This was EXACTLY the video I wanted to see. Perfect, I really wanted a side by side comparision of the 1980's AT-AT and the 1997 AT-AT! Thanks very much for your effort in making this.

Interesting video! Can the 1997 version accept the 1981 parts? I picked up a 1997 AT-AT at a thrift store and it’s missing the roof of the cockpit and the left cheek cannon. Thx!

Well, I have the 1997 boxed in storage right now so I unable to readily compare. What I can tell you is it is the same 1981 mold, so the roof should fit. Hasbro used different side and chin guns and I don't know if attach the same way. Sorry I can't be of more help.

@@classicalvintagecollector - Your response is very helpful, thx. I’m still checking eBay and eventually the parts will pop up there. I’d rather keep it all the same year, but I just wanted to check my options. Thx!

@@cjalexanderjr8811 If you're looking for vintage Kenner, repro chin guns are available they look and work great. That's what I use for my 1981 AT-AT.

Does anyone know how the cheek guns fit onto either side of the head? Do I push them down into place - or - do twist them in a circular motion until they lock?

I really feel i’m pushing down hard but am scared to push harder in case that clear plastic piece, on the side of the head, snaps. I wonder if the 2010 version makes it easier to attach the cheek cannon. Ugh.

So for the 97 AT-AT, it was ok to shoot projectiles, yet back in 79, Boba could not. Interesting. Great video.

I need to replace a broken chin gun on my 1997 POTF2 AT-AT. The chin guns have a peg at the top with a split. The peg inserts into a hole in the bottom of the AT-AT head. Not sure if I can pull down on the chin gun to pop it off, or if I need to take apart the head so I can push down on the top of the split peg from the inside. Has anyone ever done this before?

Thank you for the awesome description. I would first try using a flat screwdriver, placing it between the head and gun, then gently pull down. I have not personally had to do this, but it should easily pop it out. If you are replacing the gun, what does it matter if the snap pin breaks off in the process? If you want to save the gun and nothing is moving by gently prying on it, you may be forced to take my head apart.

For every improvement made, they took away something from the original. The gun control on the handle should've been kept & the view screen could've been flat against the side wall or in the rear using the original battery compartment to save room inside.

Agreed. I have often felt the same way. When I made my custom X-wing and snow speeder, I combined the elements of both generations of ships

I understand the inspiration George Lucas had in designing the AT AT....the cranes down at the Los Angeles port. But when every single ship, vehicle, etc in Star Wars has the ability to float....perhaps anti-gravity systems .... then why does the AT AT have legs. I will admit, if it did not have legs, then Luke would not have been able to crash it with the tow cable. But seriously, the ATATs do not need legs when they probably could be designed to float. As well, they are extremely slow. On the other hand, they do make for dramatic film making.
