Hi Sue, I've never seen this medley before either. It is fabulous. The brothers worked so well together. It was interesting to hear them sing Heartbreaker. Dionne Warwick hated it, but had a huge hit with it. I'm going to see her in concert in May, so I will be interested to see if she includes it in her set.

The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. All 4 brothers are just natural musical talents. All of them dropped out of high school in their early teens and none of them could read or write music. All their compositions were created completely organically. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1967. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin' (and was also actually the first album on which their logo was introduced). From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). Andy had a lower, huskier, sound to his voice and his range was not as big as Barry's. I personally always thought his voice was much better suited to songs of his first album, Flowing Rivers. Andy died of myocarditis - which is an inflammation of the heart - on March 10, 1988, 5 days after his 30th birthday. His heart had been weakened by his drug addiction over the years which, by the way, was also the main reason for his split from Victoria Principal. He also had a congenital heart problem that was later also discovered in Barry and Barry's second son Ashley. His family must have been so worried that he would never speak. They were clearly oozing with talent at such a young age. It didn't matter if they didn't read music, it just came to them anyway. @@playitagainsue The irony of the Gibb brothers history is that Barry could have died at 18 months, which was 21 months before the twins were born, yet he ended up being the only surviving brother. Would the twins and Andy ever have gone into music professionally had Barry not survived? Because it was his ambition as a young boy to be famous (like their idols Elvis and the Everly Brothers). Had he died at 18 months, would the brothers that were born after him still have developed the same ambition? Interesting "what if?" premise.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Sue! 🎉🎊 Thanks for the shout out. I knew you would enjoy the medley. Thank you for playing it. Robin's version of "I started a joke" in this concert is his best IMO. Maurice was certainly the extroverted twin and Robin was the introvert but close as peas in a pod. Mo's humour was, as Robin said, "Childlike (not childish), a rare wonderful quality in a man". Barry said "Robin was a hilarious kid and the funniest man I ever knew" but was more shy and his wit was pretty cerebral and a bit risque. The twins constantly cracked Barry up (who also had a good sense of humour) who tried to maintain decorum (often failing). I like the version of "Too much heaven" in their normal voices equally to the original. Odd that while they were blacklisted after disco and couldn't get airplay, the songs they wrote for others became #1 hits and rejuvenated the careers of people like Streisand, Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick. "Islands in the Stream" was and maybe still is the biggest selling C/W song in history. Mo's high harmony on "Islands in the stream" could compete with Dolly. He just didn't have her big hair. Robin said of Dolly "It was fun working with them".👀 His usual risque self,😁. In that song @11:30, I always notice Robin and Barry look at each other and smile at the lyric "We rely on each other". Mo said he wanted to cry when they gave away some of those songs. These guys were certainly as good or better live. Considering the great difference in Barry's and Robin's voices, together they sounded like one. You can't create that familial vocal chemistry in a lab. "World" is from 1968 and one of the rare songs where Robin played organ. He played piano early in their career. The gist is basically finding out that the world is a big place. Barry said "You can't live in your own little world because somewhere there is trouble, rain, and you must face up to it". This was also the time of big leaps in the space programme and the video showed space flight images. Thanks again. Glad you enjoyed!

My favourite song from this medley was "New York Mining Disaster", which is in my very top 2 or 3 Bee Gees songs .. For balance, I think it would have been good if Robin had a little more of the lead vocals during the medley .. Barry always sounds great of course, but it was pretty much 90% with him on lead .. But as is the case with nearly everything they did, I enjoyed this, Sue.

@@playitagainsue - After Robin died, Barry told Al Roker on Good Morning America, "I should have let Robin sing more". That didn't sound too egalitarian. Who was he to choose? He repeatedly said "Robin has one of the best voices I ever heard, better than mine" (*Daily Mirror 1969*).That was the main reason for squabbles between Barry and Robin. Sadly, looks played a big part so Barry was pushed to the fore by their management but that has always been true in show biz. I too love Robin's voice and although Barry's chest and falsetto voices are excellent and adapt to more musical styles, the falsetto was overused. (Robin sang falsetto in "Living together"). While it was lucrative, it almost destroyed their career because it went on too long, people attached the disco label to them when disco became trite and downright awful (stuff like "Disco Duck"☹) and people tired of and actually mocked it. As far as disco, the Bee Gees lyrics at that time far exceeded the quality of the rest of disco (Stuff like 10 minutes of "Love to love you baby" and "That's the way I like it, uh huh, uh huh"). Maurice never got enough credit either. He was the buffer between his brothers' strong personalities and the guy who found the music to put to Barry's and Robin's melodies and lyrics and was their de facto band leader on stage. Their three part harmonies, creativity and versatility are all unmatched.

You mentioned the song "World", Sue .. Whenever I hear this song with it's chorus lyric "Now, I have found that the world is round", I am reminded of the Bee Gees parody group The Hee Bee Gee Bees .. They did a song called "Meaningless Songs ( In Very High Voices )", containing the lyrics "The world is very very large, and butter is better than marge", and "The world is very very big, and bacon comes from a pig" .. Now you can't get much deeper than that can you ? 😅🤣

The most ironic thing about the 'Disco Kings' label that got attached to the Bee Gees was that they had already written the songs that ended up on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack when they were approached by their manager asking them to write some songs for a movie he was producing. As they were busy on other projects at the time, they gave him some songs that were intended for their next studio album. The songs themselves originally had NOTHING to do with the movie. Later, one of the song titles was expanded for the movie name. They actually considered themselves R&B and Soul artists and were not fond of the disco label (to put it mildly).
