1999 Yamaha R6 brief overview.

Just thought id throw out a short overview of the 1st gen R6's and my thoughts on them for all you riders or soon to be riders that are looking at purchasing one
. all in all i think they're a superb motorbike. and don't be hesitant because of the common issues. I had zero knowledge going into my project. i was able to fix the transmission issues myself, all it took was a willingness to learn and a little commitment.

I absolutely love my 2000 R6! Haven't had any trouble with 2ng gear yet (thankfully) Putting all black fairings, new headlight housing, K&N air filter and looking at new exhaust. Right now I have a two brothers. I like the sound of your exhaust alot.

Cool Vid lets keep the legend alive!! I ride a 2000 with 02 tail conversion, dynojet, k&n filter,( yeah yeah i know but ive got it tuned with no flat spots) two bros chopped exhaust.Over 50k, original 2nd gear and trans with no problem shifting and original engine. IMHO prettiest generarion and yes carbs are maintenance but i love the feel and sound of carbs over FI. Regulator just cut connector and crimp 5 yellow individual stake ons they will fit perfectly and air will run between connection. 100% right on her talking to you. Venturi is unforgiving as where FI will at least try to compensate for mistakes i.e. air or vacuum leaks. Ive owned FI and i plan on Boring the 5eb and rebuilding, upstaging the whole engine. Wish there were more Gen 1 videos. This bike was an evolution in super sports and put Gixxer Bras off the map...Love your R6, she deserves it

Thank you for this informative review. I recently got a 00' R6 with 38000 km's on it. Has a few things that need attention due to neglect. But overall it's pretty mint. Has a FMF slip on. Has the same sound as this one in the video. It's nice and nor obnoxious. I'm falling in love with it more and more. It's not license ready yet. Nor is the weather the greatest. Still winter. But can't wait to start riding it

Still racing about on my zx6r 99 at about 70k miles, engine still runs like a dream despite the abuse. Crazy how long these things can go. Great vid man, I feel you on all sentiments about these old girls, though for some reason mine doesn't feel short on torque, maybe just the handling and braking when compared to the newer bikes.

Yeah, theyre built to last. Its crazy how people think theyre toast after 10k miles. I feel like if you change oil regularly and treat them right then you should easily be able to get 100k out of them. A 99 zx6r is a sick ride though. Those late 90's-early 2000's sportbikes are getting such a classic vibe to them now, i just love it when you see them in their original paint and decals.

Dont let age hold you back! Best time to start riding is now. While the R6 is a fast bike no doubt. It is very docile at low rpm. Just remember that it only goes as fast as you twist the throttle and more importantly, enjoy the ride!

I have a 2001 as a track bike. They are a great bike to learn on because they are cheap and fairly fast. Mine will wheelie when shifting into second at full throttle on the straight despite having been abused for so long. Its biggest shortcoming is its handling, it just doesn't turn in like other supersports. My street bike is an SV650S with a modified suspension and it is much easier to ride aggressively.

So if some one was to try out a r6, which would you recommend, a 99 or a 2003? From what I understand in 2003 they fixed the issues, stiffened up the frame, and updated the suspension.

Personally ive never ridden an 03. But to be honest the 03 might be worth it for the fuel injection amd chassis upgrades. That and to be honest i think they look a bit better as well. Id say if you can snag an 03 for a few extra bucks over a 99 itd be worth it.

I know this is an old post but do you have those issues with the falling out of gear when it is cold and first warming up? I picked one up at auction that had set for five years with no fuel in it I got it running pretty smooth but I notice when I first started and let it warm up at tends to hop in and out of gears but gets better as it warms up I’ve heard this may happen because of the oil viscosity when cold but was just wondering if you had any info on that

No worries. It's possible. The bike i was riding in this video slipped out of gear no matter what engine temp. For me ut really came down to when the transmission had a large load on it. But i can see that being a possibility. A good test would be to change the oil. Id use yamalube (ive had the best luck with yamalube) and see if that changes anything. Hopefully all goes well! Enjoy the ride!

Hi there! Without looking at it, it sounds to me like you might have a low speed jet plugged in your carbs. You can try running products like Seafoam through your gas tabk but more often than not youll have to clean out the carbs. As long as you take your time its not too hard of a job. Good luck! I miss my 5EB R6, mine was red/white. Very quick for an old bike, only thing I hated about R6 is the shit gearboxes, going from 1st to 2nd feels like gearbox falls out... Very common and annoying on these bikes. Not the most reliable, I've also had ZX6R/ZX9R AND CBR600 F3 and in my opinion the CBR is much better built bike then both the Yam and Kwak, Honda reliability is the best, to be fair them 3 bikes ZX6R G/J CBR600F3 (96-98) AND R6 5EB models were all in competition. Ohhh and the GSXR SRAD, had a couple of them, very fun but by far the most uncomfortable out of them all. I found this shape R6 just as comfy as the ZX6R AND CBR

I've been riding since '91 and I think those are better street bikes. In the 80's and '90 sportbikes were designed for the street and track. After the turn of the century, about when FI became common they turned into street legal track bikes. Modern ones make more power but that's because they spin higher. They're more peaky, the powerbands shifted up and they lost that midrange that's good for the street. Riding positions got more aggressive (that '99 R6 has clip one above the yoke) and they've lost all the underseat storage. That's why when the new gen R6 came out in '07 they kept making the old one until '09 and called it the R6S, the S for street. A fuel injected bike will never be as butter smooth as a well tuned carb, especially these bikes with drive by wire throttle. The comment about carbs not being as responsive is incorrect. You just have to tune them like any FI bike. I have an '03 FZ1 and can putt around in a parking lot at 5mph. I found this video because I might be buying a '01 R6 in mint condition for $3000 and was researching. They're great bikes.
