Great explanation, My hood wasn't popping up when I pulled the level inside the car, had to wedge a piece of wood in the lever then pull the hood to get it to pop up (rather annoying). I lifted the lower pin at the back of the mechanism as you did and now it works properly. Before this nothing I tried was making any difference. Many Thanks.

Literally bet there loads of people need this video this helped alot after second attempt of finding a useful video, I broke the thing that pops out that you pull to open the bonnet as soon as I brought it and I have no idea how the latch system works so great help I can now get bonnet open first attempt

last night this plastic tongue came off and I can't open the hood now. how did you open it?

wowo this video really took off ! Glad it could help some people. they key point in the hood latch mechanism that *likely* needs to be bent back into position, can be seen at 1:50 in the video. Some explaining about it before that point.

I've been having hood latching and release problems on my 2004 Golf TDI since an incident March. I've been low on windshield washer fluid for months and didn't want to pop the hood for fear it would take an afternoon to close it again. I just came across this video and it saved me some $200 from having my mechanic fix it (replace the whole latch assembly - which actually would have worked in my instance, and cost a lot more money). Thanks for a great, brief, and super informative video! My issue is that the preliminary latch (supposed to be the middle piece on the engine side of the latch) had been pulled above the two pieces it was supposed to be between. (Don't ask how it got that way.) Less than two minutes with a screwdriver to reposition the prelim latch piece and some pliers to straighten things out again and the hood latch works properly for the first time in 6 months!!

Here we go. Mine was a different issue where after putting it all back together after a rad install the hood wouldn't latch closed. I finally ended up ordering a new one just to first figure out how the mechanism actually latched. It took several looks but finally I saw how it locks which led me to realize that just a slight shift prevented the piece controlled by the heavy spring to rotate down enough to engage a corner cutout on the release lever which is almost impossible to see. All I had to do was loosen the three torx screws on the original latch and wiggled it up as far as it would go and then retightened it all back. Takes about 10minutes. Btw, you don't have to remove the plastic release lever or the grill. Just flip up the grill once loose and all three screws are accessible.

I snapped cable at hood latch lever inside car and the other end the cable popped out at hood latch system under hood and cant get hood to open at all. 2001 TDI what the hell do I do now. Had to be towed home last night because of battery failure
