What few people realize is how much slope is on that 17th green! I caddied at the club for years and it's a bear of a green. What an insane putt.

Daniel Duarte I went to the 2013 US Amateur which was played on the same composite layout as the Ryder Cup and US Open, that 17th green is both insanely small and insanely sloped. The 18th green is even smaller, I literally couldn’t believe how small it was, and no run up either, just a tiny little circle in a sea of rough and bunkers. Insane

The same Stewart that said "On paper, the Europeans should be caddying for us"? What a sportsman-like comment!
@MrAJR76

You’re quoting him totally out of context, and deleting the humourous way in which he actually said it. He was responding to a reporter’s question about why the Europeans kept winning, despite being much lower in the world rankings. And in 1999 that disparity in the world rankings was the greatest it had ever been (just look, it’s easy to find out on the OWGR archive on their site). It was totally tongue-in-cheek, and clearly not meant as a criticism - you only need half a brain cell to know that. Westwood & Clarke saw the funny side of it, and picked up Stewart’s bag the next day offering to actually caddy for him!

*If it was the Europeans that made that putt they would do the exact same thing. They were just **_extremely upset because they thought the win was in the bag the night before_** since no one has come from 4 down to win, etc... **_They probably already had Victory T-shirts and hats printed up the day before as well._** **_So to get their ego and pride blown apart like that,_** all they had left was to find some reason to complain as if that was going to change the outcome or something.*

Lets be honest the celebration was absurd and improper. Reigning Masters champ has a putt from inside Justin, to tie ? And you're running all over the place, on the green, like you won. I don't believe Josè Maria's line was compromised, but still. Credit to Leonard his back 9 was unreal, from way back, to catch the awesome Olazabal.
@surindersingh724
@surindersingh724 6 ай бұрын
It wasn't absurd or improper. It was an outright disgrace. This is the EXACT moment where the Ryder Cup became a nasty, unfriendly and ungentlemanly tussle between the US and Europe going forward. All credit to Olazabal. An absolute gentleman who just let it go and continued with his putt. If that had happened to someone like McIlroy, Garcia or Hatton then the Americans would have been waiting until the next day to celebrate their victory. There would have been no putt. The next 3 hours would have been just a blur of swearing, club breaking, squaring up between the two sets of players and complaints to the tournament directors.

@@TheLocalLt Got our asses whooped first two days (obviously). Lots of turmoil and controversy going into the tournament. Ben Crenshaw was heavily criticized after first two days. Then, everything changed Saturday night the moment he made his "fate" prophecy at the press conf. He then called a full team meeting and everyone hashed out their beefs. Then he chose the shirts for the next round. Those ugly shirts that had nostalgic photos on them. They played an odd part. The players were ready to do the impossible. Ben Crenshaws leadership shifted the psychological tide. It was absolutely legendary. When you woke up on Sunday, you just knew we were going to come back. It was in the air. And the crowds at Brookline were so loud and even disruptive. Many spats between golfers and spectators. Never forget Olazabal on 17...he had to back away from his putt twice because a bus driver a half mile away was revving his engine as hard as he could, knowing that Olazabal was trying to tie the match. Go back and watch his putt on 17. Youll hear the bus revv its engine 😂😂 It'd never go down like this in todays world.

@@RichCMoney like I sad I’ve seen this highlight movie so I know the story by heart but I just haven’t seen the actual raw day-long footage of day 1 and 2, I have of all subsequent Ryder cups as I started taping all the rounds through the rest of my childhood starting in 2002, eventually i did this with all the majors, plus I now have a copy of this 99 Ryder cup final day, so you can see how those raw broadcasts are something of a grail for me. You don’t get to see tee shots, short game, etc, on this highlight movie, and as much as I like the narration of this and remember most of the lines, I’d like to hear the original commentary as well. One thing I’ve always been interested in from those broadcasts is to see just how badly Leonard was playing on Saturday, since he isn’t shown much on Saturday in this movie, to make Johnny Miller say that he should have “stayed home”. I’ve seen how he fell 4 down to olazabal and came back, on Sunday, leading up to the monster putt. A few years ago I was at the country club for the 2013 us amateur and went to some of the well known spots from both the 99 Ryder cup and the 88 US Open, it’s pretty unbelievable how small some of the greens are, the the layout really did seemingly favor the Europeans, which is probably why all subsequent Ryder cups have been held on much bigger golf courses as opposed to a small and tight golf course like brookline. The slope on that 17th green is incredible, and that back part of the green is tiny, it’s understandable why these guys came up short and had that long putt, because if you hit it hole high or past, and missed the green on either side, you were dead

Fantastic memories and experiences for you. You hit the nail on the head. I also suggest the 93 PGA Championship at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Azinger beat Norman in a playoff. Norman lost to Bob Tway in the 1986 PGA at Inverness on a miracle bunker shot on the 72nd hole. That's what started the Norman Curse. The losing the way he did in 93 at the same course...Norman never recovered. I was there for 2 practice rounds and I think thurs and sunday. Def was there Sunday, sat along the right side of the 18th green and scoreboard watched all day long with my pops. I still have the magazine/program with Hubert Green, Jack, Arnie, Azinger, Tom Kite, Phil Mickleson, Ian Woosnam, Vijay Singh and others autographs.

That's crazy I was there every day until the end. Tom Lehman let me hit the golf ball with his club. I was driving around delivering food to tents. Wow it's been a long time since then now I'm 54. The last day was crazy they threw all the liquor in the dumpsters because it was miscellaneous they had to get rid of it and they told us once it's in the dumpster well and I only just be careful with the bottles that's broke you can take what you want. You should have seen us Boston and New York Brothers who work there we got all the Hennessy and the cognac it was crazy the telephone wire people was asking Brothers to get them some liquor vodka it was crazy. I went home on the public transportation bus with two big garbage bags full of liquor. It was crazy. I made a lot of money you could work around the clock I talked to tiger woods that today. I'll never forget it. Good memories

@@annefilippobertozzi7601 I will assume this is Fillippo's comment and not Anne's. You may think my thoughts are BS. But all I am doing is echoing Mr. Gray's comment in a different way. And while I believe in good sportsmanship, it's those who complain about the lack of it that tend to be the losers. Why don't you just let the US team enjoy the moment? He made the hard putt when it mattered the most. That should be celebrated!! Had Olazabal made his, the celebration would have been just as great. BTW, Mr Fillippo, I still stand by my guarantee 😎.

@@timaugustine9382 sorry, but not at all: there is a time to celebrate (and the US would have had all the rights, for an incredible comeback), and a time to respect your opponent, that could have still squared the match, while the party on the green spoilt his focus. That hard putt was not yet decisive: Olazabal’s was. It’s not a matter of winners and whiny losers, it’s objective.

I'm sincerely surprised at how the Europe All Star team is able to beat our guys at the last possible moment. No problem with that whatsoever. In this case, we have the lead going into the final day, and then collapse all of a sudden and give it up. The miracle at Medinah being an example. Worst still, Europe was kicking our butts at this year's Ryder Cup. I'm not trying to criticize the Europe team, but coming all the way back to beat us after we clearly had them on the ropes is absolutely incredible.

There should not be any “retaining” of the cup. All other championships in sports free their cups for the next competition in the following years. If there is 14-14 tie, pick a couple of players to play hole by hole sudden death playoff until someone wins a hole. You don’t retain a cup after all that work and preparation and time for both teams - you go out and WIN it !
