This season was also the debut of an NHL staple for years to come. The world famous and renowned "This season we will start to crack down on (insert penalty or flaw in the game here)" which last to about January/February, when they just kind of get tired of calling the penalties again. This season saw an up kick in scoring that hasn't been seen since, but could have been at around 1992/93 levels, had they actually stuck to their guns, which at the time was to crack down on obstruction/holding/hooking etc. Scoring was up in part due to the increase in power plays in the first half, and the presence of a historically bad team for teams to feast on when they played which was the senators (just like in 93). But alas, the league decided to stop calling penalties in the same fashion as they had earlier in the season, and obstruction in its various forms shot up and the amount of 50 goal scorers and 100 point men was still rather high, but not quite enough.

I'm from Quebec... i remember the first hockey match my father bring me to, a playoff game of the Nordique against the NYR. (The first game is always special and i remember how my father told me to love french speaking player but i was in love with Sakic and Kamensky ( don't ask me why i think it was only for the name ) And the next year happend and .... i was chearing for colorado, but i was sad to not be there... my father hated the avalange because of the Patrick Roy deal. Shannon, that's not true about Jim Carey being the first goaltender to being a Vezina winner or runner up in his first two seasons. There's at least the great Canadiens netminder Bill Durnan, who was a rookie during the 1943-1944 NHL season and won the Vezina, actually in his first 4 seasons, (he played 7 years and won the Vezina 6 times).

This was a really special time for me as a young Red Wings fan. I remember the song "I want Stanley" that came out that year in 1996: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWabl2ltqK15l8U Good lord was that a corny jingle! but it spoke to how hyped Detroit fans really were in the mid-late 90's for our hockey team. The 40+ year drought was soon to come to an end and we all truly believed that in our hearts. The Red Wings lifted the spirits of the whole city, and it was such a fun time to watch hockey and be a part of the huge spectacle that it was.

Sather had the Rangers budget when he took over as general manager!! But instead of rebuilding the roster with young players, he instead decided to spend like drunken sailor on ineffective veterans. What people tend to forget was that the Rangers was so putrid during the early parts of Sather's tenure that fans at the Garden was chanting "Fire Sather" over & over again. The only reason that the Rangers got themselves back on track had a lot to do with the salary cap that was implemented after the cancellation of the 2004-05 season, which forced Sather to focus more on development & less on spending.
