This entire episode should be enshrined in a museum somehow. Absolutely brilliant radio. Those were the days.

+Mike Colon One caveat I'd say is the Rangers weren't very fun after 97 when they began a nine year run of missing the playoffs but their Cup in 94 did set the tone for the great stuff in the other sports later in the decade. I have more Mike/Mad Dog material from the 96 WS to post later (including 40 minutes after Game 6 where Russo has to be humble in the face of Yankee triumph!)

I was 14 when they won in 96 ... What a time to be a kid and a Yankees fan. I just assumed they'd win forever, didn't realize how lucky we were! My first sports event was Game 6 Rangers vs Devils in the Meadowlands when Messier guaranteed victory and put up a hat. The Eastern Conference playoffs with Reggie and MJ vs the Knicks and their black sneakers. Then when I got my license at 17 it was Mike and Dog every afternoon. Magical time to be a kid in New York City!!

Great stuff man! Thanks a ton for posting these recordings. I wish The Fan would post up old recordings of the 94 rangers playoffs, but I doubt that would ever happen. There is nothing like this on the radio anymore - it all feels too fabricated, too forced, too PC.

You know what is embarrassing for us fans in this Jeffery interfered we know he was made a hero by people wrongly. Steve Bartman didn't interfere & his life was ruined. As Francesa said the media was 100% in the wrong making Jeffery a hero.

I said the same thing & shut up Francesca about the kid being 12. He knows or should know the difference between right & wrong. This kid at the time they made a hero & where the media made poor Steve Bartman a villain. Heres what the world knows Jeffery Mayer clearly interfered & Bartman it’s hard to tell.

Not a Yankee fan or a Baltimore fan but this is why I hate electronic umpiring, officiating, etc, in all sports. It's entertainment. The human element creates controversy, discussion and epic moments like this but most sports "fans" are too stupid and shortsighted to realize that.

In Game 3, the Orioles were four outs away from going up two games to one and with the worst Yankee pitcher in Kenny Rogers looming the next day. The turning point was in that game, not Game 1 with Maier and the culprit was Todd Zeile with his pump fake that got away that allowed the go-ahead run to score.
@tyroneweekes19833 жыл бұрын
But if the maier thing doesn’t happen they would’ve been four outs from going up 3-0 so the maier play was bigger 2-1 and 3-0 is a big difference
@epaddon3 жыл бұрын
@@tyroneweekes1983 You can not assume an automatic Game 2 win if you win Game 1 in nine innings. I'd point out that one reason the Orioles won Game 2 was because Mariano Rivera couldn't pitch in Game 2 after being used in Game 1 longer than usual but if we lose Game 1, then Rivera is available in Game 2. You can't assume automatically the course of Game 3 falls the same way. Bottom line is that this game did not decide the totality of the series and if you're saying it did, then you're admitting the Orioles weren't a team capable of resiliency.
@Minidunkathon932 жыл бұрын
@@epaddon No point in arguing this though. Who knows what happens the rest of the series if the Orioles win game 1, so many different variables. For that reason some people are always going to think the series was tainted. You repeating “you can not assume” in your comment proves this. The only thing we do know is that winning game 1 definitely would have given the Orioles a better chance of winning the series.
@iamhungey12345 Жыл бұрын
@@Minidunkathon93 Except after getting swept in their own home turf and lose the series in 5 games, it'd be a stretch to claim the Orioles could have won the series. Him repeating "You can not assume..." doesn't change the point being made there.

@@patrickgray5633 He did more than get away with it. New York treated him like royalty and gave him and his family great seats to World Series games and even offered to put him on a baseball card. Steve Bartman was the innocent one. He reached for a ball that was in the stands and had his life ruined and vilified until 2016. Received death threats from Cubs fans. Friendly Confines my ass. He also turned down numerous offers to profit from the experience. Make no mistake, the Cubs organization itself was great to him. Even gave him a WS ring and invited him back to the ballpark. But Maier helped his team so that makes it okay! Also, watching the replay again that was a good two feet over the railing.
