No need to disconnect the hoses, tear the shielding, or drain the coolant (I drained the coolant before I tackled the hoses based on other videos). The service manual and Haynes doesn't point to this repair, but the easiest I learned is loosening the top hoses then accessing the cooler while still attached. As long as both hoses are freed off the water pipes, the unit can be rotated 90º without twisting the hoses. But yeah, the hardest part is freeing up hoses from the pipe. Rocking the mate with [pliers/grips] back and forth until it freely moves is when you know you're good. The hose will slide off by hand if you want after that. Tricks of the trade.

OK boys and girls, I looked at several "oil cooler" videos and found none that addressed a leak at the attached water hoses. There may be a simpler way to go about replacing these 2 water hoses. I don't know how to create a video but I wanted to share how I did it. I pulled the exhaust manifold to access the clamps at upper ends of these 2 hoses. Therefore I needed 2 new gaskets. One between manifold and cylinder head MAHLE # MS16509 and another between manifold and catalytic converter ( This one is 5.65 O.D. ) MAHLE #F7454. Four local parts retailers were no help. RockAuto was my source for those along with a new oil filter ( pulled it to access one of the flange bolts between convertor and manifold ). RockAuto didn't seem clear in water hose descriptions so I journeyed to a local part store after all. I found a single hose with 2 90 degree bends to cut which perfectly produced the two hoses required. This is GATES # 18773. I slipped the OEM heat resistant sleeve material over these new hoses and I'm happy motoring again.

Did you have to drain the ALL the coolant?? and did you reuse it??did you drain the oil as well? Thanks very helpful video!

john maren i did try to drain most of the coolant;however, some did spill when I disconnected the hoses. So definitely be ready with rags. I didn’t reuse the coolant. I figured coolant is pretty cheap so I might as well change it. And yes, I drained the oil and went ahead and did an oil change. Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Those hoses are hard to get off cause they are old and hardened. This far in, you should just replace them.
