I hadn't driven my 97 Civic LX in a few months because of the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic. The engine was idling fine a few months ago. When I started the engine recently, the engine control could not maintain a low speed idle when the engine warmed up. The engine would alternately idle high, low, high, low, ... Others have referred to this condition as "idle surge". Apparently, the idle air control valve was stuck open. To make a long story short, your video helped me to gain access to the idle air control valve. Luckily, I did not have to remove the throttle body or remove the IAC valve from the throttle body. I was able to "restore" and remove the "stuck open condition" by lightly tapping various points on the IAC valve with the end of a wrench. Thank you for your helpful video. Seeing the 8 millimeter bolt on the band clamp for the air filter case (at 8:55) was very helpful. Knowing its approximate location, I was able to locate it by using my finger, feeling around the band clamp until I could feel the head of the bolt. As shown in your video, there's no need to completely remove the bolt; just loosen the bolt until the air filter case can be lifted off the throttle body. (Actually it may not be possible to completely remove the bolt - so, there's no worries for losing the bolt.) Regarding the "idle surge condition", as the engine control commanded the idle air control valve to close when the engine had warmed up, I'm assuming that the engine control would simultaneously command less fuel to be injected. With less fuel, the engine speed (RPM) would decrease, the air/fuel mixture would increase (i.e., run lean) because the IAC valve was stuck open. With engine speed decreasing (producing less vacuum) and a stuck open IAC valve, the MAP pressure would increase towards atmospheric pressure. Somehow the engine control noticed either the increase in MAP pressure and/or lean air/fuel condition and then increased fuel delivery to compensate, thereby resulting in the high idle, low idle, high idle, low idle ...

The magnet piece spins as he shows in the video with the sensor removed. @@chrisfitzgerald2524 The thing is I did this and still getting the idle surge. Does it spin all the way around or does it stop? I bought a new walker brand and it spins without a stop. Mine spins and feels like it has a spring in side. Please can someone help. I have found alot of KZbin like to help people but only for the video not with questions. Why is that? If I posted videos and get a question if I can answer it I will. Not only here for the views.

What I did and was EXTREMELY helpful! Was use medium sized pressure pliers to break the seal on those very easy to strip screws on the iac valve. I tightened the mess out of the pressure pliers on the screw head. Turned just enough to hear that crack! Them used Philips screwdriver to remove. Easy peasy! Because YOU WILL STRIP THEM! Hope that helps! 👍👍👍

Do u know if the magnet that spins that's under the sensor that the connector is plugged into. Does that piece spin all the way around or only till a stop? I bought a new one from walker and the new one kept Spinning and did not have a stop. But when i installed it made the car keep idling weird. Thanks for any help

Very helpful information. I appreciate you posting this video. It was exactly what I needed to see especially good reminder on getting the air out of the radiator/water lines. I did this and it fixed my idle problem. But after driving for 15 mins, the check engine light came on and it started driving really choppy- like it wasnt getting enough fuel. When i put it in neutral and open the throttle by hand (or with the pedal), it is not smooth, causing the engine to bounce when it rapidly fluctuates rpms. Any ideas?

What about the gasket? Did you replace it? My 98 honda is missing bad but only at idle. The car drives great until I stop, which I have to hold the gas or the car will die. Do you think this could be the issue? When I bought it the guy installed a header and new distributor. I replaced the plugs and wires hoping to fix it but no luck. Looking for any advice this is my daily driver.

Thanks to this video I went ahead and removed the screws on the green casing to expose the rotor and was able to free up the seized shaft with carb cleaner. I guess my first cleaning wasn't as thorough and the problem eventually returned. I actually took out the screws on the other end of the shaft too, but I was careful with making sure everything went back together properly. Based on other pictures of the IACV, I just made sure the two adjustment screws were dead center. Under the cap at is a coil/spring of some sort. My guess is that it provides resistance to the rotor when the coil is energized. Any idea why this would be adjustable? I've scoured manuals, but nothing focuses on a teardown of the IACV, moreso just the replacement of it. Thanks again!

@TWIRKNOLOVE3 жыл бұрын
If you live in an extremely cold area, air rushing thru the throttle body can freeze things - worst case scenario, freeze the throttle open. The coolant heats up the throttle body to prevent this. Nearly all cars have this.

You want to use a multimeter and follow the specs to where it should be at idle. Then adjust to closed with no slack. Your idle control valve supplies air. Tighten up and Your done.

@yvonne25466 жыл бұрын
Not a mechanic but to me your problem sounds more like a fuel (too much) or air (not enough) problem. Tim demonstrated how dirt and corrosion (from coolant) can cause the idle to increase on cold engine starts. So we Civic owners with high RPMs on cold starts need to go in and clean up certain parts (throttle body and idle air control valve) to have the RPMs return to normal. Still you might want to clean the same parts. But also check to see what code(s) your engine is throwing. To read the codes, you need an OBD sensor. I think I read somewhere that you can upload an OBD sensor app to your smartphone. Or borrow/rent one. Good luck!
