Thanks Dan, I got tired of folks making those videos like, "I turn this and that and it's done!" I grew up helping my dad at RoHo Towing in Meridian Idaho fix cars. When I discovered I could post video's on fixing cars, electronics and misc items I stated posting. I try to gear the video to the newbie mechanic and include everything I think is important and what they might run into and what not to do. I was an Aviation Electronics Technician for the US Navy until I retired in 99. So that could be one of the reasons I try to cover all the bases. Thanks for the very nice commment Dan. PS I live 22 miles North of New Orleans, I saw your video on your parents used to fly you to grandmas house there. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

@@keithnoneya after posting that thank you, I went out and replaced the starter in record time (for me) with very little trouble. Knowing about that unusual bolt that secures the grounding wires was extremely helpful. That plate was indeed a little tricky to get back in place. I have a very large pair of forceps that were very helpful for keeping it in place as I fit it back together. The job was unusual in that the installation took me longer than taking off the old part. Usually it’s the other way around. The video was extremely helpful. Thanks again and great job!.

I would put some dialectic grease in the terminals, to prevent corrosion, and get good connection, very good video , Thank you
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 7 ай бұрын
The terminals are electroplated to stop that. Adding grease there attracts dirt and then dirt holds the moisture in and then the it corrodes the electroplating. It is however good to put grease in areas that have a seal or are not in an area where moisture can get on it easily, say high up in the engine bay. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. I can't thank you enough for this video Keith. My van has had intermittent starts lately. My daughter and I almost got stuck in the parking lot earlier this evening on a Sunday night. I called my auto insurance to get towing service but could not get a live person on the phone. Aftet 30 minutes of trying, I tried the trick I learned from another video, tapping the starter with a tire wrench. We were able to get home safely. I then took my wife's car to buy a starter at my local automotive store. Good thing they close at 9pm on a Sunday night. I've watched your videos at least a couple times. I've also watched the other guys' videos where they took out several parts in order to gain access to the upper starter screw. Totally unnecessary. Following your method, I was able to successfully replace my starter. May your video help many more. Thanks again man! God Bless!

I am pretty good at being able to get into just about any spot and also work with things like that plate. Comes partly from being a mechanic for decades. But even I need some helpers at times. One way to keep the dust shield plate to go in easily is maybe the bolts, maybe even just one, could be run partly in as you are installing the starter and then along with being on the alignment pin you are on the way. Another way for a real bugger and what may work for newbies to not get frustrated, take a lot of time or even end up with more problems would be to use a couple small pieces of string or zip ties through one or both of the starter holes to hole the plate on. Maybe just the bottom one would do it. Then you will have to have a way to cut those off once the starter is in place and you have at least one bolt going in. May be able to even rip the tie(s) off by pulling with pliers if you can't get cutters in to where they are. (edit after doing this job): I had installed these before but only when I was doing a rebuild and r&r of the trans (years ago). I had the AT mount out and more access in the area so it was much easier. I had to change my friends starter alone this time. I put some tape over the plate bolt locations to hold the plate on but when I tried to run the starter straight in it could not get any closer than about ¼ inch. I took a look and I see the plate has to partly slide under the block as it gets up to the trans. So I took the tape off and just put a small zip tie on the alignment pin to hold the plate from falling off. Then carefully slipping the starter in that all went smooth. I pulled the tie off as soon as the pin started into its hole. So I don’t think I can recommend tying the plate on other than that way. Rest of the job went smooth otherwise. Now he has a rotation of the crankshaft instead of a clicking sound.

LOL me too! Even if i've done the job before I like to review videos in case I forget or find some extra tips. Your tips could work to. One thing I found after working on vehicles for over 30 years is there's more than one way to skin that cat and no two mechanics do the job the same way. More than one of my viewers said they used masking tape to hold the plate on and it worked for them.

@@keithnoneya Yes that may be all it takes. Wiggling the starter into that location is likely to knock the thing loose so it needs some help if a soft touch wont work or isn't possible. I have also learned to slow down when trying to fix cars. Trying to muscle things is rarely the way even when using a hammer.
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 2 жыл бұрын
@@fcaughli Yeah I definitely agree, learned that the hard way on a few jobs when I was younger. One in particular comes to mind. I was installing a set of Headman Headers on a 74 Trans Am and got pissed and threw a wrench against the ground. I bounced under my arm and right through my daughters bedroom window. She came running in, looked at it and said "DAD! I'm telling MOM!" My wife came out and looked at it, then looked at me and laughed, and said, "Having a hard time with this one huh? Handed me my 7/16 wrench back and said, "Try not to break anymore windows dear?" Gave me a hug and a kiss and went back inside. Slowing down or walking away is always a good idea on any job that's starting to get frustrating. Thanks for the nice comment and watching. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

