1999 VW Passat 1.8t (aeb) this issue was intermittent lacking power hesitation, no faults stored, used data pids to determine a rich condition set by the upstream o2 sensor (fixed at 900mV) causing short term fuel trim to max at -30%, all data pids looked ok except the maf sensor (reading high at idle at times ) so I placed my focus on the maf sensor, this video shows how to check o2 sensor response and maf sensor signal while snapping the throttle, unfortunately I was unable to complete the repair due to cost, hope you enjoy thanks for watching.
