@barry mccaca nowhere near as reliable as this. W140s (especially the one with the M119) don’t suffer engine problems like the E38, such as the plastic timing chain guides breaking and falling into the oil pan, trashing the engine… the M119 will run forever as long as it has oil in it. Can’t be said for BMWs V8

Bought one of these last week, 97 in a very dark blue with cream leather, S500 with 120,000 miles, full service history, 3 owners. Very original unmolested car, has the electric rear window blind and heated electrically moveable rear seats. Only thing I can see that needs fixing are the headlamp wipers and 1 front elec window is not going up or down on the 'one touch'. No rust, mint interior, re furbished wheels, good tyres, just needs a good polish. Drives well, brakes good etc, feel very special driving it and cost me just £1600. Not bad for a car that cost around 70,000 quid 18 years. ago!! WHY WOULD'T I????

Hard to find a reliable Mercedes these days esspecially the costs of repairs!
@1Reddd9 жыл бұрын
Aspie Otaku Not really, Mercedes engines are actually quite bulletproof. It's just that when things do go wrong, which they will because every car wares down with age, it will cost a boat load of cash to replace or repair. So when things do go wrong with a older Mercedes people tend to sell it instead of fixing it, which is why you can't find many Mercedes cars in good condition. Because the ones that ARE in good condition, are being enjoyed by the people who are willing to pay the expense to owning such a prestigious car.
@1Reddd9 жыл бұрын
***** That is true. Also learning more about your car, and doing as much as you can by yourself is also a way to avoid all the ridiculous repair bills... However, regardless of who repairs the car, a specialist or yourself, the price of the parts will almost always be the same... And parts for these cars aren't cheap.

Shaun Martin You see, the thing about Chrysler, Buick, Ford and all those other cut-down "luxury" brands is that they aren't made to compete with the likes of mastermind companies such as Mercedes, Bentley, Rolls Royce, etc. They are built for the lower class citizen who can't afford a Benz but still wants to ride around in something luxurious. Which is why they make budget cuts and use hard plastics in places where Mercedes would put leather or wood grain, so that way it wouldn't mark up the price. Cadillac, however, has greatly improved upon their quality and craftsmanship. Just releasing a flagship model to compete with the BMW 7 series... Also they've switched from using fake wood-like textures to using real wood grain and 100% real leather. Whereas a few years ago, in the CTS model, every bit and piece was made from hardened plastic. The same goes to say for the Escalade and models alike. So you can go ahead and mark Cadillac off the "poor man's benz" list and place it where it now belongs, in the European luxury car category, even though it's American.

I've owned both Mercedes Benz and Lincoln's from the 80's..and sorry to tell you this..but a Lincoln from the 80's is a much more comfortable car than a Mercedes Benz from the same period. My Lincoln Continental Mark VI was a dream to drive..soft cloud like ride..an AC that could keep an ice cube from melting in 100+ degree weather..luxurious interior..and beautiful looks that got me compliments everywhere. But my MB 500SEL while beautiful looking..had a hard ride over the bumps..a ridiculous AC with only 2 speeds..and leather that was cracking all over the place. All luxury brands have pluses and minuses..there is no one brand that does it all..so you just choose what is best for you.

My mechanic has a 1999 S500 and it is the favourite car in our circle. One interesting note with the button for the air filtration on the climate system: pushing that button activates a second cabin air filter which is several layers deep and has a medical-grade seal. This filter is about $300. The door seals also inflate with this feature, sealing out who-knows-what. If you run it in this mode, the airflow is significantly reduced through the vents. I would buy one of these if I had the money.

Its nice to see what kind of standards and options a luxurious car had 16 years ago! You can notice a lot of things that are considered standard now a days, but were state of the art in 1997. One thing I noticed was the auto closing doors, I thought that was a modern option from new Bentleys and Rolls Royces, but apparently, the options has been in existence for quite a while. I would have expected it to come standard on a average C-Class by now!

As you can see all of his videos say 'tour' at the end of them and not 'review'. He does take some for a spin once in a while, but since most are dealership cars and not his, I imagine he's grateful they let him inside them. I have a '97 W140...the trunk has soft close like the doors, you don't have to slam anything as hard as you're doing. Just pull it to and it does the rest, slamming it closed, doors/trunk defeats the soft close. This is also a LWB (Long wheelbase). These are harder to tell from the outside bc they put the extra rear seat length at the front of the rear door instead of the rear of it like the W126. By '97 w/the inversion of the letters/numbers, they deleted the "L" in the rear badging for "long", it couldn't be SL500 bc that was then the 2-door convertible, so you just have to look for if it is or isn't, no more "L" in the #'s/letters in the rear, long or not. You can easily tell the long from the short by the interior rear door panel, the door speaker is forward of the door ashtray on the long, whereas on the short the door speaker rounds under the forward edge of the door ashtray. W/all the lights on including driving lamp under the xenons, the park lights to the outside corners, the portion of the headlight not lit toward the grill is the HIGH BEAM, and all three stay on when on hi-beam, even the driving lamps if you have those on...so here is why the angled inside bulbs were not on, toward the grill, that's the hi-beam bulb. '95 was the mid-cycle refresh, still grey at the bottom though...'97 was the last update, my fav...the restyled slim exterior rear view mirrors, deep 6-hole sportier wheels, lower cladding now upper body color on all, revised headlamps w/xenons, revised grill, taillights w/CLEAR turn signals, still has the '95 taillight revision where that clear lower cross bar raises up into the taillights each side instead of even all the way across pre-'95. '97 you lose the power/memory interior rear view mirror AND the flip up storage in the front door arm rest, but gain the xenons/rain sensing wipers. Wipers have no DELAY SETTING, you can leave it on rain sensing all the time and it will work when needed, on click 2 is low speed and click 3 is high speed. '97's have the delete of the rear corner parking antennas that raised in reverse, and backup sensors were becoming common. This one has the cd changer missing lower left in the trunk, which has a cover that makes the top flush w/the trunk floor...it's all empty lower left. And here 11 yrs later, no big deal for you as surely it's gone by now, just saying. Thanks for the overview...main thing is it's long wheel base. All 4 windows also have auto power up w/a sensor to stop like if a kids head is out the window, lol. '97 made the odometer/trip digital, instead of old roll over numbers that turn. And the Mercedes biodegradable engine wiring harness issue was late-'92 thru '95, so you want to avoid those years anyway, unless they have been updated, or it won't run and you will have to reach deep a couple grand to replace it. '96 resolved, and on ALL Benz, not just the S...so post-'95/'96 are trouble free wiring harness, and the '97 is the last exterior updates of the prettiest...'97/'98/'99, go for it, you won't regret it. W140, still King of the S-class, and what Benz was before the cost-cutter W220 that Lexus caused Mercedes to make after the legendary W140.

This is back when Mercedes actually put quality and craftsman over technology like they did in the W220 and W221. Materials in the W140 were so nice, much more appealing and better to touch as well. I love this car, it looks very nice and in great upkeep and also has the biggest engine they offered for that at the current time. Between the S 320, S 420, and the S 500, I'd really want the S 500 for sure. Just maybe not in that particular exterior and interior colorway.
