At the end of Tokyo ghoul, Kaneki already made this mistake when the antique was assaulted. He could have just run away with Toka after being offered the chance. Instead he went into a suicidal rescue mission, got himself captured and tortured.

The sudden panel switch between Kaneki getting ready to fight to him completely destroyed on the ground was so, so, SO good. It really hits, HARD. There are so many moments that refreshed my love for the manga each time, but THAT one was the highest peak in pure subversion. And I have NEVER seen something quite like that in any other series so far. Also, the opening monologue grows even heavier in meaning when you read the mangaka's thoughts after the manga was finished; he went through a really rough patch of depression, burn-out, and anxiety due to the series, making those dialogues all the more real and personal.
@nonope1715
@nonope1715 Ай бұрын
As in within panel transition? Because the trope isn t super rare… plenty of times it’s used to make a villain seem strong when the author didn’t want to reveal what they can do, though that’s usually with a cutaway and we come back to one of them on the ground. Some recent examples that spring to mind: gojo vs sukuna (after victory is declared we come back next issue….) Askin vs ichigo (manga, anime brought the memory up lol) - ichigo arrives ready to kick some ass and save the day, we cut to another battle and when we come back he’s face down doing his best chad impression.
@KyzenEX
@KyzenEX Ай бұрын
@nonope1715 Oh yeah, I read the Gojo vs Sukuna fight... Honestly, my mind just decided to erase as much of JJK as possible after the ending. The thing is, even if it is a trope, there's a clear difference of intention. I haven't read the Bleach manga so I'll stick to JJK and TG. In JJK, you know Gege had written himself into a corner, with basically no logical way of making Sukuna the winner after pulling so many Deus Ex Machinas for him. Gege made Gojo too OP, even for all the sudden abiltiies he was giving Sukuna, and this is especially noticeable because there's no "recap" of what went wrong; we just see Gojo about to win, bam, next chapter (iirc) he's dead, and we move on to the fallback plan without much rumination. It feels like a cop out; we all knew Gojo was gonna lose the fight, but Gege was utterly unable to make it believable, so he skipped the middle steps and showed the results directly without leaving much room for thought or logic. As per Kaneki vs Suzuya and the other guy, we know the fight's gonna be a close one, and we intrinsically know Kaneki should win (he's the protagonist and the story is far from over), but we've also seen him lose time and time again, which creates expectations. This is a fight we've all been waiting for, it's about to begin (unlike Gojo vs Sukuna, which we saw everything of but the end), and we skip it, to the panel of Kaneki completely washed. The thing is; the intention is not to look for a cop out like Gege did; Sui-sensei didn't write himself into a corner like Gege did, he wanted us to feel the same rug-pull Kaneki felt, and we had incredible writing after that; Kichimura's whole monologue, and the conversations amongst the many Kanekis, which led to the Dragon Kaneki arc. It's not just about the trope, it's about the execution and intentions themselves. They, after all, are what makes or breaks the use of a trope. And this is especially noticeable when the mangaka does like their work (unlike Gege).

Chapter 144 of Re is my absolute favorite chapter in Tokyo Ghoul, all the personalities together, all the different wishes and decisions of Kaneki clashing and coming together, making him choose to become a monster once more-consuming the bodies of children in order to keep protecting those he can. The montage of each Kaneki's turning point finally culminating in the incredible "I will keep moving forward, like a centipede.", not an enlightening moment, nor the culmination of his character-simply another decision that might end up in victory or tragedy, showcasing the cyclical nature of his character.

I wish it happened less though. I think the impact of these scenes lessen when it feels like he’s losing his shit every time he even slightly struggles in a fight. Aogiri Tree raid arc is arguably the best arc in the series because of the it’s the first time where he seems dead to rights and goes through a severe character shift, but then in re it’s happening every other arc and it just feels kinda cheap (except the second Arima fight)

If I had a nickle for every time I saw a white haired manga character go "Nah I'd Win" before losing a fight, I would have two nickles which isn't a lot but it is weird it has happened twice.

Yessir another Tokyo Ghoul video 🫡🙏✊ Thank you Hundred, I love Tokyo Ghoul so much that I already have 2 TG related tattoos ( one of them is a manga panel of Rize with a speech bubble that has one of her quotes "There's no such thing as fate", and the second is a manga panel of Kaneki with his mask on and it has a broken glass/ shards effect ) Actually I think I will reread it, your videos inspired me to experience the story again, from a more mature perspective this time ( I first read TG when I was like 23-24 years old, my life was falling apart, I was depressed af and this manga was the only thing that kept me sane back then... This story has a very special place in my heart, to say the least )

I always felt like this was the moment Sui ishida lost the plot. Kaneki has already learned his lesson, has already resolved himself after "killing" his father Arima Why did he need to learn the lesson again 1 arc later 😂 You can really see the strain Ishida had finishing this series when he starts to just repeat plot points already covered near the end and then that god awful ending of text over a black page telling us what almost every character ends up but forgetting hugely important characters like Eto who came back from the dead but never explained how or why 😂 I love this series but this final arc was dogshit, it was demon slayer mha and JJK before they were even a thought in their writers heads
