Great video. Question - would it not be actually simpler to actually drop the oil pan?
@TheyCallMeCoolRon5 ай бұрын
This was exactly what I was looking for. The stealership wanted around $1500 ($850 labor and $600 parts) for both sides to include parts and labor, but no alignment in the quote. Parts from 1A Auto and my time, worth every penny.

you an loosen the engine mounts and jack the engine up to get that one bolt out ;)
@StillPlaysWithCars_ Жыл бұрын
Great video. Couple of notes - the bolt that you have to drop the sub frame slightly for, on my RAV, was next to impossible to budge. I had to go to a DIY shop and get it up on a lift to break it loose. Driver side too. Even then it was incredibly hard to get out. Also, the bolt on the knuckles, on my car at least, wouldn't budge. I had to pull the strut out to get at it.

Got the control arm bolt out despite oil pan interference just like shown in this video. Big savings of time; thank you. I have a lot of home mechanic experience, but this was a challenging undertaking, and nothing went well or easy; would recommend only for those up to challenges you will not encounter here. Thanks again.

How did you get that bolt out?
@Skankhunt42vmmfАй бұрын
I was able to do this job following this video! It took me 2 days to do it on the ground. One per side. The driver side is the really hard one. As briefly mentioned around the middle of the video you have to loosen the rear engine mount and slightly jack the transmission pan using a flat and thick piece of wood to then be able to remove that control arm bolt while using the pry bar. A ratchet doesn't fit there otherwise. When reassembling, I had to tight it while on jack stands and it was very hard to find a slim torque wrench above 150 ft/lb rating

Thank you 1A Auto, much appreciated got it done in 10hrs. I enjoy your channel, you guys always name the tools your using, and spec info. Keep at it with sharing education.

Would it be easier by removing the oil pan? I mean, the cost of a gasket is nothing compared to this nightmarish unbolting of the sub frame. This type of repair will be very difficult on “the ground”, with a regular jack and supports…

Is there a torque wrench small enough to fit over that nut at the ball joint for 98 foot pounds?
@JohnSmith-ok9sn3 ай бұрын
Great video. However, a good technician would clean, and(!) chase, each(!) bolt he was reusing. 'Cause, what you'd done was just jamming all that old rust right back into the nuts. And(!), for the high torque required for the castle nut, a GOOD technician would go out of his way to do it right, and not just "eyeball" it!

Thanks so much to Toyota for making a simple fix a complete pain in the A$$!!! Not to mention OEM from Toyota is almost $300!!!!! EACH SIDE IS $300!!!!, NOT BOTH!!! They will bend you over coming, going, and every way in between!!!

I did this job a 2015 corolla its a PIA. The driver side is hard to. I had to pry on the bolt itself with the k member loose to get it out and i jacked up on the tranny pan. It got dented but its fine

I've seen a lot of lug nut specs that have given me problems, wheel comes loose, 76 is no good for me, I always torque Toyota 5 stud lugs to 100 ft-lb, owned a Corolla 17 yrs, never had a problem. Why is the spec 76 ???

just curious. How would you know if the front lower control arm needed to be replace?
@toyotabrony2 жыл бұрын
U change them and or inspect them around 100k miles. When u see the ball joints and the rubber bushing are staring to wear, it would be a good time to replace them before it gets worse.

Why didn’t you loosen the motor mounts a little and jack up the engine?
@mateomorales16532 жыл бұрын
You risk breaking plastic hoses up top. Assuming on a lift it's faster to slightly looses the subframe a bit and slide them out. Knock them out in about an hour for both sides, er, I mean the exact time that Toyota specifies for extended warranties and not a second sooner

These are one of the most basic mechanical thin gf d to do it urself. They are very easy, just more bolts to loose them up, have something to support the frame, and get that lower control arm off. Just need the right set of basic tools, and DIY. Instead of have the shop for u. And pay around $500 bucks a. Which it is faster, but the cost, not worth it. Save u some few hundreds for this.
