This has to be one of the best if not THE best videos on how to troubleshoot fuel systems. Only someone who is selfless takes this much time and puts this much detail into their videos! You just earned a subscriber. I can’t thank you enough. My son and I are troubleshooting our 98 K1500 no start after rebuilding the top half of the engine. Again, THANK YOU!!!

EXCELLENT..I love your style, casual, informative and proper technique without all the tech toys. I've seen volumes of car repair videos but this is one of the first ones I have actually watched intently from start to finish fully satisfied. What makes your teaching style a perfect fit is that you troubleshoot with the same resources that I have-a digital multimeter. a test light and your trouble-shooting flow process which gets us down to the actual problem & solution. Beats running back & forth from the auto parts store just buying parts. Lastly you reflect on repair as a whole and consider what collateral concerns should be addressed with the repair. I think its awesome how you tied the Fuel Pump Relay to the Oil Pressure Switch and referenced all to the schematics, Thank you

Thanks for taking a big problem (3500lbs of truck that don't start/move) and turning into a small problem...By using LOGIC and very simple tools to say the least..I call schematics "road maps" you need them to figure out where you are and how and how to get un-lost..simple! Thank you job well done!

Thanks for the tips. Neighbor has a 92 Silverado that would stall like every 5 minutes. First the pick up coil in the distributor was replaced and truck ran fine for months. Same symptoms again, replace same pick up coil, still shutting down about every 5 minutes. Found out the fuel pump was shutting down. Listened to various videos and replaced fuel pump relay and then oil pressure/fuel switch. Ran for another 5 to 7 minutes and fuel pump stopped running again. Checked ECM for power to fuel relay and had power with key. Pulled relay and powered pump direct with fused 12 volts. Fuel pump ran for 5 to 7 minutes and stopped. Found out that truck was stolen years ago and a remote kill switch for fuel pump was added. A long story now shortened, kill switch was getting hot and interrupted power to pump. Replaced switch with a switch rated for proper amp rating and fuel pump operation now fixed. Patience is key in troubleshooting! Thanks though for the video!

Will I have looked high and low to find someone that could show how to check this particular problem out. My wife has a 1989 Chevy Blazer K1500 that just died on her way home. I know my way around with a wrench a little, but this computer controlled stuff always throws me for a loop. I'm on SS thus a very fixed income. You Sir have been a God send when I found your channel. Your explanation and visual presentation is just what I needed. Seems I had a complete system failure. Replaced the fuel pump and everything seemed ok, till my wife broke down again. "May" have been my fault for not attaching the fuel pump relay back on to the fire wall. Never the less, fuel pump was ok, your computer test was spot on. Bad computer, bad relay and bad oil pressure switch. All fuses and fusible links were fine. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Will. I need to mention that my service manuals have the fuel pump wire as gray. It is in fact tan with white tracer to fuel pump as is the oil pressure switch fuel pump lead. Also on this Blazer with Cruz control, the rotor cap must be removed and the distributor needs to be loosened to get at the oil pressure switch If you are ever in the North Western part of SC, I owe you and adult beverage or two at the very least. Thanks again Will.

Awesome video! After my trusty old Ford Explorer suddenly died with a trailer full of cardboard flatpacks on the way back home from IKEA the other night, I now need to chase down some gremlins to bring it back to life. Following your "mechanical / spark / fuel" checks, I determined that the engine cranks fine, then I hooked up a fuel pressure tester I got a few months ago when my 14 year old fuel pump could only muster enough pressure to run at idle. I installed a new pump, and all was well for a few months, but now I have 0 pressure. No wonder the car wont start or run anymore. I suspect the relay is also 14 years old, and thanks to your video, I know how to test it. Thank you!

This was a fantastic video. My fuel pump in my 89 K1500 wasn't working, and honestly automotive electric kinda scares me. I should have followed your video first, but being daunted by the electrical stuff, ended up replacing the entire fuel pump and assembly first. After that didn't solve my problem, I turned to the oil pressure sensor. Again, didn't fix the issue. Finally, I realized it had to be electrical, which was terrifying for me to deal with. Went back to your video with a new sense of desperation, and tested my relay. The numbers on my relay and yours didnt match since we have different vehicles, but the way they operate is the same, so I was able to match up which ones did what, and ended up successfully jumping it with a short piece of wire. Looks like I'll be buying a $8 relay tomorrow, and the $80 fuel pump and $30 in sensors lets just chalk up to "preventative maintenance"....

Thanks for the great video. I seldom subscribe or leave comments but this video was so helpful and informative I was compelled to do both. Great camera work, and perfect and easy to understand explanation of the schematics and troubleshooting process. The split screen description of the circuitry and testing was awesome. I just wish I'd have watched this before going through the hassle of draining 20+ gal of fuel, dropping tank, and pulling apart the fuel pump only to find nothing wrong with the pump.

A fantastic tutorial! Thank you Robinson's Auto! I found my 97 GMC 5.7 would only run on the fuel poured in the carburetor to prime it. After watching this video, I immediately went to the step where I jumpered terminal 30 to terminal 87. I heard the fuel pump start, but the engine would not run. While the fuel pump makes noise, I fear there's trouble with the impeller or something related to the fuel pump. I guess the next step is to verify fuel pressure at the manifold. This is going to be a little more difficult to do as I'm not equipped to do so. I hope I can find enough parts to assemble a test gauge. A loaner gauge from AutoZone showed 14 PSI at the fuel rail by the throttle body. Looks like it's time for a fuel pump. I have a new pump assembly in hand. Will also replace the fuel filter. As the tank had just been filled to the top when the pump failed, I'm not looking forward to dropping it. I'm not looking forward to raising the bed either. I'm going to cut an access hole in the bed of the truck. I like that simple approach. It's an older truck, and I can make a nice access cover. The access hole in the bed of the truck is the way to go! Be careful with dimensions that you find online. I found two different sets of dimensions and both were wrong. Following them would have given me a useless hole looking at the top of the fuel tank where there is no fuel pump access. I determined my own access hole location. It was very close but I had to enlarge it slightly once the hole was opened. Contact me directly if you would like my dimensions for a '97 GMC Sierra SL. 8-foot bed. C2500. 3/4 ton. High GVW. 8400 lb GVW. 34 gallon fuel tank. I'll be glad to forward you the dimensions for the hole location. The most difficult thing about changing the fuel pump was loosening the fittings when the lines transitioned from steel to rubber. For details how I was successful, feel free to contact me as well. Perhaps I'll make a video someday.

