Is the noise issue mostly only in the rear due to the rust on the hardware? Did a brake job and still hear a noise.

With my caliper, and rotor disc then I always make sure to clean thoroughly behind disc and rotor. Making sure there is also rust primer on calipers, after l use copper wire brush for sanding them down with eye shield and mask on. It is a tough job, but respraying coats on caliper with primer anti rust agent and blue UHD colour really make caliper long last against the wear and tear coming from old to highly dangerous brake dust when scraping off. If you in doubt, and feel you cant change pads due to worry that you can't get them on then never change you pads, only get that done through service. If you want to do it you self, but in doubt of buying through private car part sales places after measuring pads then always order from dealership genuine parts. Never order aftermarket parts, Brembo is another issue we face as many people order Brembo brake parts and experience good to bad faults. Biggest of all is incorrect alignment, and often occur through ordering new pins that are too short or to big in size. Ionised water is just quick tip on cleaning the rust off before priming, spraying and painting to lubing back on.

As a service advisor for a Mazda dealership in california, this is only semi accurate. Recalls fix the DLR and Liftgate damper. As for the windshield, parking brake, and uneven wear of brakes, I've yet to see it. I personally oversee thousands and thousands of repairs to Mazdas (a large percentage of which are this era, but the cx5 is definitely very popular) over the course of a even just a year, which tells me if these are a "common" issue, its relatively non existent based on stats. All in all in my experience, these are great commuter cars and very reliable

I've had the 1st gen CX-5 since 2013: 1- I got the standard with no day time running lights 2- Never had this windshield problem 3- Never had the liftgate problem 4- I remember only changing my breaks literally once only because they were squeeking 5- I have a crank break :) Actual problem I had: 1- I had damaged the front radiator for the A/C (I think a stone hit it or something) which cause the compressor to fail due because there was no A/C gas(Feron) 2- The mass airflow sensor failed which cause some weird issues and random car turnoff, replacing it was the fix 3- There is a switch inside the gear changer that detects when you are in P. Now I need to push the gear lever towards the P because it wont get detected properly and allow the car to turn off, Its a cheap part you need to replace. I think that's all the problems I had. I have 195000 Kilometers on it

I'm surprised you didn't mention the front door speaker failure. Mazda did not seal the speakers from the moisture that the windows bring in when they are rolled down, so the glue holding the speaker cone to the speaker frame eventually disintegrates. Actually kind of an easy fix if you're ok taking the door panel off and applying proper speaker glue to the edges of the cone. But the speakers will rattle like crazy with any amount of bass if you don't apply this fix, and too much glue while applying the fix can also make the speakers too dull or prevent them from calibrating with Bose's on-the-fly equalization. I did one speaker a year or so ago and the second one started rattling recently so I'll be fixing that soon.

My 2013 Sport AWD with 101,000 miles has been freakin awesome. Bought it with 15,000 miles on it. Only issues have been a bad parking switch sensor and the serpentine belt broke. Both fixed myself. I have upgraded the exhaust (Corksport), added roof rails and a roof basket, aftermarket headlights, aftermarket suspension, front sway bar, some bad ass breaks and new wheels with offroad tires. It's underpowered but I love the gas mileage. Its so reliable driving through snow I cannot believe it sometimes. I've driven through 3' of snow in blizzards here in Colorado and no problem. I have a 2016 model CX5, only problem I had is the torn bushing in the front control arms...it got damaged due to the poor road condition here in Toronto. Huge pot holes. Overall, this car is solid. I would say they are very close to Toyota standards when it comes to reliability, gas efficiency and performance. Its fast enough with good power so I dont get bullied in the highway too. You don’t have to replace the rotors just because you’re replacing the pads. Pads are disposable items, rotors aren’t. You can machine them if uneven but otherwise leave them alone until they become too thin.

There are two major issues hitting the early CX-5 1st Generations with a 2.0L: 1) Exhaust manifold failure. Mazda welded about 8" of exhaust PIPE to the end of the manifold and welded the first hanger here. It is through that weld these are rotting through. Repairing this requires replacement of the exhaust manifold (an $1800 part IF you can find one) and a very long repair (drop the engine), 2) The power steering motor failing. A part that runs $1400, very hard to obtain and is a very long, involved repair. I love my CX-5s (I have 3: 2013, 2015, 2018 as well as a CX-30), but the parts pricing is ridiculous (with no aftermarket solutions)

This video covers things that are not part of my 2013 CX-5 Touring. It does not have LED daytime running lights or electronic parking brakes. The lift gate pistons were a recall replacement. The rear brakes wore normally until they needed replaced at 93K miles. The windshield did not have that cracking problem before it was replaced due to a golf ball sized piece of Michigan road salt. At 248K+ miles, it is still a great car. Fixed the door speaker issue myself. The HID headlights were a $1K repair after continuous ON over 200K miles.

