Hi John, amazing video as always! And the utmost respect to the FDNY members! Regarding the term "taxpayer," at least in the real estate industry here in NYC, it is understood to mean a one-story structure that was built in order to generate just about enough revenue to pay the real estate taxes due on the property. Thanks again!

Those smoke shop fires can be nasty, we had one here in Los Angeles where there was an illegal store of butane and it cooked off while the members were getting off the roof, the fire wrapped around the tower while members were on it. No members were killed, but some had major burns. My CERT inspectors were at that fire and suffered burns. The story they told was sobering. There are some videos on KZbin on The Boyd Street Fire

The loading up of units reminds me of the Santana Row complex fire here in San Jose Calif. in 2003, a mixed shops & residential units above the shops complex, under construction. It was 8 alarms, plus another 5 alarms for spot fires from embers. The BC on the first alarm asked for a second immediately upon seeing to smoke header, well before going on scene. In San Mateo County Calif., last week, there was an 8 alarm fire at a building under construction. They had some strike teams come from out of that County, which would be like units from another borough, in New York City. New York handles these larger fires well.

It likely had been smoldering for a white before the fire blew up and out. Those old connected wooden buildings, commercial and residential, can be fire traps. Kudos to the FDNY for their hard work and to you too, John, for the great video. However, I think you need to keep a supply of N-5 masks in the glove compartment of your car to wear and help protect your lungs from the high danger of directly inhaling deadly smoke from a bit fire such as this one.

Always wanted to know--what are the chirping whisling sounds during the fire??
@dennishohl10676 ай бұрын
The firefighters are wearing SCBA, self contained breathing apparatus. These are equipped with a motion sensor that sounds an audible alarm ( the sound you referred to) when the firefighter does not move for a short period of time ( about 30 seconds). That is in case one of them becomes trapped, injured or incapacitated, the others around him will hear the alarm and initiate rescue efforts. The longer the firefighter is motionless, the louder and more effective the alarm becomes.

Yes, taxpyer is an odd description. I was thinking it meant basically that the building was not built to code and thus it would be more difficult and dangerous to work with in a fire. But I've watched fires in Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Boston and Jersey and no one else uses this term. I'm wondering if the owners will sell to a developer who could put up a large apartment building with retail on the main floor to help out with the housing shortage. Also sounds like no one was injured so that is a good thing.

I’ve never understood why it takes them so long to get a ladder truck up and flowing water. You can set a truck up and have water flowing within 5 to 8 minutes. And then you got guys standing around with a line in their hand and flowing the water. They just seem way too relaxed, and unconcerned. They were over 30 minutes in before they really started flowing water.
@romeocordero82686 ай бұрын
same observation here. the 99 store was almost in ruins before water was seen flowing to the fire. almost 39mins of the video. no offense meant for fdny, but it was just slow to watch.

Until a roof collapses or you open the roof. Water flowing from a tower ladder is useless.
@Dads-acct6 ай бұрын
@@Yupyup535 not necessarily, New York uses them to knock down fires from the store front. Never seen anyone else do this but it makes sense. Can flow a lot of water on a large fire this way and penetrate the building at the same time with the pressure and flow.
