'96 will always be the best, gives all the characters a brief moment in the spotlight, and that shot of Leona unsheathing her knife is hype as fuck. Music is great too.

Aside from having a greater stable of superior technical fighters (i.e. KOF 98, FFS, RBFF, SS2, LB2), SNK was way, way ahead of Capcom in terms of characterization. Its characters had tons of depth, manifested through exceptional story modes, exceptional backstories, exceptional spritework (in terms of animation), and exceptional evolution (in terms of both design and fighting style). In particular, because of the spritework, it was exceptionally easy to figure out which characters had history with whom, as well as what the nature of that history was. The same is true for the customized quotations SNK gave its characters, which were far more meaningful than the oft-generic ones that Capcom used. It's true that SNK had less classic designs for its fighting characters than Capcom, but that may have enabled them to take greater risks with changing the design of the characters. Simply put, unlike with Capcom, the design did not play nearly as strong a role in informing about the character. That meant that SNK characters were less likely to come across as caricatures. Because SNK put so much effort into each individual character, each character was interesting enough and had enough depth to have fully-fleshed stories based entirely upon him/her. The same could not be said of Capcom who had many, many dependent characters that could never stand alone. Street Fighter II and the Alpha series are good examples in that they were held together almost entirely by Bison and Akuma. If not for the existence of those characters, many of the cast would have nothing holding them to their respective series at all. In contrast to the KOF series, characters had multiple relationships with other characters such that the absence of one didn't result in an absence of motivation for the others. SNK characters even had complete profiles and their design, quotes, animations, story modes and even their official artwork all reference details such as favorite hobbies, favorite colors, favorite foods, and so on. Terry repeated the adoption theme that had been present throughout the Fatal Fury saga. King went through a long and subtle character evolution from awkward masculinity to a graceful femininity. Blue Mary even got her own music video (who does that)! And Geese Howard was (and still is) probably the most fully-realized villain in a fighting game ever. In every way. From backstory right down to his official artwork by Shinkiro. SNK fighters are clearly more than just fighting games and that's what has made them so timeless. They are full of humorous details and references that make it obvious that they were made with love. Yes, in terms of characterization, SNK was far, far ahead of it's time compared to Capcom. Fact is, the company created better fighters _and_ better characters.

Joseph Kerr Exactly, that's what I've always felt which is why I loved SNK fighters a bit more growing up. One of the designers had even stated that they wanted the characters to seem as if they really exist. That's how they basically viewed and treated their characters. I'm helping some people design 3 beat-em-up games, and a straight up fighter, and we're treating our characters the very same way- along with everything that we loved (which has inspired us greatly) from the fighters of the 90's.. Except crap like Pit Fighter, and yes Mortal Kombat (never got into that sorry, never got into western games really back then in general lol).

omg ikr, imo KOF in general even feels like a more realisitc mix of DragonBall itself and OnePiece itself - while also using the Orochi japanese real life legend or mythos -.... each arc resolves in a Tenkaichi like tournament - except with plenty more chars in teams - like in DB, and it has arguably the same kind of interaction between chars, backhisories and personal development like in OP...... it's also intersting how Iori would be the " Vegeta " while there's like 2 main " Gokus " and even them won't get all the spotlight with each new season

My favourite KOF game is KOF EX Neoblood. It's mainly because it's the only one I own, but I really like it as well because it has excellent gameplay, a brilliant roster of characters and I really love that if you play as Kyo or have Kyo in your team (Kyo is my favourite character) your team fight Lori Yagami who is a worthy adversary if I do say so myself. I also like it because it's just an all-around epic fighting game on the Game Boy Advance.

What the hell happened at SNK in 2001? The opening is devoid of any charm or quality. Art style is amateur and frankly unlikable, production is obviously on budget and music is as generic as they come.
