This was great pick I cant stand what Country Music is represented by today all that CMA stuff is garbage And that’s what Waylon is singing about ! Waylon , Johnny , Willie and Kris as the Highwaymen were the elder statesmen of Outlaw Country There is a movie called Heart-worn Highways that features Townes Van Zandt , Steve Earle , Guy Clarks , David Allan Coe thats the stuff i like most Townes being the true star of that generation of outlaws And there is a new generation Shooter Jennings , Justin Townes Earl , Lukas Nelson all doing amazing music Not trying to be divisive but No Garth , No Keith , No Tims , No Beyonce Thats just not for me Country music is great Hank was the greatest 2 more thing before i go Brown Eyed Handsome Man was written and first recorded by Chuck Berry This song by Waylon sound like Heroin by Velvet Underground Not just the chord progression but the whole feel of verses and guitar Happy 4th getting ready for some fireworks 🎆 tonight

Waylon Jennings had one hit in 69 or 70 called "Brown Eyed Handsome Man." He later played a show in a small, farming Arkansas town near where I lived then. When I moved to Texas, they were crazy over Willie Nelson. I much prefer Waylon. "Ain't Living Long Like this," "Good Hearted Woman," "Lonesome, On'ry, and Mean" are just a few of Waylon's songs. His wife was beautiful singer named Jessi Coulter. She had one song called "I'm Not Lisa," that I remember.

As is the case with me normally, I remember the song but not the artist, when it is a one-hit wonder. The song got a lot of play time on US radio, but I remember it more from the early 80s. Interesting fact about the origin of the song. Not surprising though.

Big hit in the States and Australia, but not a hit with my wife (an Aussie). I remember in 1980, my wife was driving me around the city of Melbourne when this tune came on the radio. I fist pumped the air, yelling out ''yes!'' and my wife (a girlfriend at the time) flicked the radio off. I asked her why she stopped playing the song, and she just said bluntly ''I hate this song! I hated it when I thought it was a chick singing it, and I hate it even more now that i know it's a dude''. She then tuned the radio dial to a community radio station called 3RRR, which was playing The Birthday Party (one of the most frightening Australian bands I ever saw - they wouldn't make a good kids' party). ''Now that's much better'' she concluded with authority.

I'm probably one of the few Americans from Southern California that decided to give up the surf and sunshine for grey old Melbourne, where these guys are from. It was the late 70's, I was a tanned-blonde surfer that spent too much time in surfing communities in Australia, and took a chance on Melbourne. I fell in love with a little brunette that hated surfers and only hung out with punks. I vowed to return to Australia, which I did in 1980 and we're still married to this day. I no longer have my blonde-hair, my surfing bod nor my tan. The music of Hunters And Collectors and many art-school Melbourne groups epitomized the city at the time. The problem with the rest of the world is that it doesn't know how strange and esoteric Melbourne was in the early 80's. Unfortunately, the sunshine and the native animals and images of Sydney hide places like Melbourne - especially during this period. There was a lot of highly creative people in Melbourne in the early 80's who have gone on to have success, and this song/video is just an example of what was going on down there at the time.

..While I have a general interest in ancient European history, this particular musical expression of it does not do much for me .. The female lead has a good set of pipes, but the throat singing type thing is not a sound that appeals to me .. It is actually rather unpleasant to my ears .. Maybe some of this stuff could be suitable for background music in documentaries where an ancient mysterious, tribal sound is needed, but as something to listen to for musical entertainment, it's a No from me.
