Every time I watch your videos, it brings me a little bit closer to understanding what my grandfather must have experienced when he started as a firefighter in the 1950's, worked his way up the ranks and retired as a Chief in the Vancouver FD here in Vancouver BC Canada. I never got to hear any of his stories, I never developed a close relationship with him and when I started watching your videos last year & it gave me a glimpse of what fire fighters go through, how brave, courageous & selfless they are to run into a fire when we all run out. So when he died earlier this year, these videos helped me see the type of man he was & why he never spoke about it.
@freeman23992 жыл бұрын
It's sad that your fathers stories and struggles died with him, and that you weren't close. I was not not close with my father either. My grandfather and grandmother both fought for Canada and Britain respectfully in WWII. They both died when I was young, so I never got to hear the stories of their battles, and what it was like in that dark that time in history.

I can relate my my grandfather was a fireman for pompton lakes New Jersey. He was also a Marine in the United States Marine corps. I did have a fairly close relationship with her grandfather but you never talked about any of his experiences. And me and my older brother were little kids my parents manage an apartment complex and Vacaville California and me and my older brother almost set the apartment building on fire. My mother called him. Told him what we did. He said they did what!? He was on duty at the fire station and the very next day he was in California! He walked in our apartment with his leather belt already in his hand soaked good in wet and whipped both our butts bare! I think him everyday for doing that because it taught us both a very big lesson. After that every time you came to California he would put my mom's police scanner on the fire station. Any fire calls he would take me out there and point out what they were doing and teach me about fire suppression containment and extinguishing different types of fires. His lessons are the reason why I was able to put out 95% of a brush fire that was about 150 ft 200 ft long possibly a little bit longer 40 ft and width and the flames were at least 60 70 feet in the air bare handed before even the fire departments spotter got there nonetheless the engines! My grandfather passed away December 5th of 2000 from a heart attack. But he's still with us! Rip John Alexander Osbun. John thank you for your videos you're very informative and very good positioning on for watching the fires. Keep up the great work!

Wow! Big, nasty fire on this call! It's so strange seeing that one apartment in the middle all nice and set up with the lights on while a raging fire surrounds it!! It's like a whole little story on it's own in the midst of a big novel. Great commentary on the fire fighting and how on top of it the FDNY was. You called it perfectly. They got this under control pretty quick considering how big it was and the limited bucket ladder access. The fire didn't look that big from street. It's was a totally different scene down there and it was good to show that contrast. Great job capturing all of it!!!!! 👍

Just wondering why it always takes the FDNY so long to put master streams in use? Fire blowing out of the roof and they have 2, maybe 3 hand lines operating inside. The one tower wasn’t even manned! Meanwhile the fire continues to spread unabated. I also don’t understand why they leave truckies on the roof 30 min into the video. Great video as always JJ.
@dubzytse7102 жыл бұрын
@@mikehoysler4322 i was def wondering y they had unmaned tower
@mikehoysler43222 жыл бұрын
@@dubzytse710 It’s not for a lack of manpower. They had hose stretched all over the street but only one tower & one ladder. Why not get some of those spectating FFs to move the hose and get a 2nd tower on the 1 - 2 corner? IMO the FDNY is their own worst enemy, yeah the streets are crowded with parked cars, yes there are lots of exposure issues, but once they opened up one tower master stream things got a lot better fast, but it was 50 min into the video so it took them at least 60 min to figure it out. Every fire it’s the same M.O.

At 3:52 and 7:24, a trench cut is cutting a large hole in the roof to release smoke, gases and flames, and also provides access for hose water on the fire. Great coverage, John!

😡 you stole my explanation. LOL
@ccc5302 жыл бұрын
With due respect, I will add a little more to your explanation: It is typically used to stop a fire from running further within the space between the ceiling and the roof, known as the cockloft. It’s a long cut that allows a large volume of fire and fuel (smoke is fuel) out of the building, this stopping the horizontal spread of the fire.

