Does anyone else really miss "AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME?"

Yes! Louisville born and bred, I grew up with this and it gives me chills even now watching the old races and hearing that phrase. It’s just not the same now.

RIP Grindstone. 🏇 Exciting finish, though my favorite finish has to be from his grandson Mine That Bird

What a ride from Bailey ..... You don't ride a racehorse any better than that . Fantastic race , and great call as always from Dave Johnson .

Grindstone by a schnozz! What a great call by Davey Johnson too. Pure excitement! Can you imagine being the owner of either of those 2 horses, and you can't tell at the finish line if your horse won or lost? I'd have 3 heart attacks waiting for that photo!

That was probably one of the best races I have ever seen. When they did the replay, it really made me appreciate the skill of the jockey and the talent of the trainer. If I remember correctly, not only did Grindstone come from behind but he went from the back inside, worked his way through the crowd of bunched up horses comin around the turn so that he was actually on the outside before coming down the homestretch.

I remember I thought Baffert had his first derby here for sure. Gutty effort by Grindstone. I believe Unbridled Song was the favorite. He was too close to the early pace and then moved too early.
@chriscurtis83412 жыл бұрын
You don’t see it here, but Honour and Glory’s jockey, Aaron Gryder, went to the whip at the top of the stretch. When he hit the horse, he also hit Cavonnier’s nose. He shook his head quickly and went to the lead but that little hesitation cost him the race. Cavonnier, born and bred in my hometown of Forestville, CA, Pop 1776.

Everybody forgets about the horse that lost by a nostril to Grindstone: Cavonnier. Cavonnier was the great Bob Baffert's first Kentucky Derby horse. The next two years, Baffert was the trainer for Silver Charm and Real Quiet, who both almost won the Triple Crown. Bob Baffert is the best trainer in horseracing. Period. He really gives a damn about the horses, unlike trainers like D. Wayne Lukas.
@Terminator36_10th_Mtn_Div6 жыл бұрын
Now they both have 14 wins as trainers in Triple Crown races. Baffert has 1 Triple Crown (2015), and can get a 2nd Triple Crown in less than 3 weeks from now with his 15th win (2018 hopefully)). Pukas Lukas hasn't won a Triple Crown race in 5 years and no Triple Crowns. Baffert is the best of all time hands down.

If by "in the pool" you mean the number of horses in the Derby then yes that is also a large factor. Did you know that they have been talking about lowering the number of horses allowed in the Derby?
@TheFashionlover4ever12 жыл бұрын
Unfortunatly they've let the money aspect go a little too far. If they ignore the health for too long then they actually end up spending more money then they make. I think this is why we haven't had a Triple Crown winner in so long. You either end up with a horse that can go the Belmont distance but can't do the shorter races like the Derby or the Preakness or you get the reverse. A horse that has enough speed for the Derby and Preakness but not enough steam for the Belmont.
@lduranceau80462 жыл бұрын
It seems that most of the time, the winner of the Derby is a horse which is far behind at the 1/2 point. IE, the winner usually comes from way back.
