The most underrated feature of the CX5 (that is never mentioned in any reviews, including this one), and the reason I bought one, is the 40/20/40 split rear seats. For surfers (or Skiers/snowboarders) with kids, this feature alone is game changing. The CX5 can fit all our boards straight down the middle, with a kid (car seats and all) either side. I have no idea why this in not standard in every car, I'd never buy another car without it. Most of the Euro's and Lexus have it (for Skiers I suppose). The CX5 has been brilliant.

Interesting to hear mechanic comments regarding the diesel. In use though, it's a much better performing engine. There are a couple of interesting points about the engine, and caveats. The caveat is that this engine does need to be warmed like no other (reasons below). And unless well maintained, driven on the highway often to clear particulates, and serviced regularly (particularly oil change), this engine can spit the dummy at you if not loved. And I suspect it's this lack of caring for and maintaining that turns them against their owners. Here is the interesting bit though..... The Skyactiv-D is unique among diesels. It was borne out of decades of university papers regarding the benefits of low compression diesel in reducing CO2 emissions. Unfortunately no car manufacturer wanted to touch low compression because it had one major flaw: "cold starts are difficult when you go below 16:1". Typically diesel engines are 18:1 to 16:1 compression. It's the lowest that any manufacturer has gone. The lower you go, the more potential for incomplete combustion and difficulty in cold starts. But the other thing that improves from 18:1 to 16:1 to 14:1 is NVH. The higher the compression, the more like a tractor you're going to sound. 14:1 is far less agricultural. Mazda was the first, and is still the only manufacturer to have gone to 14:1. This led to significantly lower emissions, but the party trick that Mazda used to fix cold starts was exhaust recirculation on start up. In practice this means that if you put a VW Tiguan next to a CX-5 of the same era on a cold morning, the CX-5 will sound louder on start up, but when warm, it's the VW (due to 16:1) that sounds the more tractor like. I think Kudos needs to be give to Mazda for trying something different. This extends to making their petrol (in Europe/Japan at least, also 14:1 (high for petrol), and looking at their SPCCI engine (a good attempt at the holy grail that is HCCI). Further Kudos need to be given for honesty. In 2012 when this engine was released, the goal was to do all the hard work to get the engine to pass US EPA, which is extremely strict. They refused to export the car until it genuinely met emissions. (US EPA > Euro VI > Euro V). Meanwhile we know what VW was doing. Cheating in order to meet emissions. After VW dieselgate, both the German and Japanese governments did audits on all diesel engines manufactures in the country to determine which car makes were telling the truth, and which were lying. After the audit, Germany refused to publish. But it's well known in the automotive industry the reason for this was that all of their diesel engines were employing similar tricks to VW to pass emission standards. Japan though, honourably published all the results. A simple outline was published on this www.forbes.com/sites/bertelschmitt/2016/03/05/japan-releases-nasty-diesel-test-results-germany-sits-on-them/ It went on to write history in a good way for Mazda. Quote: "Mazda’s new Scyactiv diesel-powered CX5 and Demio (exported as the Mazda2) tested at or near the standard." It turns out that Mazda, in being honest and finally getting Skyactiv-D to pass US EPA (took 5 years of detuning - which to be honest, made the good engine suck), showed their intention for honesty. When the Japanese government published the results, they stated that among all diesel engines, the Skyactiv-D was the only engine to pass their test. Effectively it was the only car maker making honest claims. Diesel might be going out of fashion now, but it's still good to see Mazda went all Japanese geek engineering style after Ford left (2010 due to One Ford divest), and the Skyactiv-D was an example of thinking outside the box.

