The Battle of Hue (January 31st - March 2nd 1968), also called the Siege of Hue, was a major military engagement in the Tet Offensive launched by North Vietnam and the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. After initially losing control of most of Hue and its surroundings, the combined South Vietnamese and American forces gradually recaptured the city over one month of intense fighting.
M48 A-22 Serial #202016 assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Marine Tank Battalion was involved in the heavy fighting for control of the city starting from February 11th 1968. At 0:10 it can be seen taking a hit from an explosive projectile, with the impact mark being visible at 0:28. This is one of the thickest parts of the tank armor and was probably not struck by a HEAT warhead. Unit records suggest that this vehicle took a total of three direct "RPG" hits by the end of February but was still operational.

I was a US Army tanker in the early 80s on the M60A1 with the 4th infantry division. We did a few weeks of cold weather training at Fort Drum New York (40 below 0 weather) in M48A5s that we borrowed from a National Guard unit and I loved driving them! Much quicker than the M60A1! It felt like I was driving a sports car by comparison. But it was also much more cramped than the M60A1. The armor on the front was also much thicker than on the M60A1, which was more angled, but I still felt better protected in the M48. Looks like they got hit at a point where there's probably close to 5 inches of armor.

@@brute6896 thanks for the info! I recall that during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the first employment of the M60, it was soon found out that the armor protection for the turret was rather weak so it was increased to 330 mm on the gun mantle and to 276 mm on the turret face and the electronics and fire control systems were greatly improved but more importantly the turret's hydraulic fluid was immediately replaced with a non-flammable one among other improvements that became the M60A3 variant.....

Ask the crew of that Tiger tank at the battle of Kursk: their Tiger was hit by 67 shells (from tanks, anti tank guns and even anti tank rifles) and that Tiger managed to limp back home after the battle drawing a line of oil and fuel behind him. My guess would be that the crew could not hear for several weeks.

Problem was, it was only part of a series of marginal improvements to a base design (M46, M47, M48) but with a new name. It might have been remembered better had it just been M46A3 or something. It did not help that the equivalent Centurions proved murder on the Patton, even the old 20lb types, and the more modern ones with the L7 were far more dangerous, hence why the Americans adopted the British gun.

@@dominusvictoriae my mistake on the matter of the Patton series. However, on the subject of the L7, NATO commonality was what happened when European militaries adopted American materiel/ordnance. I can count the number of times that has happened since the end of WWII on one hand.

1990-94 in Germany my engineer platoon had CEV (combat engineer vehicles) and bridge laying equipment which used M60 and M48 chassis! In desert Storm my Battalion traded five tons of bottled water for an M60 power pack! All the other army tanks were M1A1s so we traded around for engine. I never knew all the details but went to a certain location and picked up their stuff while someone else delivered the water.

the M48A3 they used in Vietnam was already out of date/vulnerable to RPG's and they knew that. They used them because they had so many and didnt care about losing/leaving them there. Still, it was a great tank for its time and me personally I love how it looked. The threat of meeting an equal tank was so low they didnt need to send our latest tanks over there, and for what it had to encounter the M48 did quite well from the guys ive seen interviewed. @@Wolfhound223 The M48 had an entirely cast hull which was state of the art for the time. It meant the hull could handle HE and high explosive penetrators without bursting at the seams. Considering there were no welds to break... Not only that but the M48 had thick armor that was angled very intelligently. So any conventional antitank shell would stand no chance. No one had reactive armor in the 1970s to defend against chemical penetrators. Considering the limits of tech at the time I would say the M48 was one of the best tanks in the world in its day.

0:31 what was being thrown out? Thanks! You can see the white impact spot below the yellow paint. I think it was hit by a HEAT round instead of an AP round. The HEAT round will do very little damage to the thick tank armor as evidenced in this incident.

What people forget about the Vietnam war was the North Vietnamese army wasn't supplied by the Soviets that much. It was actually the North Koreans and Chinese that were giving them the majority of their weapons such as the RPG rocket launchers.
