I was lucky enough to be at this one for a day as a 13 year old while traveling with my soccer team from Pennsylvania to Scotland and then on to Sweden to play in the youth World Cup. I remember some of my teammates spelled out “TIGER” across their bellies trying to get on tv and I also got an Open hat autographed by Freddy Couples. Had a heck of a time that summer.

The quality of these Official Open films is brilliant, particularly on those which are 20+ yrs old. However the contrast on this is very high. Nonetheless, a big thank you for these uploads. It is amazing to view these detailed abridgements of historic sporting events which still convey tension and excitement.

Think of it like this. Most golfers, including Tiger, rarely have their “A” game. Tiger mopped the field repeatedly with his B/B- game. When the A game made an appearance you had outcomes like most of 2000, this Open and a few other blowouts. Mind you this was taking place against the worlds best and in major championships.

Yeah, Tiger's 2 most dominating major victories happened very early in his career, the 1997 Masters and the 2000 US Open and even at the '97 Masters he got off to a very slow start on Day 1 and had to recover on the back 9 to insinuate himself into the tournament as a contender. After the top 2 dominating victories, I'd say the majors where Tiger was on "cruise control" were ones like 2000, 2005, and 2006 British Opens and the 2006 PGA Championship.

It's common knowledge that every time Jack retired from a major, Tiger won it, but this one's especially fun. Jack was the only player from World War I onward to have won two Opens at St. Andrews, here he permanently says goodbye to the game, and here comes Tiger to swoop in and match that feat.

I was there, got some 5 pound notes of Jacks. Got some photos of Tiger in the practice round on the 18th. Tee. Played Lundon and Leven links and Carnoustie had 78 there at age 60 , pretty happy with that. 4 of us from Melbourne Played for a month at some of the most famous links courses...England, Scotland & Ireland ...best course was Waterville in Ireland

It’s very difficult to compare the best of the best in several eras in this sport just because of how much not just technology has changed but also the golf courses and the competition but being from Ohio it’s a tough one for me but I see it like this Jack Nicklaus was the greatest major champion of all time everybody knows 18 is the number but one of his craziest stats is he finished 2nd an incredible 19 times a couple shots here and there and that record could be well out of reach even if Tiger didn’t miss all those years do to injury. But Tiger woods is the greatest golf to ever walk this planet Jack never lapped the field by double digits and dominated the field like he did for as long as he did everybody knew they were playing for second there was an Intimidation factor like this sport has never seen Jack was long but next to technology Tiger is directly responsible the game becoming exponentially longer starting with his overpowering performance in 1997 at the masters and that’s still apparent to this day all the best players in the ball can move it . In the end they may have not been at the top of every statistical category but they had an uncanny ability to summon there best stuff in the biggest moments much like Michael Jordan and Tom Brady

@@wesleyhu1656 The overall standard when Woods was blitzing all before him was higher yes indeed but there were still only 3 or maybe 4 serious competitors to him similar to Nicklaus when he won the majority of his titles. The top players of the 80s and 90s were by and large past their best by 2000 and I can only really think of Els, Duval (for a time) and later in the decade Mickleson consistently challenging Woods. Granted in the last 10 years the competition has increased again