I was a professional designer, developer and marketing person for more than 12 years. I am always amazed how good videos are produced on here. Some more polished than others. however, its all about how it translates. Yours is done very well! The only thing I would suggest is to do pauses where you were showing things far away for a couple of seconds and show a red circle around the focal point! I sure wish you were in Texas because I am about to do this, in grass, no shade and by myself in 110º heat :(
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 6 жыл бұрын
Viral, thanks for the tip. My goal is to strike a balance between a person who easily understands mechanics and someone who could do it if they had a teacher. I actually started doing some of what you suggested in some of my videos. Editing these videos does take up some time, so I usually just skip the bells and whistles as much as I can. If I was in Texas and close by I would be there to help you out, put a flat carpet down on the ground, it will help with itchy grass, bugs and heat. To help beat the heat and sun I put up a mechanics tarp as I call it. here's link to it: kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=9A6Y85cy-jg - I have a subscriber who lives here in town and he contacted me about a truck video I did. He couldn't do the job easily and he needed his truck for doctor visits. He offered to pay me a small fee to come and do it for him, nah, I just went over and did it for lunch. He bought me a pizza and some sodas. We had a fun time and I got to teach him some things about his truck he didn't know and how to fix it, I like to teach. When all was said and done he pulled down $150.00 dollar grill kit from his garage attic that he said he didn't need and it had been there for years. I told him he should sell it and use the cash on his truck. He wouldn't take no for an answer. When I get time I'm going to install it, but I'm way to busy to do it, as my Pathfinder is broke & the washing machine broke, the house needs fixing and I have a car to paint etc. etc. Normally I'm careful about letting folks contact me in person, never know who's out there trying to scam ya, or worse. Well gotta go. Feel free to ask questions. PS drink a lot Gatorade so you don't get leg and arm cramps at night after all sweating in the heat. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

Hey great video. Just a few tips. You can access both bolts top and bottom from underneath when you're reinstalling the starter. This way you can hold the starter to reposition it to line up that top bolt. Both bolts can be tightened by hand.. Also use some anti-seize on the bolt and that'll make it easier when you have to take it out again.

Excellent video, well lit and very enjoyable to watch. Have you ever just repaired the solonoid instead of the complete starter replacement? If so, as good as you are at making videos it would be great. Thanks so much for this one.

Thanks for the nice comment Skip. Nope they I never considered it. I suppose I could have but I didn't think that was my problem as it did start, but very slowly. With the van being 15 years old and over 200,000 miles on it I figured it would be more reliable to just replace it. I did notice that the rebuild kit for the solenoid was only about $22.00 bucks and some change. Thanks for watching and the comment. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

By the way always read my comments below the video. I stuff them with updates, parts, tools, chems used and useful information. Also reading the comments can give you some extra insight, as there are some pretty smart folks out there commenting. Oh nice vid "Dance with my Father". Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. This is Dave, been playing since 10, goin' on 59 this year. I use KZbin to upload my music here dev213.fandalism.com/greeneye656 for fun. I have all genres. If you 've had a hard, long day and just want to chill and hear a relaxing tune I'd recommend "Project Earth", if you like country, my first ever attempt "Back Home" (no pressure). Thanks again Keith, really appreciate you kindness.

I like Country, Rock, Bluegrass and some techno from time to time. Late 50's myself. Couldn't go to work today as the roads were closed due to ice on them and the place I work is closed too for the same reason. So I thought I would spend the day on the laptop goofing off. Haven't loaded a new video for a month. But I've been working on one on how to clone a hard drive to a larger hard drive for your laptop or desktop. I also do KZbin for some spare cash. I initially did the videos just for fun then a friend saw my channel and said you make some pretty good instructional video, you should do it for fun and make a little cash on the side. He showed me how to do it, so now I make about $100.00 a month on it providing free videos on YT. You should do that too, your music is really good. I started off making about .23c a day about a year and a half ago. I make all my video with skip-able adds in case the add sucks and folks just want to get to the video. I could probably make more if I didn't do it that way, but its ok, it's not that much anyways. Anyway nice to meet you Dave. Feel free to send a question or comment anytime. Ps my son plays in the church band. You can check him out here: he plays lead. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYLXdWN-ncZoors Matt and Hannah were the Teen and Music Pastors at church and this was the last time they played for us. Anyways don't want to take up your day so I'll catch you later. Keith Noneya

Thank You Keith for the video! I have watched several this morning and yours is the most clean and concise of them all. I only have a couple of questions for you though. I have a 2007 dodge caravan, that for the past year on occasion would not start. only dash lights came on and I could hear the fuel pump turn on. No clicking. I would try again and she would fire up, no problem. Last week, it left me stranded and the mechanic that got it up and running said he replaced a rotten starter cable. I drove it twice and guess what? it left me stranded yet again within an hour from getting it from the shop and is doing the same thing. lights and fuel pump, but won't turn over. and no clicking. I've been told that it could "possibly" be the starter. I know its a time consuming job and cant afford to pay out another 300 dollars, do you honestly believe it is the starter? and do you think a 48 year old woman with a ton of determination could do this job? Thank you in advance! Keep the videos coming, and btw I have subscribed! Best wishes from Canada! Sue

