Vic, I have a 1994 SL500, I was told to reset you turn the steering wheel full to the left and right, and then windows all the way down and up and it should be reset. It worked for me twice when changing the battery. Hope this helps. Also you can manually lock and unlock the cylinders manually, and see if the red lights disappear.

Thanks. This one had a couple of issues. I found them all and the roof works fine now. It was more difficult since there were few faults at once. Usually it's just one issue, this one had few faults. Reset is needed everytime you replace or disconnect the battery to sync windows.

I don't think I can get involved doing the tranny reverse at the moment. Too many projects on my hands ...

it is most likely the reverse lockout pin, it requires you to change a spring. you can do it with the box in the car.
