What is truly dangerous about this is that there is no size restriction. Dragons can be crippled by this. So are giants. If you are creative enough you can burn through legendary resistances if you can lead them into a premade mine field

I did the math and the largest number of magical traps you can have out at 1 time with 1 caster is 47 because by the time your done casting the 48 8 hours would have past and you would strat losing tarps. Pointless thing to know but my come in handy if your defending a town form a siege or something.

That would be assuming you only have one caster. If you had two or three, you could really fortify a town!

Important fact your not limited in the numder of magic traps other the spell slots so if you have wand /scroll and a lot of rope you can trap the hell out of some place.

I had a druid use it to trap the entrance to its room while sleeping

I feel it should be a ritual since it takes a minute, but using a Familiar since its a touch spell means you should still be able to use Cantrips, right? Plus, if Forced Movement works you could always use something like Thorn Whip or Lighting Lure to drag an enemy into it while doing damage.

PHB pg 201 LONGER CASTING TIMES Certain spells (including spells cast as rituals) require more time to cast: minutes or even hours. When you cast a spell with a casting time longer than a single action or reaction, you must spend your action each turn casting the spell, and you must maintain your concentration while you do so (see "Concentration" below). Ifyour concentration is broken, the spell fails, but you don't expend a spell slot. Ifyou want to try casting the spell again, you must start over. Magic stone and shillelagh could be cast, but you would t be able to make use of them personally with your action without giving up on the snare casting in progress. Suppose you could hand out magic stone pebbles for others to use though.

You can use this as a cheap, not very useful levitate spell keeping you from touching the ground.

It consumes the rope? Why not just make an actual trap? Save a spell slot? Maybe save some rope too!

The biggest benefit to the Snare Spell is that you can use it anywhere, whereas an actual trap would need specific environments and materials !

Im making a druid that makes his own rope from plant fiber he gathers from whatever plants may be nearby. it's not that difficult to do irl and can be done as a hobby during short rests. also taking plant growth in case there aren't any relevant plants nearby like in a city. with plant growth I can just go to a park or garden choose a patch of soil with some basic plants and instantly have plenty of fiber

Another main benefit for it being a spell rather than a normal trap is that it’s contested by spell save DC against a Dex saving throw. Usually traps aren’t really good unless really expensive and methodical, so for a single 30ft rope it’s DC can be pretty good

You can use it catch Food or Booby Trap there exit route before fighting anyone else.

This would be useful on monsters with low dex and int like Ogres which have a -3 int mod and a -1 dex mod

anyone else feel like it should basically notify the caster when it goes off? I mean its a whole ass spell

Tbf its 1st level and it has no range limitations. It would be a little broken because of that, you would basically be able to know if someone broke into your house from miles away with just a 1st level spell (with a duration of 8 hours you could be a ways away and still be notified)

Im just thinking this is lowkey op. 'anything bigger then small' So it works on the biggest creatures in the game. They are very unlikely to have high dex. It now also lasts untill dispelled. You can spend a lot of prep time spamming these and absolutely destroy armies

How long does it last after the trap is triggered? Can it be dispelled or broken once triggered?

what a trash spell. requires material consumption and the target has like 4 ways of getting out of it.

thing is, you can setup before combat at a choke point, and if they get snared it takes away a few turns/actions from them. it's a niche but it could instantly end a combat before it even begins if used properly. action economy is very important and this plays into that. it's a way to control an enemy without wasting the concentration spot. Im taking the new telekinetic feat from tasha's cauldron and the thorn whip cantrip to pull or push enemies into the traps too.

@@weathermangohanssj4 the thing is the hunting traps DC is pretty bad compared to a spell save dc from a trap, plus it doesn’t impose disadvantage on the save unlike the spell unless being helped by an ally to escape
