Excellent video. I used your suggestions and diagnosed my 1997 GMC K1500. I will update after I replace my fuel pump! Thanks. Update: I successfully replaced the fuel pump assembly! The hardest part was reinstalling the fuel lines at the tank. Not much room to maneuver! I only have 50 psi fuel pressure running and 60 on initial prime, but it runs well. 26 years old and 276000 miles (about 125000 since I overhauled the engine.) Thanks for the video!

Thanks big brother. I pinched my return line and it went to 85 psi. Ur the friggin man

So you replaced the regulator then
@DocZoidberg5492 ай бұрын
Mine does 55 psi with key on, 45 psi running. It doesn't leak down. Very hard start, but does run when warm. Resently replaced the pressure regulator with a ACdelco. Replacing the fuel pump this weekend.

Wow. You seem like a very good mechanic. I like how you go the extra mile and do the little things like fixing other little things around the problem area. If I lived close to you I'd definitely wanna pay you for work that I dont wanna do🤣 i also need to do the fuel pump on my 98

Good video. Just wanted to add to your brake bleeding method. Once I break lose the bleeder fitting with a socket I attach a hose and have a drained to an empty plastic water bottle and used a small open wrench to open and close the bleeder. Doing this I can keep the brake fluid from going all over the truck and floor. I can also see the air bubbles in the bottle if there are any very easy. Thanks for your video.

I changed the fuel pump on my 1996 in about 2 hours by dropping the tank. It should only take about an hour on a lift.

Thanks for the info I wish you would have showed the tank removal I need to replace my pump because of a nasty neighbor sugared my tank and now I'm having issues now and then that are fuel related it acts like it's running out of gas every few weeks then it runs fine for a while. I don't have any of the rust issues that truck is having thank God. My truck is an 98 Sierra 305. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida

Thanks for watching my video. Tank removal is not that bad and I'm sure there are videos on here showing the process. Run it til it's as low as possible to reduce the weight of tge tank. There are 4 nuts on the outside of tge frame that holds the front bracket to tge frame. Leave it attached to the fuel tank. Support the tank and remove the rear strap. There is one bolt holding the ground wire on top of the frame that must be removed. Loosen the filler pipe hoses and free up. Move the tank in towards the driveshaft and lower. Reach up beside the frame and disconnect the three fuel line fittings. I use a transmission jack to lower the tank as I'm disconnecting the lines. Good luck

I've replaced the fuel pump, filter, plugs, wires, still will run a day then no crank the next. Cleaned tank out and all. No leaks I can find
@PhillipBailey Жыл бұрын
No Crank and crank no start are different problems, which is it. If its a crank no start then you need to check fuel pressure, spark at the plugs and data while cranking.

On the propane trick: could you run the engine on propane long enough to pull it into my garage from the driveway? I am having my truck towed to my house to replace the fuel pump.

Yes, I've driven a vehicle several yards running on propane.

I got a 02 gmc 4.8 with a crank no start when cold. No fuel pressure with key but if a jump it it has 58 psi. Think if I do the pinch off on return line might tell me something
@PhillipBailey9 ай бұрын
Does the MIL turn on with the key? Does it commicate with a scan tool? Will it runic there is fuel pressure?

Would a 98 vortec gmc cutaway van have similar problems my van won't start when cold in will start if I plug it in I Replaced the fuel pump 4 months ago
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
Yes same system. Confirm you have fuel pressure as soon at you turn on the key. If not it's likely a failing fuel pump. If yes try flushing the injectors. They have a tendency of sticking when cold. You may have to replace the fuel injectors as a set if that does not work. Also Confirm coolant temp reading on the scan tool is correct for the actual temp.

I'm a mechanical dufus, so slow, and need reassurance. I have same model, won't start, but will start if I use starting fluid and runs fine once started. So if I do the crimp test, should engine start if I just crank? and if not, does it imply a bad fuel pump? What if I use starting fluid and it starts while return line crimped off? What would that mean? The truck sat for 7 or 8 years, I did replace the fuel pump but bought off internet. It ran well but then one day would not start when cranked, until I used starting fluid. Can you help me out here, somebody, with some clarification? If i crimp off return fuel line, but it starts using starting fluid, and runs ok, what should I conclude -- that its the fuel pump or the fuel regulator?
@PhillipBailey Жыл бұрын
It is likely the fuel pump is weak. The system needs to have 55psi to start but will run with as little as 45 once running. Put a pressure gage on the fuel rail. KOEO should be minimum 55psi. If low pinch off return hose. Should hit 75psi. If still low replace the pump. If high with line pinced replace the regulator inside the intake manifold.
@rockyfjord5338 Жыл бұрын
@@PhillipBailey Thank you very much. I crimped return fuel line, and truck would still not start, so assuming that means it's the fuel pump. It was replaced some months ago but with a pump bought off internet and then sat for some years till I got to it. I don't have pressure gage, but most likely the fuel pump rather than the regulator, or so I think.
@PhillipBailey Жыл бұрын
@@rockyfjord5338 probably right in you're assumption. During cranking the fuel injectors are spraying into nearly atmospheric pressure but once it starts there would be a vacuum in the manifold making it easier for the injectors to deliver fuel.

I found it so much easier to remove the bed.
@PhillipBailey Жыл бұрын
Yes ive done that but it requires several people to lift the box, those box bolts would not likely come out and fixing the lines along the frame is easier with the tank removed.
