This was the last year G Bugles were used. My best friend and I used this tune for our pre-show hype in '99 when we marched for BK. Only it was the 1974 recording back when the horns were a gnarly electro-chrome plated, trigger valved nastiness. I saw BD throw this down after the Normal, ILL show and I almost lost my sh*t. True Drum Corps tradition. BD still showing their roots.... And they were hard core! Listen to the '74 Purple Lancers too if you ever get the chance. I love that era....

I was a Blue Devil in 74 and 75. We played Legend both of those years. Bonnie played the mellophone solo. Arr. by her brother Jim Ott.

I marched '76-'80 (hi Randy), continuing the Legend streak all the way through '78. Was probably about the right time to put that to bed for a while, after five years in a row. Despite all our success, still jealous I wasn't able to play and march '75. Still one of my favorite BD shows.

Hi, ConnerMello --- "Legend" is indeed "ancient". Chuck Mangione wrote it sometime in the early 70s, and it first appeared on the now out-of-print and hard-to-find album "Alive!", which came out in '72. I believe BD first did it in '76, with Bonnie Ott doing the famed mellophone solo and duet part. The '76 "O-E S" used to be out here on YT, but BD are picky about their stuff being posted. Pity; it's great advertising!

My friend marched in the late 70s. I only called drum corps a band ONCE. I learned my lesson real quick. LOL. I wanted to march but sadly it never came to pass. Oh well. DCI fans and members are fanatical when it comes to that sort of thing.... and why shouldn't they fanatical they work hard to perform up to the measure they attain.

Where was this? Allentown? If it was, I saw this live. They just parked it on the 50 and blew the grandstand back 10 feet. What makes this sound different (I won't say better) than the 1976 version is how the instrumentation of the corps changed. The 1976 version was b@lls to the wall screaming sops and altos. The 6 member 1976 contra line playing piston/trigger pea shooters had to balance that wall of treble. Same with the baritones. The 1999 balance is different, there are more baritones and contras in this era. The low and harmony parts stand out beautifully. The score is fantastic. The 10 or 12 monster G contras were right up front . What a glorious sound it was. Noting sounds like G bugles

The same as it would work on a three-valve soprano, just with no third valve. So anything with a 1-2-3 or 2-3 combination would have to use an alternate fingering or lip the note to it's correct pitch. Hardly an issue since low D-flats and E-flats were RARELY written for 2 valve G's. Not all G horns are 2 valved, though. I played on a 3-valve G bugle myself. Love it, since I'm a mello player. :)

Because no one in Drum and Bugle Corps played on B-Flat horns back then... The Piston-rotor horns were the standard legal instrument until about 1980ish, when they legalized 2-valve horns. I'm mixed about the whole G-Bugle issue. I played on the piston-rotor horns and the 2-valves in my 6 seasons in a corps, and they we're really well-made until the Kanstuls at the end, and they're a pain to tame. A lot of B-Flat horns aren't real good, either. Cheap, woofy, etc.

Electric Wheelchair (the bit you're talking about) is actually derived from a military/patriotic tune, though the name of the piece escapes me... I think Electric Wheelchair was written in 1992 (maybe 1991,) and I know Legend was written wayyyyy before that.

@claybo13 The problem to me is that manybe... BoA needs to be BoA and DCI needs to think in a slightly different direction than BoA, but I think there's so much cross-pollination it's likely too late. I like BoA for what IT is and think it's fantastic, but DCI doesn't need to be that, be more itself. 8)

@AzrealMaximus4 жыл бұрын
@pearlsnaredrummer77 DCI gave up its soul when it went to Bb horns. I marched in the 70's in NYC, piston/rotary to 2 valve. The sound just reverberated through the stadium. The pit is okay, timpanis carried them cross strap with extendable legs for solos. Amplification outside the pit, should've told everyone what was obvious. Follow the money. Olds/Ludwig/Kanstul/Conn/King/Bach/Getzen closed the doors. Loud bugles make for a great show. The same follow the money on amplification.

@@AzrealMaximus im so glad we are done with out of tune nasty G bugles
@AzrealMaximus2 жыл бұрын
@@hardcorehistorybuff5230 preference to sound projection 125 member corps individual sections could be heard vs having amplified equipment to project the same, in the same stadium. Two distinct sounds evolved DCI/BoA, now it all sounds the same. Bb brass is not GD bugle hence the name Drum & Bugle Corps. I believe kanstul could've tweaked the tubing to clear any anomolies in pitch, but DCI wasn't about all the Corps, just the top money earners for them. Kick backs from certain equipment manufacturers, now all you need is wind and a full string ensemble to put the Death of Drum & Bugle Corps finally. Marching bands is what it is now.

Imagine or try to play a b flat trumpet with the third valve held or taped down using only the first 2 valves… If I remember right, it’s the same key and notes as a g soprano. if that makes sense.
@agogobell2811 жыл бұрын
Well, they were NEVER written for 2 valve G's. Because they were impossible without pitchbending.
@BruceRichardsonMusic6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely that arrangement was written for two valve bugles. In the practical playing range they were almost 100% chromatic...and it was simple to arrange around those limitations. The practical difference between three-valve and two-valve bugles was nothing, really.
@cairnman1005 жыл бұрын
@@mtesports1924 true. I marched in the '76 horn line. Very little difference between 2 and 3 valve G horns. Missing Ab, low Eb, D and Db. Trust me, there was NO pitchbending necessary to play this piece.

Nice. I marched Music City this past year and I wasn't a big fan of our horns. We had Jupiter Tribune Series Trumpets. I hate Jupiter in Drum Corps. Makes you sound incredibly brassy and bright. Just look at Phantom. The years preceding Spartacus they had Kings which they sounded phenomenal on like in Harmonic Journey and Faust. Now they've lost that clarity of tone but still sound incredible nonetheleast.
