THANK YOU CRISTIAN!!!!! For this knowledge man, I just purchased a 99 tacoma and plan on doing all the work myself not only because I'M A MAN WHO CAN WORK ON HIS CAR but I am also working on getting my ASE'S because as a young man who inspires to be a mechanic it helps a lot to have them. I 100% plan on ordering all my parts from 1A AUTO!!!! AGAIN THANKS!

Very cool video I have a 02 Tacoma 2 door super basic truck, just went over 300K I love it. The ball joint did break when I was driving slow on a dirt road so no crash but I replaced both sides. The strangest hassle has been the manual window regulator driving side I have replaced it 3 times & the latest one is broken now... no shop can explain why they fail regularly & I can't do the work myself

The only major issue my '96 ever had was the ball joints. The driver's side ball joint failed first as I was leaving work, just pulling into the intersection at a light change. Destroyed the radiator driving it off the road, I thought the tire had just blown. I had both ball joints replaced (and the radiator, obviously). Some 4 months later, the same ball joint broke, but I was doing 55 at the time. It hit the pavement hard. The broken ball joint was deemed defective, so it was a warrantied replacement -- but they didn't replace the other one of the pair, which struck me as a bad thing. And sure enough, another few months down the road, that passenger ball joint failed at about 45 mph. This time I had both upper and lower ball joints replaced, had the truck lifted back to its normal height (~4 inches up; it had been lowered before I bought it). Unfortunately, hitting the ground at speed had damaged the frame, so it just ate front tires after that. Sadly, a cracked radiator (and my slow realization of the problem) killed the engine this spring. Due to the frame damage, I'm not replacing the engine. It had 370K on it, with only that one serious issue in 28 years, so well worth owning. I miss it a lot.

Usually you can just replace the starter contacts, you don't need a new starter or solenoid. My mechanic has replaced the starter contacts twice. Still original starter and solenoid on 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup with 261,600+ miles on it. Only takes 15 minutes to change them. $25 labor and $15 in parts sure beats buying a solenoid or starter😊

Starter Solenoids are cheap and easy to replace before you buy a new starter. Getting the starter out can be tricky.

Problem number 6. Almost no videos show how to work on the base model. Only the V6 and pre runner

If your AC isn't working then change out the temp door blend solenoid. I have an 04 Tacoma, 2.4l, that had this problem. Also, there is an air-flow thingy below the throttle body that gets gummed up. You'll know when this gets stuck open because the RPMs go up and won't go down. I've got 300k on my Tacoma and the only major problem that I've had is the clutch plate getting worn out. The few other issues I've had were easy DIY fixes.

I've got a Tacoma, '04, and the driver side mirror adjustment is so loose that the glass moves in high winds, when I close the door and on bumps. I can't find any videos that explain how to tighten the adjustment, I can only find videos showing how to replace the whole mirror. Is that what I'd have to do?

What about the temp sensor on the back of the rear part of the head?

There was a recall on those lower ball joints so get Toyota ones. For my 2003 Tacoma at 216K I have low compression on cylinder #2. Might have to replace the valve cylinder head. That can be number #6 on the list. Starter, mass air flow, temp sensor all still good.

I may be wrong but, it's my understanding the lower ball joint is an issue only between '01-'04 models

I had the click click death on my starter, 99 Prerunner. Pull the starter and get a solenoid repair kit (Amazon). The copper disk will wear out, Hint, pull the exhaust pipe, school of hard knocks

My dad has a 1996 Toyota Tacoma four-cylinder this morning is started up fine but it would not shift into drive so he turned it off change the amp in the column so that it would shift again which was a 7.5 amp now it shifts, but the truck won’t start up good grief What could be the issue? Do you think another amp has blown somewhere? We put a new starter in at two or three weeks ago even changed out the spark plug wires and put new spark plugs in we also recently replaced the water pump and the fan blower and thermostat so I’m not sure what’s up.