I have 2014 cx5. In northern latitudes with lots of snow rust will begin to form around fuel pump on the fuel tank. This causes the gasoline vapor to escape into the cabin or around the rear of the vehicle. Mazda tech says it’s an issue with first ten cx5s but currently no recalls to fix the issue. Cost to fix is 3k. FYI

Current CX-5 owner. Did not experience any of these issues. However, earlier 2013-14 models like mine had also: 1. Hood vibration issue. Not dangerous or a real problem, but very visible for the driver. Fixed after the cowl was replaced. 2. Driver side mirror excessive vibrations, especially with wind. Mostly fixed in mine, still a little bit of vibration left There were some limited reports of issues with the automatic transmission, also in 15 and maybe 16 model years: 1. Whine which could deteriorate into an actual mechanical breakdown and full replacement 2. "Christmas tree" light-up of all indicators in the car and the transmission going into limp mode Still, overall fairly reliable vehicle

I'm surprised the A/C Blower problem did not make the list. I had to change mine twice in less than 5 years on my 2016. The problem starts with the blower making noise for a few months, then just quits working all together. So basically you will need a new blower every 2.5 years. The first time this happened, I searched on the net and found that it was common problem on this generation. The Mazda 3 also has the same problem since it uses the same blower. The CX5 2017+ uses a different blower, so hopefully this is not a problem on those models. Other than the blower, the car is great and I would by another one (Newer generation) again.

2016 AWD automatic with 2.2 diesel: very reliable up to about 80k miles, then 1) transmission started to change down at too high a road speed while descending hills on engine over-run, and when it did so, lots of warning lights came on all at once, and braking and gear changes became very rough and jerky. Everything re-set to normal when you turned off the engine, and re-started. Happened more and more frequently. Cure (so far): gear change module software re-installed. 2) windscreen wipers suddenly died (front only). The fuse was OK, and fault diagnosed by Mazda as front body control module, and by local motor engineer (as opposed to parts fitter) as a relay sticking within the FBCM. This was a dealer recall issue on the Mazda 3, but not on the CX-5, though they have since fitted different relays, or so I'm told. Mazda main agent claimed to know nothing about the fault on the CX-5, but knew far too much about the symptoms without being told, so I don't believe them. No FBCM in the UK at the time of asking, and no idea what delivery time might be. Cure (so far): when the wipers stop working, open the bonnet, get out, open the fuse box, and give the FBCM a series of sharp taps with your knuckle until the relay unsticks. 3) engine warning light came on and car went into limp-home mode. Fault reader indicated excessive engine oil temperature and other issues. Oil and filter change (not overdue by any means) didn't cure it for long, and it came back a couple of months later. Cure (so far): drop sump, replace oil pickup strainer which was clogged with carbon, also replace assorted gaskets, pipework &c. Anecdotally, these engines appear to be very, very intolerant of short journeys, and I've been told that they need motorway / dual carriageway blasts of 20 minutes above 2000 rpm at least weekly to prevent fouling. I have been advised (by a former service training manager for a major manufacturer) to add Forté oil flush or similar a month or so before scheduled oil changes.

I have a 2016 CX-5 Touring that I bought new. It's by far the best car I've ever owned. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with it in almost 6 years. All I've done is oil changes and tire rotations every 5k miles. Also replaced the factory battery at about 5 years. As for what was listed in this video: 1) My touring luckily didn't come with LED headlights. 2) My windshield has never cracked. I've heard its mostly a problem occuring on the GT's because the electronic sensor is pressing against the top middle of the windshield causing stress. 3) My liftgage pistons never had a problem. However they did get replaced free under a Mazda recall. 4) Haven't had any brake problems yet. Still on the originals. 5) Haven't had any problems with the electronic parking break.

In europe the biggest problem is the EGR & DPF in the 2.2 Diesel. If you remove them and decarbonise the engine then you have a great vehicle.

