I am a rail worker and rail enthusiast so I must say a huge thank you to Chris for the opportunity to share his extensive knowledge and experience

This information is so gripping! So many aspects covered on the four rail system. I really appreciated this video. Many thanks indeed.

This film was made around the time that LUL were moving from their own power station to power from the grid, at that time the local supplier being the South Eastern Electricity Board (SEEBOARD). That meant that their generating station at Lots Road could be sold off, bringing a huge cash windfall. A large riverside plot in Chelsea can not be found in the average estate agent's window.

So that's why they abandoned Lots Road!

I remember when the 92TS trains were introduced on the Central Line. There was an issue with tripping breakers when these new trains were on the Hainault loop. Everyone and his dog were out on the track looking for the signs of a faulty cable: it turned out to be a fault on a cable leaving Lotts Road power station.

So, that's how the Underground is powered. Interesting. Thanks.

I bet compared to the video editors of today, that 1997 video was more tricky to edit than it would be today. :)

It’s not only the Underground. The Ex LMS d.c. lines in London, the Watford new line and the North London line were originally 4 rail, but were converted to 3 rail around 1970. I don’t know about the Merseyrail d.c. lines.
@NeilShearer-ok2gi2 ай бұрын
@@srfurley The Mersey rail dc lines are not 4th rail only 3rd rail like southern region there are still parts of the Watford DC lines are still 4th rail because they still share the same track as the Bakerloo line

And just in case any wannabe graffiti artists or other would be trespassers are watching this, beware, the tracks are LIVE 24/7! They DON'T switch it off at night as is too commonly believed in some quarters, except for short sections being worked on.

7:35 isn’t 11kW an error - they need to re-issue this film!!! By Ohms law (V^2)/R the power would be 630^2 / 300 = 1.323kW. If it was 11 kW the little wooden enclosures would be pretty toasty!
@EssArrB3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if a fault shorts the 200 resistor then the full 630V is across the 100 Ohm resistor, the dissipation is then 630^2 / 100 = 3.969kW. Still nowhere near 11kW
@maninacave3 жыл бұрын
I think the video chap may have made a wording error. I believe EssArrB:s calculation of 3.9kW is correct. The resistors would probably be RATED at 13kW, giving a safety margin of 3:1, rather than consuming 13kW.

I am in Australia now but worked out of Watford Junction Power Box, S&T Lines T/A. 1970/71/72. Just wondered if your name has anything to do with the Town of Watford?

Not just the South of England, Liverpool also has third rail.

And Glasgow has 3rd rail for its underground system
@majorpygge-phartt26433 жыл бұрын
All very interesting, but how do they manage on other underground systems like merseyrail and glasgow undergrounds where they only have the third rail? And isn't it the same on other systems abroad like the New York subway system?
@jslonisch3 жыл бұрын
They manage because the three rail only system is not as bad as was originally thought when they chose 4 rail for London. But the third rail only systems have higher costs in the form of more corrosion, more signal interference and more power interruptions, so they don’t totally “get away with it”.
@MervynPartin3 жыл бұрын
3rd. rail was used on the Waterloo & City tube line for most of its life until the old (Southern Railway) trains were replaced by Central line clones when the 4th rail was installed to avoid altering the trains. Also the Northern City line to Moorgate was converted to 3rd. rail when taken over by British Rail

I meant in the tunnels. Used to be done when no trains were running.
