The Lobos entered the 1997 season with high expectations and demolished Waco in Week 1. However, in the second week of the season, the Lobos traveled over 225 miles to face the Kangaroos in Killeen, accompanied by about 400 die-hard Lobo fans. In front of a packed home side, the 'Roos took a 7-3 lead at the half in a strong defensive game. However, in the second half, the Lobo defense was too much for Killeen as they held the Kangaroos to a 3-and-out on all of their second half drives, and Fred Talley sparked a memorable drive for the Lobos which ended with a 6-yard TD catch from Shawn Byrdsong to help give Longview a hard-fought 12-7 win. The Lobos avoided a major upset early on which helped catapult them to an undefeated regular season and appearance in the Texas State Championship game.