Cx5s are quite common in Kenya. We get them at 7yrs or less since they have started being used. Usually less than 100k Kms. The diesel was initially a big problem but these days the mechs discovered the junction pipe was plastic which would often melt therefore leading to overheating of the engine. They replace it with a metal one and other pple do a dpf delete. The car ends up being good with no issues as much. Maybe other people can pick it up

Great video, but there were some incorrect information in the reliability section of this video. The gasoline engines are actually NOT atkinson or otto cycle engines. They are miller cycle engines. This, plus several other fuel efficiency and complete ignition technologies (Like the 4-2-1 Exhaust manifold (Take a look behind the engine, they are massive) and dome-shaped pistons with a cavitiy (Used to Reduce Pre-Ignition) are what give it its "SkyActive "Name. It isn't something the average joe should care about, but that is what the name means, since that's what allows the really high compression ratio for a NA engine at 13.0:1. Also, there were some common issues that was left out, that is usually more commonly found on the SkyActive-G engines. 1. Timing Cover Leak. These arent the end of the world, since its usually minor, but can be time consuming to replace. Check the left side of the engine where the alternator sits before you buy. 2. Serpentine Belt Tensioner. This part on like to go out, and will have oil all over it. The car will still run, but it can cause the belt to prematurely wear out. Mazda has made a revised part with a better rubber seal if you do need to replace it. 3. Park Position Sensor. The sensor that tells the car its in park has a rubber nub that tends to wear out, preventing it from working. If your car occasionally wont turn off and only goes into accessory mode, that's why. This part again, has been revised if you ever need to replace it, and can easily be done by most people with a screwdriver under 1hr. These are the three most common issues, with the plastic valve cover having some sweat into the spark plug cavities probably taking the next issue, but again not a major leak and not as common. Easy to check by removing the coils and inspecting the hole with a light. These are all minor and will still keep the car running, but something to note to have checked/replaced before you buy.

The main problem of the turbo diesel is the camshaft of the 2012 - 2014 which effects the oil pump, turbo and EGR in many cases where you had the full package for the services Mazda fixed the problem for free and upgraded it but if you visit a random repair shop they will replace everything without fixing the main problem which is the camshaft. My cx5 is 12 years old producing 270 HP /620NM and still running like a new . The cx5 is most practical car I have ever driven , It's simple enough so I can replace and repair almost everything myself and the quality is not bad at all . People who drive only in low speeds and rpm will probably never face this problem so be careful when you buy a used one or make sure that the camshaft is upgraded.

Yes, wagons are cooler, and front wheel drive wagons are especially cool due to the small apartment levels of rear interior space available. Why aren't manufacturers making more wagons instead of SUV's? That said though, I know a couple of people that have had or do have CX 5's. They sing high praises of them. One was a company car with huge mileage and it hadn't had a single thing go wrong with it. The other one is owned by a gigging muso. Not only does he do big miles, he does them fully loaded. The CX5 doesn't compare to the 6 for space, but they're a bit of a Tardis just the same. He manages to get his bass bin and head in the back, a couple of bass guitars and still have room left over. And he loves the way that it drives. Another great review. Thanks for the content.

I just bought a 2016 with around 65k miles two years ago, i havent had to replace anything other than pads (and rotors, it dodnt need them but i figured why not, the calipers are already off), its reasonably fun to drive in sport mode, the speakers are great, its comfortable, and the fuel efficiency has surprised me I dont think ive ever had such a stress free first couple years of ownership, and honestly ill probably stick to mazda after this because of that.

Thanks for this video. I have had a diesel cx5 for just over 3months and just took it on a trip of about 900kms and got back a short while back. I have not had an issue or anything show up and I knew the previous owner who had it for 2 years and he had no issues. I would say buy as a user but keep the service intact and right

Very happy with our 2016 CX-5. But not a fan of the electric hand brake. We've had one go, and can't drive it. Had a brake sensor go which played tricks on other electric stuff. Other than that, we like them.

This is one review that I'll definitely be trying to show someone I know as they're seriously looking at one of these possibly even it's big brother. The amount of space you have in with the rear seats is quite surprising to say the least. Have to admit the safety features overview would've left me frustrated if you hadn't put the climax of those films at the end lol. Brilliant work guys as always and as per usual guys keep up the good work and look forward to next week's videos 👍.

