Man, this game and the Michigan-Ohio St. game in '97 really brought back emotional memories for me as a Jr in high school at the time. Seldom have I been happier with the outcome of 2 football games, in this case in one day! I watched the UM game that day as they were in contention for the Rose Bowl/National Championship while UF had been sluggish coming into this game. My friend told me the result of the UF-FSU game later over the phone and we were screaming at each other joyously over the receivers! Michigan helped Florida the year before knocking out OhioSt., Florida returned them the favor one year later in this game ;)

Florida State played in the national championship game in 1996, ‘98, ‘99, and 2000. Losing this game to Florida was the only thing that prevented FSU from playing for the national title 5 years in a row. They did lose 3 of the 4 championship games they played in. They were heavily favored in 2 of those losses and had just beaten Florida in the ‘96 regular season finale before getting blown out by the Gators in the Sugar Bowl for the national title.
@sjenkins84683 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it shows how easy it is to beat up on the All-Cupcake Conference pussies, be rested and healthy for Florida, then get your ass beat by real competition in the post-season. Good thing Bobby opted out of joining the SEC. FSU would’ve been the next Vandy.

It's a tie between Steve Spurrier and Billy Donovan is the greatest coaches in Gators History. I know Urban Meyer did a great job at Florida. But Spurrier put UF Football on the map. and Donovan made UF Basketball one of the best Basketball programs in the country. Turning a Football School into a Basketball School is well was a great job by Donovan. ps lets hope the Florida gets back on track to compete with Florida State. same with Miami. when all 3 teams are doing well it makes College Football much better. the same for other great programs like Southern California and Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Penn State, Tennessee and Michigan.

Steve Spurrier is still the greatest coach in Gators history, even though Urban Meyer won two National Titles, when you look at consistency, winning, and doing it the right way, Spurrier was the best football coach The Gators had. Really, I would say Meyer had one National Championship at Florida. Reason being is the 2006 team that won the National Championship against Ohio State, the bulk of those players were recruited by Meyer's predecessor, Ron Zook. Zook may not have been the best X'S and O's coach, but he deserves a lot of the credit for the 2006 National Championship Team.

From a Nole fan. Spurrier was the real deal when it came to coaching. He lacked a few manners here ad there but if Coach Bowden beat him we Noles knew we were beating the best. The won loss record between Coach Spurrier and Coach Bowden came out about even when they laid things down. I think Spurrier came out one game ahead of Coach Bowden. A good rivalry. Too bad the Gators dropped Miami from their schedule. The 3 big teams in Fla should always play each other each year.

You don't need to ask ESPN, just ask Bobby Bowden, he's quite honest about how he was too scared to join the SEC and have to face an SEC schedule. +getyoasshome had it been in the post Bowl Alliance era of college football you'd be right, but it wasn't. That was during a time in which, no matter what, the winner of the Pac 10 and Big 10 played in the Rose Bowl. So there was no way at all that FSU was going to be able to play Arizona State. And I disagree that FSU deserved a share. They beat UF at home, but the Gators had a top 5 strength of schedule and won the rematch by 32 points. FSU (like most years) played maybe 2 or 3 ranked teams in their regular season. The Gators had by far the best resume' of all the 1 loss teams in 1996 - and by the end of the bowl season, there were no more undefeated teams.

it was just unreal that an opponent like this could be considered an underdog against Florida State

Sometimes I wish Spurrier was still here but Muschamp has been lights out so far. I just hope Steve retires soon so he can come back to Florida and root for the Gators, where he belongs to be.

Successful year: 1993. FSU was #1 in Total Offense, and #1 in Total Defense. They averaged 42 points a game. They beat UF and Miami - who were both top ranked opponents. They then defeated undefeated Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. I'd say that's successful.

Not sure that a lot of people realized but 1997 UF beat FSU twice and they were ranked #1 both times that year. Jan 6, 1997 in the Sugar Bowl for the 1996 Natty and this game on Nov 22 1997. Go Gators! 🐊
