Here's The Problem With 1999-2006 Chevrolet GMC Truck Intermediate Steering Shaft CLUNK!!
This 1999-2006 GMT800, Sierra, Silverado, Yukon, Tahoe and Suburban full-size truck intermediate steering shaft clunk problem has been thoroughly addressed by many online. Dorman, the aftermarket automotive part company, makes a replacement part to the factory unit that is supposedly updated to fix the issues that the original part had. Well, after just a couple of years with my replacement part, I'm having to replace the intermediate steering shaft bearing ( Dorman 905-512 ) again. I've also replaced the actual intermediate steering shaft around the same time I replaced the bearing just to be safe and to "never have to worry about this again". That didn't work out. Good thing it's relatively easy to replace!

One tip I will share that should reduce wear on all steering related components, from column to tie rod ends. Never turn the steering wheel unless the vehicle is rolling. It takes far more effort to turn a static wheel even if you don't feel the extra effort because your power steering is assisting you. Of course there is always the circumstance where you have to turn the wheel while stopped but I have trained myself to avoid that when possible.

All manufacturers use cheap plastic everywhere. We want affordable cars but still want all the features. We also want good paying jobs, like the auto industry. In the other hand we want everything to be built with durability in mind. You can't have both. I was an gm tech for 10 years, work on many brands. They are all the same and have their own list of problems. Now i work production in an auto plant. I see the tremendous cost of building a vehicle. When our plant goes down for any reason it costs us 32,000 $ a minute. If you ate buying used look up the typical problems and decide if you can live with that. If not find a list you can live with. Great video.

When my 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD was new it had this problem. The dealer did a test drive and told me there was a problem with the steering spline and that they would repair it under warranty. Skip forward almost 20 years later I am hearing that sound again. My truck has relatively low mileage but I am guessing the hits from pot holes have finally taken their toll. The bearings may be part of the problem but the plastic spacer between the steering wheel shaft is definitely the biggest problem. I am not an engineer but it seems they went with a plastic spacer to help absorb and reduce road vibration through the steering wheel column but there is a problem with plastic. As it ages it elongates and creates a gap between the spacer and the steering shaft. Thanks for making this video. Now I know exactly how to repair this problem.

Thank you for this video. My daily driver is a 2003 Silverado 5.3 with 175K miles. During the warranty period, it went to the dealer with this same knocking complaint from the steering, while driving at low speeds on uneven surfaces. The RO stated the intermediate steering shaft was replaced. Years later, the noise has returned, especially on hot days. I plan to replace the bearing assembly that you did before Summer arrives. Maybe the tech shot some grease into this bearing assembly at the same time he replaced the intermediate shaft.

Yeah exactly! How stupid is this?!
@GilmerJohn
@GilmerJohn 3 жыл бұрын
@@adriantomlin2902 -- Well, the shaft coming from the steering wheel isn't particularly well made: it looks like just rough bar stock. That's all that's needed: maybe cut some threads (or whatever) at one end and drill/punch a hole at the other end. But a bit of "conformity" is needed. That's why everything that touches metal is made of plastic. The outer tube, for example, is just cold rolled steel that's formed into a tube. If one part is a bit "out of round" the plastic helps things continue to function. On the lubrication issue: that's a toss up. More grease (and the use of grease that might harden) can cause it's own problems. At the minimum, it will attract some dust. I think the host did the right thing, however, when he added some high quality grease.

Depending the grease that manufactures use. It was probably cost affective for them to be cheap and use lack of grease because its a moving part that does not move fast enough to retain or create heat. However, there can be some safety issues behind this situation if too much grease was on the bearings and the truck is sitting on a hot sunny day. Grease will begin to sweat and leak which could get on electronics and wires under the dash.

We keep driving these trucks because they are still good trucks, not like their current contemporaries. Anything that keeps us updated as to watch for always helps. I had an issue with my 99 Silverado 4X4 over the past week. I went out to drive it one morning this past week, and the automatic 4X4 controls went dark and the truck was stuck in second gear in low transfer case. Basically limp home mode. I did a considerable amount of searching online as to what could have been the issue...even pulled out the 4X4 fuse in the panel beside the drivers door...it was fine. After a few more days, I discovered there is a second fuse in the fuse box under the hood, called ATC (Automatic Transfer Case). If you didn't know that was what that was, you wouldn't know, and evidently when this kind of thing happens, this is the fuse that blows. It was blown, and replacing it restored the truck to working order. I don't know what the 4X4 fuse is for, probably the electric motor on the transfer case itself. Who knows. Anyway, Glad to know what to look for if this happens to my truck and it doesn't seem too hard to correct it.

"... a bunch of springs in there." The clock spring isn't actually a spring; it's a spiral-wound flat cable that connects all the electrical stuff on your steering wheel - horn switch, air bag, audio controls, etc. - to the steering column. FWIW, pulling the upper column assembly isn't very hard in these trucks. Worth the extra little bit of work to avoid the yoga moves, sharp corners and tight confines to do this job.

Not knowing what kind of lube was on that bearing set you should have cleaned the original off. Mixing greases that are incompatible can cause a reaction that could cause the grease to liquefy and the part to fail. Same for greasing wheel bearings. You should always wash the old grease out to not only get the old grease but the dirt that will shorten the life of bearings. If you are having trouble repeatedly with a particular part there is something else that is likely causing the part to fail.