Hi Susan, I was going to say a rotten battery cable, it happened on mine too, but I see you've already tackled that problem. Since I can't even see the car and put my hands on it, it would be hard for me to diagnose it, as much as I would like too for you. Honestly I would call the mechanic and have him give it the once over again, usually they will cover a look see under a warranty. - Here's a few things that can cause that problem: 1. Bad battery connection; clamps or corrosion on the the cable clamps. 2. Bad connection on the starter. 3. Weak or dying battery. If you can jump the car with a set of jumper cables, it's most likely one of the three above. 4. Bad Fuse Box or the wires on the bottom of the box can be loose or have corrosion on them. 5. Bad or dying ECM, if you replace it from one in a junk yard make sure and get one that has the right code on it. You'll have to do some forums research to figure that one out. Vehicles ECM's are coded for engines & Options. 6. CPS, (Crankshaft Position Sensor), they are cheap and readily available at the parts store. Some mechanic shops will give you a free diagnostic, or only charge you an hours worth of work to diagnose it. If you op to have them change the parts, yep it's going to cost a few bills. However if you have a friend who is mechanic savy you can get the parts on eBay or Amazon at about half the cost of a retail store. If you have Amazon Prime the part should be here in two days. Here's some more options for you: - If you attend a regular church, you can talk to the Pastor, Priest or one of the Deacons, sometimes they know the mechanics in the church and they can either do the work for you for free if you buy the parts or sometimes they will pay to have the work done for you, or charge you very little to nothing. - If you don't attend church some of them have benevolent funds available to help folks like you. You just have to call around, most will put you in touch with a mechanic or someone like me who's not a mechanic but works on cars and knows their way around vehicle maintenance. - Get a Haynes or a Chilton's manual for your car at most auto parts stores, ~ $25.00, and go through the procedures in the book.They're usually pretty good at getting you to diagnose the problem. One of them should be on how to test a starter. - If you get the starter off most auto-parts stores will test your starter for FREE! You do have to take it off and give it to them to test. ** To answer your question, can you do it? Well if you're physically able to turn a wrench and SAFELY put a car on jack stands I think you could do it. I have women all the time on my channel do the work. I think I even have one who did this starter and thanked me. *** Safety FIRST ***: If you notice I post my videos for "Entertainment Purposes Only"! That's because I can't control what or how someone will do the job. Always learn as much about the job and how to do it safely before doing it, no car is worth your health or life. Never work under a vehicle that is not properly sitting on jack stands, wheels chocked, brakes set and in "Park" for Automatics or in "Gear" if a Manual. If you have a truck use Heavy Duty jack stands. I wish I could help you more, but I think this will put you on the right track. - Worse case scenario. you'll have to bite the bullet and pay someone to fix it. I monitor my page several times a day so feel free to ask questions. Sadly, as I can't control your safety and what you do, as always my advice is taken at your own risk and you have to verify the advice I give is right and safe for you. With respect; Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

Just a note. I replaced mine this morning. Found that I could not get the starter to seat correctly. Took it back out and sprayed some brake cleaner and followed up with my air hose to clean the goop out of the area. Fit right in the first time afterwards. Also the metal dust bracket only fits one way. Otherwise the bolt holes in the starter don`t line up correctly with the holes in the bracket.

you compared the 13 and 12mm bolts. and chose the 13mm. question: you wouldn't be able to use the 12mm bolt anyway would you. since the stud only accepted a 13mm bolt??
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're referring to the 12 & 13 mm (nuts) at time index 3:20, not bolt? If you are, I chose the original 13mm nut because it had built in bumps and detents to make it self locking, and the new one didn't have those and was not the original outer size. The inside threads on both nuts was the same so the stud would accept either nut. The only real difference is that the after market company chose to make the outer part of the nut accept a 12mm wrench or socket instead of the original 13mm. Why they did that I don't know I see that a lot in aftermarket automotive parts. Also the aftermarket 12mm nut didn't have a quality anit-corrosion coating on it where the original one did, so I chose a higher quality nut. You can use either nut you want provided it screws on and tightens up properly. Thanks for the comment. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

How to replace starter solenoid
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was designed to be changed, as it's the main body of the starter. Normally the solenoid is what comes off the main body, but in this case it's the motor that comes off. I suppose you could take it all apart and figure out how it works and just change the contact points if those are bad. I've done that on a Toyota 4-Runner before, but not for the Caravan. If cost is an issue you could always pick up a good used one at the wrecking yard/auto-recycler. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

factory manuals many times have some insane ideas of how to repair their vehicles. Like a lot of things they have various reasons for that and a lot of them have nothing to do with doing things the easiest or best way. Good grease monkeys can look at something and figure the best way. No reason to disassemble more than you need unless you have major problems with being able to work in tight spots.

Absolutely not. It is a shim and not just a dust shield. You would be changing the depth that the starter drive teeth engages. Possible on this model that would be ok, but I would never take the chance it would damage the starter or worse the trans torque converter. If you do that you have major problems.
