Geneva Towers in SF was a similar story to Pruitt Igoe in STL or Cabrini Green in Chicago. They try and make it seem like the owners failed to upkeep but it was actually the government.

Right. There was nothing wrong with the actual buildings of the projects and most of the people who lived in them were decent people. it was the government’s neglect.

I once lived there: A-building, 1514 then 415, 1980 to 1988. We were literally the only white family there at the time. It became a horror show at times, but for the most part, it was not as bad as people thought. The funny thing is, the fear and violence brought neighbor together and form long lasting bonds that are tighter than kin. I could care less about the actual buildings; It was the experience and the people that I most appreciated.

How was the gang violence from the youngsters there and the neighborhood
@Malcadon2 жыл бұрын
@@justmejm As far I remember, violence was low-key -- out of the eye of the building's private security and Patrol Specials -- as there was no reason to bring on the heat. In the '70s and early '80s, drug dealers were laid back and really kept a low profile, but then gangs cracked down on them to muscle on the trade. We had a neighbor who was dealing -- dudes forced Drano down his, and his girlfriend's throat, but sparing their 3 year daughter's life. At a friend's birthday party, a young man was thrown out a balcony and the adults knew that it was both gang and drug-trade related. (The adults gave us kids the option to see the body -- to witness death and toughen us up -- with no pressure to do so, but I did not look as I did not want even more nightmares. I did watch as the SFFD hose the blood down a drain.) When the building was getting cleared for demolition in the '90s, crews were pulling body after body out the service tunnel connecting both buildings -- this was an area residence avoided due to rapes -- and the crawl-spaces in the garage. Despite all that, the Sunnydale projects was WAY worse! Dont let that cheery name fool you! As bad as things got in The Towers, it was* never* as bad as the Sunnydale Projects! (I have no story about that, as it was something everyone agreed on.)
