270 degree crank
@flyingphoenix1133 ай бұрын
How odd. At high RPMs, you can hear the harmonic crossover of the 270 degree parallel twin. It goes from sounding like a 2-cylinder to an inline 3-cylinder!
@identiticrisis3 ай бұрын
Good ear! What's happening is the pulses are becoming closer together. Because one pipe is shorter than the other, instead of hearing 270° it moves closer to 240° - i e. like a triple (with a cylinder missing) And you're right that it's harmonics, even with the missing cylinder, there's enough in there so suggest a triple to your ear. Aprilia's 90° V Twins are the same. But Ducati did it first with the 999 and 749. I think it's by design. A triple is known to be the most efficient to drive an exhaust turbine due to the spacing of the pulses. This spacing is also about equal to typical valve timing durations - the length of time valves spend open. A triple is known for its torque without sacrificing top end. Some of that might be to do with the 240 interval / duration synergy giving more torque to spread around. Perhaps Ducati found a similar benefit at the time, although they moved back to equal length afterwards, with the bigger lower-revving 1098. Possibly to focus more on peak power. Ducati's current V4s in Superbike and MotoGP pair 290° twins, and the Superquadro engines swapped the long and short pipes around to similarly but oppositely increase the interval instead of reducing it. It's likely that engine speed and the required resonances / harmonics for tuning has a lot to do with that.

Wow indeed! Thanks for the in depth explanation, it makes sense I guess hahaha. Not sure what I think of the sound yet, maybe something I have to get used to a bit
@YUGEBBQ3 ай бұрын
@@identiticrisis can you describe what the "pulses" are please?
@identiticrisis3 ай бұрын
@@YUGEBBQ they are pressure pulses created when the exhaust valve opens. The combusted gases are still at a high pressure after expansion in the cylinder, having forced the piston down. After the initial pressure pulse comes "blowdown" where the majority of gas is expelled from the cylinder - this is the flow that people typically associate with performance and which is affected by the acoustic conditions in the exhaust. After that the piston returns to top dead centre again and pumps the remaining gases out. At this point scavenging becomes important, in order to completely empty the cylinder of burned gases, and is also mostly acoustically controlled - especially for two strokes. The pulses feed the acoustic resonances with their own harmonics, and these are then further filtered and amplified by the structure of the exhaust system.
@hisride2 ай бұрын
@@identiticrisiswhat do you mean it moves closer to 240? I get that exhaust dynamics changes harmonics, but it will never delay or move a power pulse of one cylinder (out the exhaust) so that they interact at a different degree than they left the chamber at.

Thanks for the upload Buzzy. This new rider style of placing the leg out while coming into a turn is has been played out. It all started back in the early 2000s ( Nicky Haden, Jason Pridmore ) when flat track riders adopted to road racing -vice versa - Road racer adopting supercross for training. With the major being the natural reaction of the human body when going faster than the minds capabilities. This style is not capabilities but more a follow the leader style now. Leg always on the foot peg guys!
