Some bits and pieces post-POP were great, at least IMO, for instance "Get On Your Boots", "The Million Dollar Hotel" lp but to be fair I haven't even heard the last two records and I don't care anymore whatsoever. Same relates to Depeche Mode. Their last great LP is "Ultra" from the same year, afterwards they had a couple of good songs including "Wrong", but I haven't even heard "Spirit". My instinct tells me it's sh*t. Looks like 1997 was the final year for most 1980s superbands when it comes to creativity.

I totally disagree. All that you can't leave behind is a brilliant Album which brought them back to the basics. POPis good and has its moments but it still could have been better had they given it more time. And How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb is brilliant to me.

A one of a kind record. The band said they needed more time to work on it, but I think they needed less. It was overworked and should have been a straightforward rock record tinged with electronica. The band went too far in trying to ride the wave of the scene at the time and lost themselves. I was 16 when it came out and recall just being confused by the entire thing. All of a sudden a very hip band was a posh, sporty looking act and everyone was expecting some kind of techno/electronica record, which it really wasn’t. They should have just remained themselves from the early 90s with this record and released almost any song but Discotheque as their first single, maybe Do you feel loved or last night on earth.

The more people hate on U2, the more I will savagely defend them. They have been so important to me since grade school. I know they are not as good as they used to be, but they still make some good jams sometimes. "Pop", which this TV special is supporting, is one of the deepest albums of my life. So fuck off if you dont like them.

I've never understood the hate some people have for this incredible band. What have they ever done wrong? They're one of the best bands of all-time, in my opinion. I love their Pop era. It was inventive, creative and adventurous. U2 trying out new things, I love that.

I am a Heavy Metal fan Hardcore! and even I love U2 they are something very special period. in my day we never had to defend what we liked sad that the web has turned Music into this sort of thing. celebrate the music and memories with others who do as well and someone who does not like it should respect that and just not say anything. or click on stuff they like seems simple to me of course it does not work that way don't Fight with each other music should unite people... and i feel a spirit on unity with U2 and i am sending out my love to all their fans....

I've been a U2 fan since almost their inception (or at least when their music first hit the US). However, I was obsessive about, and so hung up on, U2 only up until Joshua Tree, that when they completely changed tack in 1990 to Achtung Baby, I FREAKED, and divorced myself from them for about 5-7 years, because I couldn't handle it. Years later, I rediscovered them again (late 90s), dipping a toe into Achtung Baby, Pop, and Zooropa. I was already a fan of electronic music, so I was HOOKED. And then I proceeded to kick myself up one side and down another for YEARS afterward, realizing what I had missed during that time. It was truly their most heady, iconic, colorful, flamboyant, amazingly creative era, and I completely missed it! The experimental music, the outfits and personnae, THE LYRICS....it was all just mind-blowing. I lived on those 3 albums (CDs) alone for months and months. I've always been a day late and a dollar short on most things in life, but this really is one of the things I most sorely regret--not being a part of that "U2 era" and seeing them live during the 90s, when I had the chance. So Jim, I'm with you, I LOVE Pop, in fact, it's now my all time favorite U2 album. Who knew???

Honesty when you listen to the albums Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop it all sounds like a trilogy

I still love this album, although they did actually release better versions of Please (Please is perhaps one of the greatest songs ever written) and Last Night on Earth when they were later released as singles, although I suspect these versions developed from the live versions they were doing on tour. My only regret here is that the band went on to regret this album and tour, leading them I think to go backwards since this, although they've had some great songs since (One Step Closer, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, In A Little While, New York, Magnificent, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, Raised By Wolves).
@pant-hootingchimp89178 жыл бұрын
They don't regret the tour, from what I've read. They think the tour is one of their best ever, but they're dissatisfied with the Pop album because they couldn't finish it the way they wanted. Shame. I do like the album a lot. Not every track but there's some good stuff on it. The tour was brilliant. I love watching the Live In Mexico DVD. Apart from poor Bono suffering ongoing throat problems that tour he was still on fire, performance wise and the whole show is incredible! I wish they would be this adventurous again! :)
@CarlosBacardi8 жыл бұрын
+Spader Holic I actually think from a musical. performance (e.g. Bullet the Blue Sky, even Pride, which they've generally played too slowly since the early 90s) and even visual point of view, PopMart was even better than Zoo TV, although Zoo TV's cultural impact couldn't have been bettered, simply because of how much it changed their image, surprised the industry and revived their career. PopMart was the first time I ever went to see a band, 2nd September 1997 (I think), at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

@19:41 "musical nostaligia" - Bono, U2 of the 90's would have hated what they have become, no more avant-garde experimental amazing music now from them just corporate music now, 80 and especially 90's U2 were truly the best band on earth, they certainty did have "all the colours", 2000 onwards they've had a few flashes of their brilliance but not enough, they've released good records post 2000 but as the man said 'good is the enemy of great'.

at the beginning of zootv they lost me. Their further "evolution" no longer appealed to me at all, sounded old-fashioned and opportunistic to me. Sometimes they scored a hit. Fortunately, other bands came along in the 90s who could make "the beat" that continues to appeal to me to this day. Nirvana, AAF, FooFighters, Blink182, the offspring, Linkin Park.... Metallica have always been true to themselves and I kept coming back.... U2 was a thing of the past. I agree with Larry, he became the outsider in his own band and was completely ignored. Now that they have started again, often without Larry... there is still that bad aftertaste. Disrespectful... SALUTE to you Larry. ...You were the humblest of the gang... that tattoo was well chosen...

POP was a great album, unfortunately it came after Achtung Baby which is considered by many to be one of the best albums ever, POP can be considered a "sophomore slump" IMHO because U2 essentially became a new band in 1991 But I think a lot of major bands hit a slump in the late 90s, mainstream music was a mixing pot of musical genres during that time
