My MGM overheated for a minute and I turned it off. Now it wont crank or start at all and I did notice my shifter is not aligned right at all! I thought my engine was seized but turns out the shifter was the problem! Thank you so much I can now sleep tonight

Great video! Your the only one that had a decent video on the lowering of the steering tube. I followed your procedure to install a new shift interlock solenoid. I did it on a 1999 Crown Victoria which is practically the same in there. Thanks!

Just did this on my 98 grand marquis. Thank you so much for this video it made the repair so easy! In addition, there are torx screws if you look underneath while wiggling the shifter. Mine were loose and another video showed how adding loctite and retightening helps. Both of these completely fixed my shifting problems!

Luckily on my 96 Town car it wasn't the shift shaft it was the two t30 screws at the end of the shaft that hold on the cable were loose very loose and acted up pulled one screw out at a time put loctite on them reinstalled haven't had a problem since. Note:(do not try and over tighten that shift shaft is made of pot metal easily broken)

There's a little dial you turn to adjust the indicator for your range selector. It's near the part of the wire with the loop that hooks on to the shift tube.

I have an 02. I wanna swap out the black shift lever with the chrome lever from the older ones. I’ll just fix that too while I’m at it.

I've replaced the shift tube bushings and tightened the T30 Torx screws behind the shift tube that connect it to the shift cable. That fixed my loose shift tube but the transmission is not changing gears. The linkage inside is the car appears to be fine and I suspect the damage is in the cable bushing or the cable is loose underneath the car. Problem started while I was parking my car. I pulled in, backed out, and then in again. Went to put car in reverse but nothing happened. Any suggestions? Ps.. there was always a hissing/air leaking sound coming from something on the driverside whenever I have the shifter in D. If I move it back up closer to D, the hiss subsides

I'm an old woman and gonna bring my car in for this fix today. Wonder if they'll be insulted if I point them to your video!? There were more than one or 'two loose' ends you maneuvered about just to get to the broken unnamed worn out pieces...(unless they themselves were the "bushings" you referred to? ....and I'm sure your video would make their job easier. After all - mine is a 98 which means the mechanics would all have been 23 years younger whenever this car came out...and may have never even seen one of these cars...oh, dear. Great video!!! I'm tempted to do it myself...(not). So were they the actual bushings? Or some other piece just in front of the bushings? Thanks.

The plastic pieces Are what I call bushings . They might have an official name . That was the fix for my car however there might be other stuff that can go wrong like linkage problems. But most times it's those plastic pieces just wear out and then it gets sloppy.

i have a 1996 mercury grand marquis gs and my steering column have way too much play my steering wheel goes up and down and left to right and i want it to stay firm and not loose. my steering be hard to turn sometimes i thought it was my power steering but i have plenty of fluid so what can i do please help me out
@JLafix4 жыл бұрын
Wow. Its sounds like you have some loose bolts. The plastic bushings will affect the shifter but won't affect up and down or side to side movements. I would start looking at the four main bolts that holds the hole steering column in place. Check to see if any are broke or loose.

I have some slop also but it is much worse. I am having to replace the whole shift tube.

I'm not sure what the torque size was but in hindsight I probably should replace the whole tube as well because only a year later it started messing up again