Other than the boat anchor of a 2.2 diesel, theyre a lovely thing to drive and generally well made. My dads 2015 cx5 blew the head gasket at about 120k km. Mazda deemed it a write off and quoted over 10,000 euro for a new engine to be fitted. We just threw a bottle of steel seal into the coolant and drove it very handy. Still going for now but how much longer we dont know. That same engine has had the turbos replaced which mazda covered at the time, injector seals which i did, and a lot of oil changes because for some reason this engine likes to dump diesel into the sump. Thought the injector seals would cure it but made absolutely zero difference. A work colleague of mine has the 2 liter petrol version and has had no problems so far. Similar mileage to my dads one

The early (2012 onwards) CX5s, Mazda 6's 2.2diesel's , had several problems ( rocker replacement, exhaust cam replacement, vacuum booster replacement, exhaust pressure sensor replacement, cavitated injectors, dpf issues ) If your not mechanically inclined, you will go broke from the repairs.

Thanks again Adam & Jim - I’ve owned many Subarus but wouldn’t touch a post 2013 Subaru with a barge pole thanks to the flawed CVT and factory oil leaks etc - recently I spent time with friends in and around Newcastle visiting from interstate - I was taken around in my friend’s new CX5 petrol turbo variant and Mazda smartly decided not to use the flawed CVT but instead have a conventional auto transmission - I was very impressed with the journey and fuel economy - sorry Subaru but you’re off my list forever.

The most annoying thing I've ran into with my 2016 is the Bose speakers falling apart in the doors. The glue they used to hold them together is a known failure point and part of the speaker will come free and rattle like crazy. You can fix them, but its a pain and Mazda wants too much money to replace them. Other than that, normal wear and tear like any other car. No CVT and Sport mode still have this as a fun CUV to drive.

Pretty fun on the corners, Obviously not the most powerful thing on the road(which I had to get used too lol) But economic asf and I would take that any-day for those daily commutes. Had mine for 2 years so far. Fantastic cars. only gripe is the road noise(minor), but thats probably coz of my 20 inch tyres lol. But luckily I have good radio system to drown it out. haha

Just based on a family example, the transmission on a 2.5L example is starting to fail at around 150,000kms, despite being regularly serviced at a Mazda dealership. 'Filled for life' is nonsense, replace the transmission fluid every 80-100,000km like any normal car.
@laurence21926 ай бұрын

Funny enough, they actually have a dipstick under the air box. (most cars past 2000 done have any), so its funny they say that since its easier to service the transmission than most cars of its age.

@georgekallely71036 ай бұрын
@@mrgarrison3516 Well your gonna find examples of failure no matter where you go. You'll also find examples of people saying they've had no issues with cars that are known to be unreliable. It's luck really. But no, these are generally simple and reliable transmissions.

Also, Just wondering. Isn't the variant your driving the 1st generation, post facelift? The Picture you showed had the pre (2012-2014) and post (2014-2017) facelift, but both were gen 1 Mazda CX-5s. After 2017 was the 2nd gen CX5 (KF). The version you were driving did have the revised steering and noise insulation. As the 2012-2014 had no noise deadning material in the doors or trunk hatch to save on weight. Most of it was on the bottom of the car, and it let the car to have more road noise and feel a bit cheaper than you'd want to. In the facelist, they added noise insulation in the places I mentioned. Knock on the doors or the pre and post and you'll see the difference. Alot of the issues with the pre facelist were issues due to chasing high fuel economy numbers, like the small 2.0 engine, no noise deadning, thin glass. Most of which were addressed in the post facelift. That said, we own a pre facelift with 180,000kms and its been great! Just wish I had the 2.5 from the 2014+ models

@michaeljablonowski50145 ай бұрын
@@sebastienpierre8292Well i have 200k kilometers and no problems so far. what i mean... you can see when the regeneration process begins in lets say 3 Litres more fuel use on 100km. Just looking at the current fuel use screen. It takes like 10 km driving above 50 kmh and having the engine between 2000 and 3000 rpm. So when i see that the regeneration process begins i dont use the car normaly... many stop and gos in city traffic for example ... i drive on highway and wait till the regeneration process comes to an end. If you abort the process too often the DPF will get cloaked and the DFP light comes on. Never had it one time lighten up in 200.000km.
