I bought a Mercedes S600 with a twin-turbo V12 and I discovered that the auction ran it without oil. Did they destroy the engine?

Copart is trash. I was at their Phoenix location a year ago to pick up a salvage title F30 328i, and there was some 18-year-old kid who had flown halfway across the country to pick up a crashed WRX STI, he arrived at the copart location at 8:00 a.m., did all the paperwork and got the title by 10am, and his STI was delivered to him *AT 7:00 p.m.*! Everyone at Copart knew he was waiting for his car, and they did everything within their power to ensure that he had to wait an unreasonable amount of time to receive it. He politely inquired multiple times about when his car would be unloaded. All the staff blew him off and told him to wait and that it would be out soon. Seems like the staff was colluding with the auto transporters and tow truck drivers, and made it so that if you did not pay an auto transporter to pick up your car from Copart for you, then you would be last in line, no matter what time you arrived to pick up your vehicle. They made me wait an unreasonable amount of time as well, but luckily I showed up in the afternoon, so I was inconvenienced a bit less than the WRX STI kid was. Also, the lady who helped me with the title and the paperwork inside the Phoenix location was absolutely terrible. Almost refused to give me the title to my own car that I had already paid for. From what I've heard, all Copart locations are like this. They hire bottom of the barrel employees, nobody is happy to work there, and nobody takes any pride in their job.

Big mistake when reassembling the connecting rod cap: you must respect the assembly direction imperatively, because these are fracture split, so the contact surface with the connecting rod is unique on each side of the connecting rod cap. Ask me how i know. Hope you're lucky on that one.

There's gonna be a LOT of content. ABC valve blocks can be rebuilt for about $50 in parts. Hoses aren't too hard to do. Flushing the system regularly keeps the problems down. Inspect it carefully every year, and repair hoses when they show signs of deterioration to keep the DOOM away. Then 24 coil packs and spark plugs to deal with... Replace rotors and pads rather than just pads, replace flex discs... See you every week for quite some time Waldo! AND GREAT BUY! Looks like you WON the gamble!

Some of the damage underneath the car could have easily been from a fork lift. Just because the person that loaded it for you was careful, doesn't mean the prior moves were. I have been to many Copart yards and they move vehicles around constantly.

We have Copart here in the UK too (assuming it is the same organisation). They are indecently red-hot quick to collect insurance write-offs. My wife drove into the back of another car at 15mph during a coughing fit. They wrote her car off but I negotiated with the engineer on the phone and bought it back, and fixed it for no money. However, four days before he phoned but after I'd received an email from Copart telling me it was being written off, a driver from Copart called me on my cellphone & said he was en route to collect the car and would arrive in 35 minutes! I told him I would be buying the car back but he got pretty precious about it so I clarified the position by shortening the words & hung up. It felt like the vultures were dropping out the sky to start picking.

Copart did that damage with their long fork loaders. I picked up cars from IAA and Copart for about 12 years and transported them to salvage yards. It was very common for the operators at the auction to wildly pick up and drop the cars. Notice how the damage doesn’t have any rust? It’s fresh. Wacking oil pans was almost a weekly occurrence. It doesn’t matter unless it’s one of their “premium” sale cars, they are moving the cars around all the time with reckless abandon. The yards I delivered to used the shorter forks and we would pick up from the sides of the car but with caution

A lot of KZbinrs started out crawling under their cars on a creeper, like I would have to do, and as the revenue increased, purchased lifts, like a pro garage would have. But, that's the thing, I don't have that option, and would appreciate learning how to do repairs, and maintenance as a 'home mechanic' having the car supported on jack stands. Legit Street Cars has a shop that any car repair business would be proud to have.

I have some constructive ideas as a vehicle engineer. These rods ar fracture split, they absolutely unique and the caps can fit on only one way. The other thing is, you checked the lower bearing half, which is the unloaded side, the upper ones always have more wear or damage. My opinion is that, the guys at the auction thought they could get out more money from the car if they are listing it as run & drive and they didnt care about the potential engine damage.

here in the US most German cars depreciate horribly as people are terrified of the cost of upkeep after the OEM warranty expires. you can pick up some nice cars for cheap, but you have to be sure the vehicle you're looking at was actually maintained. by the time the average german car is 8-10 years old it's had a couple owners and is ready for the used car lots, where 95% of the time, they're bought by someone who can't afford to maintain them. sure the car might cost $15k used but it still has the repair costs of a $60k European luxury car. those people then proceed to drive the poor car into the ground, doing only the bare minimum work required to keep it on the road, because they still have years of payments on it.

Hi Waldo. I know of 2 cases where cars were driven for many miles with the oil light on because they were told that the oil pressure was fine from the prior owner. In both cases, the engines did finally start making horrendous noises, indicating to the new owners that the oil pressure was not actually fine. Just trying to say that having oil is very important but a few seconds run without isn't always a death sentence. Hope yours turns out to be fine.

No secret that Copart is shady as hell and generally dgaf about any of the cars they sell. One of the biggest annoyances is that they fork all of their vehicles(even if they’re run and drive) often times causing damage to the undercarriage. And yes, their fees have gone up exorbitantly over the years.

I just bought my first car from Copart with a relatively positive experience. I bought a 2022 car with 6000 miles that was a salvage car but it was/is pristine. It was listed as undercarriage damage but I found absolutely no damage. The only thing it needed was a battery charge from sitting in the yard for several months. I essentially got a almost new car for less then 1/2 the retail price. I did inspect the car in person and would highly recommend a onsite inspection for any car that there is any question about the condition or damage. I actually inspected it twice because I could not believe what I saw in the first inspection, NO damage. For pick up I scheduled a pick up when they opened and had my car loaded in 15 minutes.
