You're videos are perfection! I've a 98 crv, 235,000 and "we've" adjusted the valves together and replaced the oil pan gasket. If you ever have to do the wheel cylinders, bet your video would beat what's out there! I am a 52 year old woman, and your help has been invaluable to me. My Honda runs great!

I sinned and used the soft gasket, started dripping at 20 miles even when properly torqued, listen to this man and get the rigid one. It was a fun day because one of my captive studs on the header joint broke free and I had to get my sawzall in there to cut the stud, luckily the other 2 came free so the blade could barely fit. It's funny because the oem gasket I replaced wasn't even leaking at 219k! It was rock hard and took a half hour to carve off the pan. I was doing preventative maintenance. edit: for anyone watching in the future, you can't remove the header as one piece with the oil pan installed, and you can't remove the oil pan with the header installed 😣 this only matters if your lower header pipe won't separate from the upper half.

This video helped me a ton but I want to add something: inspect your bolts and studs and consider replacing. I reused the old ones, which I realized afterwards were very weakened. Two bolts sheared off while threading them in, and three nuts threaded onto the studs but would neither tighten or loosen (stripped threads I guess) and I had to dremel them off and twist out the studs with vise grips. I just replaced the studs with bolts, I don’t see a good reason not to unless anybody knows one
@hondaresource
@hondaresource 3 жыл бұрын
The studs are actually better than the bolts, but bolts are better than nothing. Those shouldn't ever be tightened enough to break or weaken them so they have been over tightened at some point.

@@hondaresource I didn’t have quick access to studs but they had bolts that would fit down at Advance. I figured I’d just keep a close eye on it and if there was an issue I’d order a stud kit but if it’s not leaking no reason to mess with it

@@hondaresource I have this exact same issue going on. On the transmission side I have a leak. I checked the bolts and nuts and one of the nuts is spinning. It's in a spot that I can't get a dremel in to cut it off. Any ideas on how to extract it? I'm guessing my leak is only because this one post/nut doesn't have any pressure on the seal.

How about cleaning the surfaces of the engine and the pan? Surely you must do that? How do you recommend to go about it? I expect a hard plastic scraper that won’t gouge and maybe some brake cleaner or similar or some kind or sludge remover. What can you inspect in the oil pickup? Anything?
@hondaresource
@hondaresource 3 жыл бұрын
I use brake cleaner and a clean rag or paper towel to clean the oil off of the surfaces. As far as the pickup, just look through the gap on the bottom of it and make sure the screen doesn't have anything stuck to it. Thank you for the great video. I am just wondering how you would diagnose a rear main seal leak versus a leaky oil pan? I replaced the oil pan gasket a few months back and it didn't seem to make an ounce of difference. I just realized after watching the video that I used the crappy rubber gasket instead of the rigid one. I'm going to buy the gasket you used to see if it makes a difference; but, I'm really thinking it is the rear main seal on the auto trans. How could I know for sure? Thanks again for the great videos :)
@hondaresource
@hondaresource 3 жыл бұрын
I would start by replacing the oil pan gasket and make sure you got the original metal rings off around the studs on that end of the oil pan. Also while you are there, take a flashlight and look up in between the engine and trans to see if you can see any dampness.

Are the hardware pieces for the oil pan supposed to be studs and nuts, bolts or both? If I can recall I took off both types. Also as I was taking the nuts off some of the studs, the entire stud would come out too. The nuts must’ve been stuck on it due to corrosion. I’d like to use new hardware. After I took all 19 pieces off I forgot where each one goes. Is there different hardware lengths that are supposed to be in specific spots? I wish there was a diagram….
