Chris Evans joins U2 in New York during the first leg of their Popmart Tour to chat with with the band. For this he is granted access to the Lemon. As you can hear, Bono's voice is struggling. He'd been experiencing persistant problems with his voice around this time.
Recorded the day after their New York gig, this film was broadcast as the end section of the TFI Friday show on the 6th June.

Cool to see this. After the PopMart opener in Vegas in 97, the rest of the tour was pretty much ignored by MTV and the media in the US. MTV had all but stopped playing videos from the Pop album after Staring at the Sun. It was before the internet really blew up too so you didn’t get a lot of news/footage from the tour that year.

The summer of 1997 when POP came out I was 18 and had the time of my life and I rocked that album all summer long, I was getting into car audio and put together like a $3,000 system which was a lot of money at the time I was so happy when I got it done, it sounded amazing

Bono was annoyingly cool back in the 90's era. Really quick witted with charisma. Liam Gallagher slated U2 this year saying they've never been rock n' roll, I think they were back then. Liam can barely string a sentence together though, Bono always had a witty reposte for any question.

@SNoone89 I think it’s probably to do with Bono being good mates with Noel. A lot of people say the feud between the Gallaghers is exaggerated, but they’ve barely spoken in 15 years. Liam’s kids were being nasty to Noel’s daughter on twitter as well, they’re not on good terms as a family unless something’s changed.

Their last really good albums were Pop in 1997 and All that you can't leave behind in 2000. After that they just lost it although they still have some good songs.Bono's voice changed a lot because of smoking and drinking and their music changed too but what bothers me is that now they have become completely different. Pop is different things to different people, I like some songs from it and feel that others needed more time to work on. Pop wasn't garbage, garbage albums don't reach number 1 in 35 countries. It was merely unfulfilled potential. Wouldn't say they went mainstream at all after it, they changed their tune. Roman clearly hasn't heard No Line on the Horizon cause that has some cracking songs on it which are very similar to Pop. Music is different things to different people, but it's just a wonderful thing that U2 has a catalogue which is so diverse

Excuse me? That was their last great momento of inspiration. Since then they´ve been dead, or nearly, except for some glimpses. Ok atomic bomb managed with the nostalgia thing. Period. Buy some new ears. Pop must have been the best of that year after ok computer. They took risks, sometimes failed. But garbage? you obviously have no idea, not even with the perspective of all these years. Man, and I´m sure they still defend that horrible "beautiful pay" they got with their next one.