Excellent coverage on this one. This shows how fast a fire can spread once it gets a good foothold in the cockloft. It lets your viewers see how risky fire fighting can be as they see members on the roof over a well involved fire. Sometimes you see strange things happen in a building like there’s one top floor apartment where the lights are still on and the fire didn’t extend down to it . While all other top floor apartments had extension. I’m kind of surprised that lines were not used from the B side exposure during the height of the fire like they finally did. I’m sure the owner of that one car is not happy the tower ladder is short jacked on the car. That is risky in itself because the car doesn’t provide solid footing.
@kowalski37692 жыл бұрын
Yeah I noticed the same thing about that one apartment. So strange how it was all nice and peaceful in the middle of all that. Makes you wonder what was happening in there, who lived there, what's the backstory of that??? Not in a suspicious way, but more in a generally curious way.

Tremendous coverage ! I am amazed in how close the FDNY allows yourself and the others to get as close as you all do to their Fire Scenes to take these clips. In addition I am amazed in how you gain entry to nearby buildings /roofs to take these clips . Much thanks for posting and do Stay Safe ! Watch out for the Pit Bulls ! Best video yet. Great commentary and explaining the process. A bit of everything: a tree cut down outrigger on top of a car. Wow! NYC is interesting but too crowded for me. I square block of apartments has more people than my whole Village. (FYI:Changed my screen name from Jim H to Badger49)

Man I grew up in the fire service,my father was a firefighter for many years and myself in the fire service for a bit but mostly EMS side and it kills me every time I see firefighters in toxic smoke without SCBA'S on. People are going to say well FDNY real smoke eaters yeah well say that when their in their early 50's or late 50's struggling to breath and are on oxygen for the rest of their lives. Because I've seen it first hand and it sucks especially when it's a loved one basically dieing a slow death. With the knowledge that we know today what's in these toxic smokes there's no reason not to be using proper PPE especially SCBA'S.

Absolutely incredible footage of a very dangerous fire! Fantastic coverage, John! The early roof ops were truly scary--FDNY Members are incredible! Your ability to point out the fire dropping into the apartments was awesome! Great insight into the exposure 4 (?) issue (upper left corner of film)--very troubling. Interesting to see later on that they had hoses operating from the threatened building. Thanks for a great video!
@thomasfreeman77702 жыл бұрын
FYI since you have a question mark about the exposure comment. This is how exposures or the fire building it self is spoke of. Depending on the jurisdiction they use letters or numbers. The front of the building when looking down from the sky is A or number 1 side. It should be noted that incident command can make any part of the building the 1 side as long as they let everyone know. Following around the building in a clockwise direction the left side is B or 2, the rear is C or 3, and finally the right is D or 4.

Love your videos, like always! If you have a new iPhone 14, your probably triggering the switch between the regular camera and the ultra wide. In the “Settings” app, go to “Camera”, then scroll all the way down to “Macro Control” and turn it on. Then go up to “Preserve Settings” and turn on “Macro Control” there. You’ll then have a new control when you zoom in that’s a yellow circle with a flower in it - when you press it, it will lock the camera so it doesn’t keep switching. Hope this helps!

That facade looks to be around the 1880-1890 era. Roof most likely wooden and covered with layers and layers of roofing felt (bitumen) which burns quite ferociously. Nice job on the camerawork 👍

Informative commentary, great audio on the radio traffic. Them guys seem to know you and don't mind you inside the perimeter. Shots of the command center and watching the generals confer and perform their duties was a nice extra. Must take a head for organization and a good situation map to orchestrate a big city fire of that complexity. This kinda stuff is better than sitcoms and reruns any day of the week. Hand salute. What would the world be like if people would rather inform themselves than entertain themselves?

@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 WOW that was quick -must have been very obvious. I've seen it where it was too hard to determine so they just say it was electrical in some cases.