Thank you for your thorough review... In case it helps, simply using another relay with the same value and swapping it out may be faster... If the horn relay is the same, then switch it (sound the horn) and test to see if that is all that is needed... I am sure you know that too. Rafael

no need to jump a wire to check the fuel pump just turn on the key and listen in the gas filler cap if the pump is working you will her it running then shut off when it builds up pressure lol . most of the time your can hear the pump with out listening in the filler cap. the easiest way to check the relay is have some one turn the key on while you hold your finger on top of the relay . if its good you will feel it click under your finger and most of the time you can also hear the relay click . or you can just do like most do and have a extra relay in your glove compartment and just change it out to see if that was it. 2/3 of the time the modular in the distributor is your problem they cause many problems with starting . the modular controls both spark and makes your injectors in a throttle body system pulse and pump fuel into the injectors . if you have fuel and spark and it wont start check the wires at the injectors if it has fire leave your test light hooked up to the injector wire and turn the motor over the light should go off and on not just stay on all the time. if the light will not come on or go off as you turn the motor over the modular is bad change it and no more problem. the modular took the place of points for fire but also woks to break the fire on and off to the injectors to pump fuel into the motor. the first s10 I had this problem with I changed the fuel pump, then fuel regulator or meter , the injectors, and everything I could think of because I had spark and fuel to the injectors but no fuel would sprat out of them. then some one told me about the modular and what it did .I changed the modular and it was fixed. that was around 20 years ago and since then I have had several do the same thing and its always the modular. now I have hundreds of relays laying around and yes I will pull one out and replace it with another first but if that don't work I go to the modular next !if you run a old car or truck with the throttle body fuel injection system its best to carry extra relays in your glove compartment as well as ether another modular or whole distributor .

that was a great educative video , thank you for the time and effort to teach us all on thuis subject matter , i have a friend i have been helping since today : he owns a working pickup truck made : Chevrolet , yr 1990 , class K1500 , Eng : 4.3L V6 , last week i helped him replace entire front differential and axles with new upper arms and new sway bar adapters and replaced shocks with new to size ( the mechanic cheated him by installing cheap grade P 70 , rather P125HE recommended ( this made the vehicle drive with no problems ) , today ? he was driving and suddenly the truck choked and died out , symptoms : it cranks but wont start , checked : fuel pump, fuel pressure , sparks , distributor , distributor modules , spark plugs , wires : all came negative : working fine . EGR : working fine . cam valves : i checked them through view point of Engine oil cap off , they are cranking fine . the Question : what do you think in your experience causing it not to start ? i am thinking it has to do with compression ?

just wanted to add, you brought up a good point wish i would of covered the control side more in the video, now if the logic would be set up to kill the relay once run signal was achieved then yes that would work like that however gm didn't program the logic in that manner.what would of made more logical sense is if gm used the pressure switch to deactivate fuel when run signal achieved with loss of pressure, to protect the engine. most accident protections use a inertia fuel shut off switch

this video helps alot gmc, chevy trucks like dtc 54, is a problem with lots of people changing dtc 34 (map) and dtc (43) when you get a dtc 54 check your fuel relay and your oil pump switch these two work together that's way you get a carking bout no start, ,dtc 54 says fuel pump circuit fault or mixture control but won't say check your oil pressure switch. but some people think it's the fuel pump (some times)..

Very good video. Thank you for going step by step through the diagnostic process. Regarding the oil pressure switch mentioned at the end of the video - I believe that is to cut off the power to the fuel pump should you lose oil pressure to avoid catastrophic engine failure rather than provide an alternative power supply to the fuel pump should the relay fail.

Thank you so much for this video. You just save me so much time and money.. my issue was the relay..

Great thorough explanation . If stuck on the road with no tools , you could swap another relay with the same number of pins . If you had to hike to the parts store , you could buy a relay if no other one is available . And also some brake cleaner . Give it a small amount of brake cleaner through the air intake . Obviously , if it runs there is an issue on the fuel side and not a spark problem . That oil pressure switch is also good to check . I don't believe there is a Schrader valve on any GM TBI systems to check fuel pressure . Thanks .

Thank you, Yes great guy has a more advance approach for sure i learn from his videos, first to admit i don't know everything so when i cross them paths i study and dissect until i know it, therefore if i can project something in a way that makes sense to me than i feel many will relate, my approach; take the moments that made something make sense (that click moment "i got it now") relate back to them moments while sharing knowledge, seems to work most times lol

I'm glad his truck started but I wish it was something else!!! That's not our problem and this is the best video I've seen yet because he sticks to the basic equipment that DIYer can afford...that's why most DIYer don't take them into the shop, they can't afford 6-900 dollars of damage. Our car hasnt run for 3 weeks now, something to do with the security and we cannot find the problem!!! I was looking for new troubleshooting and some of this was new but not enough to help yet..But NICE
