Oh god, my sides, I'm laughing like a lunatic at that shot from Damien Fleming at 4.01. Absolutely classic. On one leg, the head goes back, huge swing, massive grin. Hilarious.

Good series to replay on a lazy wet day. Gough had a great tour gained even more respect and made a lot of friends. Ramprakash did well, Hick got a lot of starts but didnt go on enough, Headley came in and went well, however no consistency and dropped catches hurt, but that is the game. Good footage of MacGill in action. That storm on last day of 1st Gabba test was monumental. Tx for the upload.

Ricky Ponting wasnt a natural Slip Fielder he fielded mostly at point, probably upto 2003. When there were 4 or more slips, he would be the 4th or be at Gully. And he wasnt a regular in Test Team at this time Mark Taylor was the most natural slip fielder, Mark Waugh was probably the greatest, Shane Warne wasnt far behind and Healy hands down the best Wicketkeeper of the 90s

Thorough professionals, that lot. Bowlers were so disciplined and nothing went down in that cordon. The difference between the application of both the sides is glaringly visible. English catching in Brisbane and Perth was shambolic. Poor Gough should have had much better rewards.

I think Butcher was unlucky to be given out LBW in the 2nd innings of the first test. Definitely looked like it was going to turn past the stumps. Also Slater was clearly out in the SCG test match by a foot . How the 3rd umpire didn’t see that is unbelievable. It cost us the game and the chance to draw the series. We lost the series 3-1 but we deserved a 2-2. The 2nd and 3rd test matches, Australia were brilliant and deserved their victories but we should have won the last 2 tests instead of just 1.

Hick was such a frustrating player. On his day he would score a hundred and either win the game or get us out of trouble. Yet when he wasn’t switched on, he would get out to silly shots sometimes. Shots he didn’t have to play. Mind you Australia back in that period were so far ahead of everybody else. I thought we did well to make a fight of it in most of the games.

@@jasoncole767 - Hicky said not long ago, when asked who was the best England coach he played under: “That’s the problem. There haven’t really been any.” Shane Warne said he was a player who’d really been messed around. Maybe the county attacks he carved up with alacrity didn’t test his technique to the extent that was needed.

@@nathanwilliams2152 he could do it against Australia as well. He made 206 for Worcestershire in a warm up game before the 1993 Ashes series. Mind you Warne didn’t show any of his skills in that game, which Border told him to do on purpose.

I went out to watch the 5th Test at Sydney. We fought well and I will never forget Darren Gough taking his hat-trick. It was right at the end of the days play and loads missed it by getting off early. We had a bit of a raw deal in that game as Michael Slater was certainly run out on 24 in the second innings but ended up getting a matching-winning century and when we were chasing 287 to win and Butcher and Stewart had got us off to a good start, Butcher was out to what was a no-ball.

Back then we didn't have a warne or McGrath or even a Stuart broad or Jimmy Anderson. The other thing about Australia back then was if one or two were having a bad game then another one or two would play brilliant and win the game. Then another couple of players would play brilliant the next game and they would win it. England didn't have that on that scale.

Can't believe the Indian batsmen spanked this same McGill on almost all subsequent tours. Showed their character and technique. Hell we spanked Shane Warne into submission on that same 1998 tour. I remember Sachin Tendulkar in that Mumbai vs Australia where Mumbai scored 400 in a day, Sachin 200.
@soulsphere9242
@soulsphere9242 Ай бұрын
MacGill only ever played in one series against India in 03/04, so one tour, not all subsequent tours. Of course, as usual an Indian must find a way to bring India and Tendulkar into every single cricket comment section, which shows something about the character of Indian fans: no grace, nor humility.

The annoying thing for us was that we would get Australia in a bit of trouble in games but we couldn’t capitalise on it. The first test being a prime example. We had them at 100 odd for 5 yet Steve Waugh and Ian Healy took the game away from us. Dropped catches obviously didn’t help either.

Mate - how the hell did 3rd umpire didnt give Slater out in last test 2nd innings when everyone knew he was out including the commentators? Remove Slater score and ashes would have been 2-2 ..this is extremely unfair and there should be a committe to overrule that test because of that decision :)

But for the dropped catches in Brisbane and Slater's run out in Sydney, England getting something out of this series or possibly winning it isn't out of the question.

What I said makes perfect sense. England had chances (which they didn't take) in Brisbane and the TV umpire got a big decision flat out wrong in Sydney, so I'm saying England taking something out of the series was a possibility. Every trip since then bar 10/11 you can't make any argument for England getting anything from those series, Australia were miles better.
@joshforde698
@joshforde698 3 жыл бұрын
@Sean Jeez, why so mad? I'm simply stating that England could have won two of the tests, which is pretty obvious and taken a draw from the series. If my comment bothers you so much just ignore it. Australia won fair and square, but England COULD conceivably have got a draw or even a win out of the series.

@damo24now So? It's not the only viable technique. It has its pros and cons, much like the choice of fingers-up or fingers-down catching. Prior pulled off one or two run outs in the previous Ashes series with the technique. I played with a 'keeper who used the technique. If done right, I actually think it's the superior method, though it comes with a higher degree of difficulty.

Always Loved Stuart MacGill - one of the BEST Leggies.... Only one to keep Shane Warne Out & Even out perform the Legend - whenever they played together...... Tough that Injuries ruined his career. England were a Quality side; but unfortunately, Athers Never really could figure out Glenn McGrath or Allan Donald (Overall in his career)......So they never really could cope up with the BEST !

He didnt keep Warne out.. Warne had a surgery. If it wasnt Sydney, McGill would have sit out. McGill was 2nd Choice to Warne, it wasnt about injuries. Both Warne and McGill had their share of long injuries. And England were far from being a quality side. They were mediocre in 90s. A side that kept tossing games at home cant be considered quality by any means

@damo24now Okay, I've seen the incident now. Actually, I disagree. If a fielding side can actually drill this, a fielder taking the ball in front of and taking it to the stumps is an excellent technique. Prior used it well to run Hughes out last Ashes. That was just a bad execution of the technique against Waugh. And a costly one. And I have no respect for anyone calling the English side 'poms', by the way. I consider it the same way as idiots calling the Aus. side 'convicts'.

@damo24now Yes, I'm entitled to my opinion, since I've played first-grade cricket - something I highly doubt you've done. In other words, my opinion is worth far more than yours.
