I've owned one, a 6.6 litre conversion. The steering is a "gearbox style" found on old trucks here in the USA, not a rack and pinion. They are notorious for getting gear mesh "play" as they age. 1,800 kg is correct. Single piston front calipers are a drawback. Rotors hold up well usually but slotted used to be a big improvement. Believe it or not there used to be a Porsche caliper conversion for the front. Opti-spark was the main drawback to this engine. The distributor ran off the camshaft in the front of the block but because it was directly behind the water pump it would get hot and misfire. MSD made aftermarket parts to help the problem. Police interceptor parts and SS parts are mostly the same except for coolant hoses. Spring upgrades were popular but more important was the swaybar and rear control arm upgrade. More or less it's like driving a living room wherever you go 🤣.

It's good to see that old V8 running about and stretching it's legs. You don't get those very often in other countries. They are typically domestic machines that never leave the continent. I had a 96 Impala SS back then and for another 230,000 miles. It was a beast. Crused the interstates at over 85mph and 25mpg. Strong acceleration, handeled pretty pretty well for well over 2 tons of Chevy. Shrugged off accidents, being blown off the road by tornadoes and a lot of miles in a lot of states. Talked to another owner who just had his rebuilt. His had been t-boned in a intersection by a small truck. Rolled the beast over several times. But it landed on its tires, all the doors opened, and his wife and two kids walked away. He figured he owed the car a full rebuild. Oh, all the Impala SS’ were based on the double strength police/taxi frame with the upgraded police suspension, and Corvette engine. Someone said they were a American idea for a BMW. Not build for autobahn speeds or handling. But if you have a 1,000-1,500 miles of windy road or interstate to get through in a day, and the day after, and maybe the next (which I used to have to so) and.. …turn heads …get waves from police thinking your a detective, or just fondly remembering the car. …carry a ridiculous amount of cargo, or very tall fiends in the back. And keep it up for a couple hundred thousand miles year round.

I have been waiting for this one. I have personal interest since I had a Caprice with the same 5.7 V8 engine, it was like driving your living room sofa and this Impala SS is a ”sportier” version of that, basically a cop car underneath. I’m a huge fan of these full size land yachts, there’s nothing like them anymore.

How good do you think a box caprice will do
@kobbetop3 ай бұрын
@@key2shawn154 a police version of the box caprice would do similar but as it’s less aerodynamic, well a lot less so this sleek bubble caprice/impala is better on track. But it’s basically the same car, only with a different body and different V8. The chassis is from 1977 on both.

Thank you for going through the effort of adding subtitles, Mischa. I’ve also been excited about seeing this lap for nearly a year. My SS was the first car I searched for, traveled cross country, and drove back. I had a lot of fun modifying it, racing SCCA, and winning a few car shows. Finally, I’ve been waiting for this video since you first showed the car. I had a 1994 SS BBB. Tell your freind to have bushing installed between the frame and chassis. None were put in at the factory. That’s why it feels like it’s flaoting. Car feels planted with them. And, it’s not a “Police Interceptor”. Chevrolet based the SS on the 9C1 police pack version. Translplanted a LT1 Corvette engine, blacked out the car and named it the Impala SS in honor of the first SS in 1964. I had my first +200 km run in mine.
@nikothevirgo2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. "Police Interceptor" is only a Ford thing ppl think it's just a term for any cop car. I gave him a pass because he's Russian lmao. And the first SS was a 61 impala SS. 61-69 then 94-96. And they did install body bushings just not as many as the 9C1. I've had both. His are probably worn

Man, thanks for taking that Big Bad Boat out on the Burg. You have to have mad skills to muscle it through the curves. Wanted to share the correct details about the 1994 - 1996 Impala SS with you all. It never was sold with the Corvette LT1. The Impala SS prototype created by Jon Moss for GM was a 9c1 (Caprice with the Police Package - HD suspension and cooling) with a T56 six speed paired with a Corvette LT1 with a monochrome black paint job and unique interior seen in your buddy's SS. A retuned LT1 5.7-liter (350 cu in) small-block V8 (OHV push rod) was standard on the Impala SS, making 260 horsepower (190 kW) and 330 pound-feet (450 N·m) of torque (retuned from the prototype's 300 horsepower (220 kW) rating). The primary difference between the LT1 in the Impala and the LT1 that was in the Corvette and Camaro was that the Impala engine was fitted with cast-iron cylinder heads instead of aluminum ones, and a camshaft that was designed more for low-end torque than high-end horsepower. Another difference was that the Impala LT1 had 2 bolt main bearing caps while the Corvette LT1 had 4 bolt main bearing caps. The LT1 has reverse cooling for a 10.5:1 compression ratio, uses 87 octane fuel, cam driven water pump and the a optical distributer mounted on the front of the engine driven directly from the cam. The impala SS came with 3:08 rear gears and a Auburn POSI differential. Dry weight is well over 4100+ pounds. 7+ second 0-60mph. 15.0+ ET and low 90 mph for the 1/4 mile. Now you know! Drive fast! Don't die!
@GregSr4 ай бұрын
I'm impressed. You perfectly detailed the Impala's LT1. I didn't see one error in your description. I've had my 96 Impala since late '95. I bought it new. I love the car but the steering is loose - even after replacing the gear box. It now has 320,000 miles. 2nd engine, 2nd transmission, 2nd rear end. BTW...my stock Impala turned the 1/4 in 15.3. After some minor mods to the intake and exhaust, it turned 14.7 @ 93 MPH.

Easily the most fun lap I've seen. I've still got one of these (my second) and they are reasonably sporty but do the long haul trips perfectly. This version has many of the modifications of the Chevy 9C1 (Special Service Package) which was a much loved police car. Police Interceptor refers to Ford Products....in either event...thank you for the great video.

Great video. I have owned the 96 Caprice version with the tow package and now own a DGGM 96 SS. Both cars had issues with steering input with very low kms. This car does not have a steering rack. The steering box can be adjusted by loosening the nut turning the hex screw in the center clockwise a little then tighten the nut until the over center free play is acceptable. This will reduce the steering input required and give better stability. This adjuster is located on top of the steering box. Easy fix, I hope your friend has it done, then do the ring again.

Regarding the steering you can improve it with a Jeep steering shaft from a late 80s-early 90s Cherokee. Polyurethane body mount bushings gives it a rougher but tighter feel when cornering. Lowering springs and beefier sway bars also improve the handling of this massive machine. I’m planning on adding a 12.0:1 steering box to mine in a few weeks. I’ll report back with results if you desire. Lastly, I’m upgrading from 17” wheels to 18” to get some better tire options. I heard that rubber screaming on the turns lol
