1999-2004 Jeep Cherokee transfer case replacement

How to fix, or remove, and replace a transfer case in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is a 242 T-case. Will be the same job for lots, and lots of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and GM trucks.

If anybody happens on this, here's what I did for the top bolt: use the Harbor Freight transmission jack to hold up the transfer case, then take out all the crossmember bolts. Drop the transfer case all the way down and your wrench will have enough room on top of the transmission to get it out.

Are most fill/drain plugs, (like oil pan drain, trans, etc) NPT tapered threads?

i had a clunk and grinding noise from the front recently. My mechanic disconnected the first driveshaft and it went away. i never use the selec trac so i dont think the transfer case is worn out i have a 242 transfer. could it be a malfunction with the transfer case switch?? how many sensors or switchesare on the 242np. i have a 2004 grand cherokee laredo with trail ready badges 155k on the clock. 4 1/2 inch lift with 265/70/17 tires. please help!!!! thanks in advance. btw when i select it into full time 4 x drive theres no light indicator on dash when i select other like 4 part time i can see the indicator light on dash is that normal?. i think it worked fine in full time 4x. i only notice the problem in full time 2 wh dr. what could it be?? it usually happens after 20-30 of driving

would you know answer to a question since you work on these? I just did a tranny swap on a 2004 jeep liberty. swapped the tranny and transfer case together. Both Jeeps 2004.The donor jeep shifter has less like 4 high 4 low, the jeep i put into has 4 wheel part time , fulltime, and low. In other words I assume its technically 2 different transfer cases even though tranny same model and transfer case fits. The question is is there any problems with the differentials like is there a gear ratio in each transfer case?will my differentials work with any proper transfer case or are they mated by model. Does that make sense? I'm now worried about having a mismatched drivetrain. Hoping its OK, seems to drive ok

If the axles are separate from the transmission, and transfer case, you have nothing to worry about. If the front differential is in the transfer case, I do not know. Usually a front differential is .01 numerical ratio higher. You would need to find out what the gear ratios are in that scenario.

@@RustBeltAuto thanks yes 2 separate axles with 2 separate driveshafts its not a front wheel drive with 4x4 its a jeep liberty rear wheel drive when not in 4x4 mode

You using wrong lubricant, u need to use Mopar Lubricant for NV245 NV247 NV249 Transfer Cases

@@RustBeltAuto The old ones are pretty easy to work on. But it's too bad how much they break. My dad's '87 Wrangler was pretty easy to work on. Loved to eat radiators for some reason. Replaced 3 of them....