I wonder if thousands of miles of cab flex; while subtle, was firm enough to create dimples is the plastic race. I see a lot of comments knocking on GM for this poor design; however, all manufacturers have their Achilles heel as well as their strong points. My observation is, overall it's a design flaw with plastic parts. But the "updated" replacement has even cheaper bearings (after examining the original white one and the new green one), and so they fail even more frequently after replacement By the way, OEM part is 15775851

While it's possible to do the job in vehicle as you have done, pulling the column out of the truck is very easy, and once removed, replacing that collar is really easy, no busted knuckles.

1 1/4 or 1 1/2 pvc cut to around 4 inches and a 16 inch wood stake did it for Me. put the pipe up to the part and stake up far under the dash and pull the stake forward. Snapped right in with no banging. Make sure the stake is not jammed up against anything other then the firewall.

Great Video! Lol...Done that Twice too. The first one everything fixed and great. I mean everthing. Someone stole my truck at 4a.m. on driveway. Second truck... seller is upset with with klunk sound. (IM LAUGHING INSIDE) Price drop a bit on clunk sound.... FIXED....HA HA HA. So here is the other sound that comes from the truck whenever you get on a curb or going on a driveway there is this other clunk I chased that 1 for quite some time and I have discovered it and spent the money wisely and fix that clunk.... this Klunk is your BODY BUSHINGS take a look at the cab compared to the bed of the truck if those 2 lines on the outside are not lining up you got body bushings problem once I fix that I'm rock solid to the bottom bushing one was a hard 1 to find but I'm passing that went on to you so you can see that in the future and pass on that information also body bushings look at the line of the cab and the bed they have the lineup

That's is the 1st video of yours that I watched and enjoyed learning experience! I have a question or comment could you put a better made bearing inside that green piece of plastic? We used to buy barings buy inside and outside diameter Years ago when I worked. Just a thought so you don't have to keep replacing that thing every 2 years or maybe for since you greased it.

I noticed the plastic part is rattling against the metal tube!!!! I stopped the noise by using a plastic zip tie around the plastic part and around the brake pedal bracket. It keeps constant tension on the plastic part and stops the rattling.

I don't think his truck has stability control as the one in my 06 Yukon has a steering wheel position sensor built into this part. Something to research first before buying parts.

When it fails again stop putting grease on it. The tiny amount of grease that's there is all it needs. The grease your putting in it is not helping. The reason its plastic is ease of manufacturing and a better feel on the wheel. The thermoplastic is designed to run with the lube it has. The plastic has a natural lube on its own. That's why it's made the way it is. The grease you loaded it with will pick up fine dirt and work it's way into the plastic baring and ware it out. Hope this helps. Good luck

2001 Chevy suburban 3/4 ton 19 years not a problem it has to do with the road conditions that you drive on or what day your vehicle was made at the factory and why the grease wasn't put on the parts but after watching the video I will go to a bearing supply company and buy a sealed bearing that fits inside the shaft and over the steering shaft and for go the plastic part and never have a problem but I still have to wait to have that problem

I own two 1999 suburban these are the 4&5 suburbans I have owned one is a 2x4 and one is a 4x4. Watching this I’m wondering if a littel grease on the outside and inside of that plastic collar. Like others have said I’m curious why they don’t use a brace bushing here or even a set of greased splines. Great clip as was the stereo speaker one. I found your channel while I was researching replacing the speakers in my 2X4 rig as my now 16 year old son has inherited this one as a first car. It’s got a littel more than 300K on it as a daily driver and work truck that Iv done tones of replacement and upgrade work to over the last 15 years of ownership. Was curious where you are located?

Nice find and if I had money on it I would say adding the silicon grease will keep it in good shape for much longer then the designers had in mind originally. Should never have been designed the way it was in the first place. Would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall during the meeting or 's when they thought this one up. ;) ..

The design axial cross tension for that bearing was for a steering wheel under use, they did not take into consideration that the truck is elevated and that men use the steering wheel as an entry handle and that is what opens up the plastic bearing race over time. the other issue is the cutout on the original allows the circumference to collapse and the new one has a complete ring so that can not collapse leaving slop in the sleeve.

My buddy and I were just talking about this in my 00 RCSB. I replaced everything under the truck. Rack,arms, bearings, brakes, shocks you name it. The truck somehow has some slop in the steering and driving my extended cab it makes me so mad cause it’s like new. I was going to do the column next but this could be the answer. Any recommendations as to where to get the replacement part?

2006 GMC 1500 Sierra 4.3. My steering wheel has a lot of play and it takes a noticeable turn of the wheel to grab and turn again (Nore trun that necessary to feel a grab when driving). Is it the intermediate shaft that needs to be replaced? I hope someone can answer me this because my questions always seem to come to this part but based on what your symptoms are as to why you knew to replace it, I'm guess that isn't it. Thanks for helpful replies!

I have been working on vehicles for over 30 years and the newer vehicles have parts that break down that no one ever had to worry about in the past. Now some newer vehicles must be reprogrammed after changing a made to fail part.I will stick with my older vehicles.

I have not replaced mine and don't have this issue, the bearing are going to wear it down the same because plastic spreads with pressure. If you know a shop they can make this part out of metal for you. Then you would need lube.

My 97 steering shaft seems a lot easier to replace than this. GM wanted to start cheaping out on some stuff starting 98. No wonder so many common issues. My only problem is trying to get into the engine bay as it sits higher for my short height. That is terrible quality control, rip off, cheap, etc... when you need to keep replacing the same part.
