I have noticed on some of the CDI timer bases that the grove that the ring fits on can have glue from the factory, not letting the ring and the timer base rotate smoothly

Yes. I also used a digital photo tachometer I purchased from Harbor Freight to confirm my tack readings on the following trip out. Since this video I've put close to 150hrs on it with it running great with the exception of the fuel pump acting up. I'm getting ready to delete the vro system.
@rouddypierce23942 жыл бұрын
Hey this is a great video. As I was reading the questions and answers I noticed you mentioned that you were going to delet the VRO. Did you get around to doing it? If so what pump did you go with and did you remove the pulse limiter at the same time? Thanks for the video it was perfect!
@mcculloughadventures15352 жыл бұрын
Rouddy, thanks for the compliment. Just trying to keep an old wore out motor running. I have not deleted the VRO yet. I might make a video out of it. I don't want to tell what pump I bought yet because I'm not sure if it is the right one. When I do replace it, the pulse limiter will have to stay because with out it a backfire could destroy the pump. I will pull it out, clean it, and test it for proper function. I also plan on doing a vacuum test to see how much draw it takes to get fuel to the pump and make sure it is not sucking air somewhere.
@georgeanddaddecker7563 Жыл бұрын
Why not make it simple and just replace the VRO. If you do, please don't forget to run at least one full fuel tank of pre mix through it to avoid an air gap Len condition seizing your newly repaired outboard.

i got a 1997, 225hp johnson, almost looks identitcal to this but white. wouldnt turn on 3 mechanics said it was dead, 1 mechanic said i had to pay 1500 to replace the stator and he couldnt gurantee that would fix it, but ofcourse he will take my money. i found a mechanic on the side of the road and he said these outboards are ford tough and he can fix it, sight unseen in 2 minutes. i brought it to him, and he turned on the outboard with a paper clip and a flat head screw driver in 3 minutes lol

They are tough engines and not complex. Every year I tell myself that this is the year I will have to repower but it just keeps spinning the prop and polluting the air!

Before the fix, did you have an issue with the engine going into guardian/limp/slow mode? Where at WOT, it wont go past 2K rpm!
@mcculloughadventures15352 жыл бұрын
I did not have any issues of it going into limp mode. It was just having a hard time starting and getting on plane.

had this issue with my 225 vro 86 (white engine) the rpm will go up easily outside water but once in the water it would not pass 2k rpm issue was linkage/timing ajustement

Small adjustments and you will adjust it with less struggling and over adjustment. Also not the safest way to do this.

Yes they go under the power pack and you said it was all original I don't think so they were never blue in color black only. Retired tech of 48 years
@mcculloughadventures15352 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmurrietta2263 I stated that I replaced all three ignition components at 2:47 & 18:25 in the video. I replaced everything before I made this video on setting the timing. I pulled it apart last night because I was concerned about the grease. The grease still looked like it did when I put it on there, no drying out, but I wiped it out and will find out this weekend if goes back to sticking. Hopefully that aftermarket timer base is broke in by now. I also took a look at the wiring and while they may not be ran the way they were from factory I couldn't find an issue with the way the wires are ran. I've put over 150 hours on it the way it is so I am leaving it the way it is. Given you are a tech with 48 years of experience, what are your thoughts on the VRO system. While I was on vacation in the keys over the summer the VRO failed on me and I could not find a replacement. I did find a shop that had a replacement pump that eliminates the VRO. It looked like two standard pumps connected together, I assume it needs two pumps to keep up with the fuel demand. I installed it and it seems to working fine all though premixing the gas is a minor inconvenience. Should I put the VRO pump back on it?
