las Vegas twice a year from Colorado, today it still sits in the garage all original with 30,000 miles .

I watched an interview John moss recently did about how these came to be after the SS moniker vanished for so long. It was developed in just 14 days for Seema. Moss convinced the brass he could sell 2000 units at the dealer exclusive meet. And if he could, it would be produced. They took 2800 orders the first day from the dealers. He wanted all black only but opened up to other colors. They also opened the vault to get the old logos etc for the car. All retuned suspension etc. And it started because a caprice owner was driving down the road and had modified his caprice and moss saw the car. Followed him home and had the idea for a hot rod version which became the SS. Super cool

That was and was not quite the last year. There is a 2006 to 2009 Impala SS. It sports an 5.3 LS4, and will sing a little different than other LS’s, and somehow sounds better in it’s own way. Can’t wait until mine is back from the shop.

The last year for the true Impala SS was 1996. The Impalas subsequently introduced in the 2000s were front-wheel drive imposters. The formula for a true Impala SS is as follows: a sporty yet elegant rear-wheel-drive four-door full-size sedan with sufficient output to put you back in your seat and sufficient cargo space to haul the family on trips. To call a front-wheel-drive sedan an Impala SS is akin to calling any front-wheel-drive vehicle a BMW. It’s no coincidence that BMW’s front-wheel-drive lineup, just recently introduced after a long history dedicated to front-wheel drive, happens to consist of its worst vehicles. The Chevrolet SS (2014-2017) was the last Chevy that could have truly qualified as an Impala SS, if only it were a full-size sedan. While we may never again see another true Impala SS coming off assembly lines, we have the distinct pleasure of enjoying that final generation from 1994 to 1996.

@@alekhidell7068 you don’t know about the V8 powered W Body vehicles. The Impala SS formula is, to stuff the largest possible engine, into the Impala, and then make sure that it is a tire smoking, speed machine. I believe that it is what an Impala SS is. Now, let’s line them up in stock form, and then who will get to the end of the 1/4 mile first. 0 to 60 to 0, you know whose going to be the victor. The W Body will out preform the B Body on everything except for doughnuts, and look(50%, I think the W Body is a little better because it’s more of a sleeper, but the B Body Impala is mean looking compared to the Caprice. They look more different, so I prefer the undercover looks.) I will give it to you that the 3.6 V6 will out preform the 5.3 LS4 V8 hands down, but not a SS, and not a V8. As for the Chevy SS. First, it is not a Impala. Second it is not a Chevrolet. Third it was never meant to be anything more than a temporary filler vehicle. Just like the Cobalt XFE, it was only used to fill in the gap between vehicles. Third, yes the FX3 suspension was the sport option, but it was the opposite of a cornering beast. Especially when the leather seats were included, you would not be enjoying any corner, nor would you follow through any, at any speed, but in a straight line, especially when you are cruising up the highway and rolling into the throttle. She will run, and she will sing. So both are straight line only. Drive one, and then you will get out of the test drive, smiling 😊. That is if you go into it understanding that it is not the fastest nor quickest. It is just a comfortable fun car to drive. The GPGXP is sportier, and just as fun to drive.

All of them. Just don’t lock your only key in one. They don’t make it easy to break into them. The other trims are better if you do.
