Thank you so much .... this video helped immensely. I didn't have a C clamp, so needless to say, I had to use a little old fashioned elbow grease. But once I got the hang of it, the other side was a cinch.

Great video. You help people save big money! I've done this job a 100 times and I was wondering how others do it. Here's a waaaaaaay faster way to slide the caliper piston back in. I use the old brake pad to protect the piston edge then squeeze the piston back in using big lock jaw pliers. Lock jaw pliers are also great to loosen an idioticly overtightened oil filter. Also, rotors usually require a few hammer strikes as they are usually welded on by years of rust. STOP, HAMMER TIME To protect your studs put your nuts back on the studs while doing so as the sweet spot to bang is between the studs. To prevent this loud and unpleasant exercise, put anti-seeze between the new rotor and hub. I love ANTI-SEEZE Readers out there: you NEED Anti-seeze And don't forget to silicone grease those slider pins.

I bought a giant pair of ChannelLocks for this very purpose. I learned this from my mechanic father-in-law. Using the old brake pad to protect the piston edge is a great tip, I haven't been doing that...thanks!

You can put a big flathead screwdriver into the inspection hole and compress the caliper piston that way.

Any and all bolts that are mentioned in the video need be torqued to some degree depending upon where they are located. Awesome, thanks for this great video tutorial! So much better/easier than replacing the rear drums. What parts do you recommend replacing when you install new brakes? Brake pads but also new rotors? How about replacing those rusty calipers?
@1AAuto9 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the condition and how many miles are on the brake rotors. If the rotors are fairly new, and still have enough material on them, you may be able to just put new brake pads on. If the rotors are grooved and starting to get old, you may want to change the pads and rotors together. If the calipers are working fine, despite come rust, you should be able to leave them alone. Here's a link to the brake pads and rotor kits that we carry on our website for Honda Civics www.1aauto.com/honda-civic-brake-pad-and-rotor-kits/mo-c/375-127?KZbin&CTA%20Comment&ATony

When it comes to brakes it is either the OEM ones or the aftermarket ones. There really isn't any brand that is worse than the next. There are only a few manufacturer of brake pads in the world so its a good chance you would be buying the same ones. The only difference in most are what they are made out of.

Since Honda cars are the only ones that have those two screws in the rotor, and other cars do not, why not just leave those troublesome screws out permanently? Afterall, other cars do not have such screws and they do just fine. My understanding is that they were put on at the factory to make assembly of the brake system go smoother by having the rotor secured in place. Would appreciate your insight and commentary.

Thank you very much for the great detailed video. My question to you is at the end you pressed on break paddle a few times, could you explain why you did that please? I just started working on my Civic 2004 EX by myself since dealers are ripping me off when I go to them. Actually I taught my daughter how do do the oil change, replace cylinder head cap by removing the EGR etc. So, I will be teaching her the replacing the break pads, radiator, condenser etc. Therefore I greatly appreciate if you could let me know how to determine whether the rotors are good or bad, please?
@1AAuto8 жыл бұрын
You can check the brake pads by looking at the depth of the friction material. The pads will usually have some sort of indicator to tell you what the depth should be. For example, there might be a couple of tabs or bolts. When the friction material is level with the tabs, it's time to replace the pads. You can check if the rotors are bad by feeling for deep grooves with the back of your fingernail. If you feel deep grooves, then it's time to replace the rotors. You pump the brake pedal after a brake job to make sure the pressure in the lines is set right. Just pump the pedal until it feels form. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393

There should be a slot at the back of the caliper. You can use a 2x4 or a piece of wood thick enough, or really anything that will fit over the piston and is thick enough to gain leverage without damaging anything, and put it between the caliper and the piston (where the brake pads and rotor usually go) and then use a small pry bar or a large screwdriver through the slot to pry the 2x4 toward the piston. Similar to what is being shown here, only using the 2x4 as leverage instead of the rotor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmWren2gaqybjqs Then, you'll want to get the caliper put back on the vehicle pretty quickly as it will slowly expand back outward.

If you do not have a C- Clamp like the one shown, you can also use a set of Vise Grip clamp if you have one big enough to go between the caliper and brake pad. Or with the caliper and old pads and rotor still on the car one the bolts are out of the caliper, you can put a flat head screwdriver between the old rotor and brake pad and collapse it in that way. We carry the brake pads and rotors shown in this video on our website. Here's a link to them goo.gl/mk6Zbv

The rotor retaining screws do not have to be taken out in order to remove and replace brake pads on this vehicle. This video technician is telling you things that do no need to do just to replace the brake pads. Also in this video, he uses anti-seize paste on the brake pads and screws. You can use this compound for the screws, but DO NOT use the compound for brake pads. An anti-squeal (not anti seize) lubrication is used for the brake pads and the metal clasps you see the technician brushing the dust off of.in this video. When compressing the caliper piston, an easier way to do this is to use the C-Clap and an old brake pad. Put the metal part of the brake pad flat against the open part of the caliper and then turn the C-clamp to push in the pistons. Now if you were removing the rotors then you would have to remove the caliper bracket and the rotor retaining screws as he shows in the video. I am a senior master technician who has 35 years of experience working on automobiles.
