0:00 Galley and Salon
1:45 Starboard Side Guest Cabins
3:00 Study / Office (Mistake)
5:00 Owners Cabin
7:20 Systems Room, Spectra Watermaker, Inverters and Batteries
10:00 How much this cost, time and investment
14:00 Electric Drives are the Future
This is the kind of project I would take on if time and money were no object. This is not your average charter catamaran conversion. We deep-dive into the details of the Voyage 580, Top Secret.
Four electric motors, the biggest solar array I've ever seen, a massive lithium battery bank, and a million dollar investment, the boat is remarkable and so is the owner Rean Snyman, who along with friends and a couple laborers, completely rebuilt the boat in two years. It's an amazing boat.
I learned a lot talking to Rean about Top Secret. We get into the nitty-gritty in this walk through, talking details about carpentry, paint, gelcoat, wiring, A/C, electric drives from OceanVolt, sail handling, etc., etc. Prepare to geek out a bit on boats and systems!

100%, to have your “Captain” / owner/builder be so well versed in all aspects of his catamaran home would be so comforting especially when something went wrong at sea. I am nothing but impressed with him and his vision and knowledge of sailing and being 1 with his beautiful cat.

@@Errol.C-nz Actually, there is a difference: a kilowatt is a thousand Watts (a.k.a. Absolutely brilliant! Love the well thought out design and reasoning behind the decisions. Diesel-electric has been in use since at least the WWII era submarines and is also used in nearly all locomotives in the US; this is not at all crazy. As battery prices come down and storage capacity goes up, this will become the standard.

Interesting comment regarding boat manufactures who ignore electric motors will be left behind. Frik, from Sailing Sisu, considered electric. Frik said the Leopard CEO called him personally to say he wouldn't let the boat leave the dock with electric motors. The car companies had the same attitude of wanting to kill electric cars. Now, we all know that petrol cars days are numbered. Maybe there is a financial incentive for boat mfg to keep putting diesel motors in boats. It's pioneers l like this guy that moves the ball forward. Everyone trying to cram in as much solar as possible with varying mechanical and aesthetic results. Boats should now be designed with solar in mind.
@TheOKellys

I think there is just a lot of momentum with builders. They get their systems working relatively well and then new tech comes along and disrupts it. Builders are like the rest of us...they get good at something and they want to keep doing it that way. But it will change. Voyage appears to be pioneering this. It isn't going to work in all applications. Big diesels still have their place, but for sailors who like to sail on boats that can sail well, this is the future for sure. I have no doubts that manufacturers (maybe Leopard, maybe not) will meet the demand. It may be ten years out, maybe twenty. But I am old enough to remember when electric cars could only go about 60 miles. It wasn't that long ago. Once they could go 150, the game changed.

@@TheOKellys surfboard shapes for nar present IMO. I can drive my family from London to North Wales and still have half a tank full of liquid fuel, EVs can't do that without charging, then there is the cost that is next level for EVs. Like I said Horses for courses, surfboard shapes for condition of the surf, ect. Then, you got to factor in the amazing cost of going electric. Sailing is different set of variables, remember that industrially the marine diesel turbine engine is one of the great engines of all time, even modern submarines use them. So there is alot going on, and liquid fuel is great at what it can do IMO

The captain's comprehensive and eloquent responses to your thoughtful questions was a pleasure to view. I have long thought a sailboat only needs at most a genset for range extension given modern lithium batteries (LiFePO4) and the flexibility of electric motors (ie. The GM Volt). Sailboats will become more and more floating batteries and not just floating canvas :). Also, the captain's admission of regretting not choosing 12v system all around and thereby not splitting his battery bank and the subsequent inefficiency of sharing power was amazing and very sensible. One of the most informative videos I've watched in a while. Thanks. "Any sail boat builder not looking into electric drives is not doing their homework" -- to paraphrase the Captain.

Both episodes were terrific. Really, really useful information, and Nick, you are a great interviewer. Given your background, not surprising. Rean was a super informative on-air talent as well. I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming.

An incredible video. So much insight and wisdom through trial by fire. I want to own a catamaran within the next year and your videos are helping me figure out what I want, and don't want in my vessel. Thanks so much. Aloha and happy sailing.

Great video. I would go all electric. Just the feel of quiet operation even when under power, is just priceless. And running the diesel generator when necessary gives you all the range ,energy, everything. Great boat.

Very informative video, thanks for posting and thank you to Rean for sharing. We have a smaller monohull that I've been toying with the idea of converting (I have two electric cars and two electric bikes that we love), but haven't made the plunge as of yet. Waiting for the battery/cost relationship on the marine side to come down a bit more yet. Cheers.

Nick, I really love your channel. Been checking you guys out for a bit now. Super informative and I reaaaally appreciated this little 2 part series. I'm not a sailor, but for sure looking to charter my first sailboat for my birthday next year! For now, I'm interested in the vanlife and look to the boat KZbinrs for inspiriation. This series was chock full of great ideas that would translate well in a van buildout. Thank you and thank you Captain Ryen of the Top Secret for all the geeky details!!

Thanks J. We’ve done the vanlife thing too, a bit. It’s the same sort of mentality really. A lot more time on maintenance of course on the boats. The sailing, the navigation....you pick that stuff up pretty quick.
