This is where one of those little OBD scanners connected to the Torque app on your smart phone can help with finding if it is a stuck infector. You'll want to look at the Short Term and Long Term Fuel Trims. If the Long Term Fuel Trims are showing a negative value then it suggests that the ECU is constantly having to pull fuel out of the system to keep the engine running at the proper air/fuel mixture. In other words the engine is running to rich with fuel when the fuel trims are negative. That's when you might start to suspect that there is a leaking injector but could also possibly be a failed fuel regulator. Checking the fuel pressure is a good diagnostic as it'll show if the fuel pressure is bleeding down from a leak or if the fuel regulator fails to adjust pressure with engine RPM.
@4WheelKid2 жыл бұрын
For sure a great idea! I learned all about fuel trims later on. And helped me diagnose my van, fuel trims are such a great diag tool
@heftyjo2893 Жыл бұрын
@@FonzoCapone Short term trims just show how the ECU is adding or taking fuel out of the injector pulse at that immediate point in time. The Long Term fuel trim is essentially an average of the short term fuel trims over a longer period of time. So, the Long Term trims shows how the computer has been consistently managing the fuel delivery over a long period of time as so are a good diagnostic for the fuel system as a whole. Short term trims I believe can be useful if you are diagnosing an O2 sensor.

I have a 99 4runner with 224k on it. Ran beautifully until acouple weeks ago when it started misfiring on my wife. It said cylinders 1 and 6 were misfiring so I replaced all the spark plugs, which it actually really needed them. I used the NGK Iridium IXs. However, it was still misfiring, but not all the time, only sometimes. I replaced all 3 coil packs and the waste spark wires with NGK units. Still misfiring after that even. Had #3 misfire on my 99 4r, initially replaced the Fuel injectors but that was not the issue, it was the TPS. #3 spark Plug had a carbon stripe (1-2mm) down the exposed porcelain causing a misfire under acceleration. Replaced #3 plug, ran good, but the carbon streak and misfire returned to the #3 plug within a week. It was the TPS, once changed along with a new plug, all was good. From my research this has occured on other 3rd gens. No idea why this occurs from a bad TPS but it does, so if it's not the coil it may be the TPS, if there is a carbon streak on one plug.

darn sounds like your having a rough time. could be an injector but could also be a wiring issue like rodent chew or something, don't want to rule that out. I looked at a trade-in at work one time where the oil pressure light was on constantly. someone had already replaced the oil pressure sensor and didn't fix it. they probably traded it because a "Mechanic" said it needed a new engine. I followed the oil pressure sensor wire and under the airbox, there was a mouse nest and they had chewed the wires up. I repaired the wires costing my work next to nothing and it was fixed. Before you go any further if not done already I highly recommend compression testing all cylinders to make sure the misfire is not a mechanical issue so you don't waste even more money and that way you know for sure it's either a fuel or spark problem. Also, the misfire numbers are not always accurate on these 3rd gen 4runners. do you have a link to those Denso injectors? I couldn't find any densos when I was looking. I just don't want you to get fake ones, because there are a lot of those out there. I also got OEM injectors from Toyota, for about 160 each, I ask for the dealer-to-dealer wholesale discount because I work at a nearby dealership. they always give me the discount without question. The oem injectors are made by aisin. I also dropped the tank, cleaned it out and checked for rust, replaced the pump with a Denso because that is oem. replaced the fuel pressure regulator and all 6 injectors with oem, and a wix fuel filter, now I won't have to worry about anymore fuel problems for another 20 years.

see if you can put a spark tester on each plug while your having the misfire. could be a coil pack potentially, but you want to figure out if it's fuel or spark. probably not a compression issue since it acts up all the sudden after start and restart. another thing you could do instead is after it misfires for a bit, pull all the spark plugs to see if a specific one is fuel soaked, that will narrow down which cyl it is. does the check engine light come on? that might help but I hear these older runners are not very accurate at detecting the correct misfire that is missing

My '99 runs great when you start it up after it's been sitting, but if you stop to go into a store and restart it it runs rough and the check engine light will come on. But if you let it sit a couple hours it runs fine again. I saw a video that described this same problem and it was the injectors. Cuz that's not a small job, I've done plugs, wires, and MAF. I thought the MAF nailed it cuz it ran good even after shutting it off a couple times, but it's back to doing it but not as bad. I really don't want to do the injectors if I don't have to. Any ideas? Thanks. And I hope you're an engineer or something using that big brain of yours! Also, no fuel in my oil
@4WheelKid7 ай бұрын
Your gonna have to get creative and figure out a way to diagnose, use a stethoscope to listen to see if each injector is firing. Now days I would just use a thermal imager looking at the exhaust manifolds to see which cylinder is misfiring and go from there

I'm having a misfire on 4 on my 97 I did oem fuel injectors new denso coilpacks new sparkplugs oem and gaskets still has misfire. But noticed white smoke and coolant shooting out of cylinder 4 so I assume head gasket blown.bought a k&n intake and cleaned my maf still miss fires really annoying so im Not gonna waste my time fixing it and resurfacing heads and hot tank cause I also have a oil pressure light on at idle then goes off when I hit the gas so I'm looking st used motor and ima swap it out and then rebuild this one and flip or keep for back up also mine won't over heat ran 30 minutes without getting hot even with misfire nothing electric looks wrong I'm stumped on it😢
@4WheelKid Жыл бұрын
Yeah thats not good, sounds like the head may have warped and blew the head gasket. Oil pressure light sounds even worse, probably time for a new engine, you could do a leak down test if you really want to, but sounds toast from what your describing

Jeez those compression numbers are low for that motor.. i got an 03 and all mine are 195 +\-5.. but i had issues with new injectors dripping after shutoff. Causes lazy starts or will die when starting after shutting it off recently.. never stuck.. but have had an evap issue for years.. smells like gas a little every now and again.. and cant fill it with gas like you should, clicks off all the time.. checked all lines and seems all good but gave up on it..
@4WheelKid Жыл бұрын
Its lower cause I live at high altitude. Compression isn’t an issue with my 4runner cause it doesn’t burn a drop of oil. Are they oem injectors from Toyota? Everything else seem to be junk. Maybe something wrong with the vent system, or anti siphon device

Great video! My 01 read misfire on 6, 3 & 5, took it into my local Toyota dealer...and they charged me $500 to tell me it was misfiring on 6, gave no reasoning why or how and said I need a new engine. Then one of their techs called me and offered to cover the $500 bill if I gave him the car! Crazy Ridiculous...I of course told him to shove his theiving offer. And now I am about to start the diagnosis myself. Though I have 280,000 miles on the engine....so my question is, do you think it's worth figuring the misfire out at this mileage...or might be just time to get a new engine anyway?
@4WheelKid2 жыл бұрын
Thats crazy, they cant just charge 500 bucks and tell you you need an engine without showing proof of what tests they did, if they did a compression test and that cylinder has bad compression then yeah new engine, if they did a combustion to coolant leak test and found exhaust gas in your coolant than yeah new engine. They cant just say you need a new engine without explaining why.

Put all brand new oem injectors in from the dealer, I know how to get a dealer discount. Dropped the fuel tank, cleaned and installed a new denso fuel pump and sock, replaced the filter as preventative. No issues since then. Had to change my oil like 3 times from the fuel wash. Still runs great, still doesnt burn a drop of oil between oil changes