Have a 2015 CX-5, at about 80K miles (manual parking brake lever) I heard a noise when getting off the highway. Stopped and felt all rims and the right rear was much hotter. Had calipers locked up due to corrosion and had the rear two replaced. I took off the front pads and cleaned them up and made sure the the contacts and pins were well lubricated so it didn't happen in the front. No other problems so far except I am surprised how much rust is underneath and on the engine bolts.

Let me add one problem on the Mazda CX 5. I have a 2014 CX 5 GT, everytime I parked the car on the different ground level and all doors aren't easy to open or to shut. It looks that the shell isn't rigid enough to hold the car when park the different ground level. Overall it's a good and excellent car.

The biggest issue for this vehicle (I have a 2013 Touring AWD) is the engine going into "limp mode". I just changed out the spark plugs and now it's even worse. I'm going to try replacing the ignition coils next. Praying that works. This serious problem is all over Mazda blogs/discussion threads. I'm praying that I don't have to replace the PCM. You'll be driving, and with no warning, the engine light comes on and you stop accelerating. I could keep the car up to 40 mh as long as I pressed down on the gas, but as soon as I let up, the car slowed down and stopped. I could rev the engine in Park, but when put in Drive, it happened again. Other warning lights that come on at the same time are the TPS OFF, Master Warning, and Tire Warning. No recall for this problem, of course. 🙄

In the uk I own a 2014 cx5 and so far none of these problems have occurred. The only issue was at less than 4years old and 35000 miles the heater failed to warm up. A new unit at the cost of 700£ was fitted and apparently this was a common fault in this country. Mazda have not seen fit to assist in any way with the cost of this but have upgraded the heating unit on later models so are aware of the problem.

We bought a 2014 CX5 new and our windshield actually cracked on the bottom. I eventually stopped and I haven't replaced it yet. Liftgate pistons were recalled so they replaced them. And I'm actually replacing the front and rear pad and rotors now. 57k miles on the car, easy driving, very good car. The only electrical issue I've had was the break switch, under the pedal, that interloks with the push button start had stuck. Easy replacement and it was an 11 dollar part.

You stated that the rear brakes tend to wear out fairly quick. And so obviously the pads need to be replaced. But then you also said that if you change the pads, to change the rotors too......why? I've had quite a few cars in my lifetime and have found that my rear rotors will typically last close to, or beyond 100,000 miles. If the CX-5 pads wear out "early", say at 40,000 miles, why would I change the rotors?

Unfortunately, I can not say the same for Mazda reliability. Based on all the information that I could find at the time, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 seems like a winner in the area of performance, style and dependability, so I purchased one. Outside of a stiff ride, blind spots, and the uncomfortable seats, I was good with the car (until I hit the 74k mark). For those who don’t know, there is a service bulletin on 2014-2016 CX-5 regarding defective transaxle units. In a certain serial number range (most of them) the casing of the trans was improperly machined which leaves a critical bearing misaligned. This misalignment causes the bearing to prematurely wear and fail in approximately 70-90k miles. Mine was one of those affected by this issue. Luckily, I still had 3 months left to the power train warranty otherwise I would be paying for the manufacturers incompetence (approx $5k). I am still waiting on the back ordered new unit, but will probably sell it the vehicle the moment the repair is complete. Not impressed!

Correct. The problem is the differential assembly. I went down under my car while changing a snapped coil spring and saw my differential casing with cracks. Like metal cracks, no leaks yet so im good but im like wtf why would a very big metal bulb have cracks. This supposed to outlast any part of the car and yeah when i saw the tsb. Im like wtf man. Also i checked the part, its $1200 American dollars brandnew, so perhaps $2000 all in all with labor. I checked for used parts and a pre owned costs $1000 canadian. I bought my 2015 used and yeah this is will be out of pocket, im out of the 60,000 warranty or 5 year whichever comes first as im on the 80,000 mileague now.

So I had a 2005 Mazda 6 that I am the second owner of. Had 216,000 miles on it when I traded it in yesterday. Picked out a 2013 CX-5 which I have been wanting for a while. So far I love it except I noticed as soon as I pulled into the highway after picking it up, the digital speedometer and the actual speedometer are not syncing up. The digital speedometer is totally off and out of whack so I'm curious if there any suggestions on what might be causing this? I love Mazdas so would hate to give the vehicle back if it's a simple fix. Hoping the dealership will just take care of it as they should have before it was ever sold.
